New Interview!
Hello Jamirotalkers,
An interview I just found I wanted to share:
Inside Interview
The cat in the hat's back! As Jamiroquai release their brand new single, Feels Like It Should, NW chats to frontman Jay Kay about breaking from his wild child past.
-Your new single Feels Like It Should seems like a break from the sound of Jamiroquai past …
-I don’t think all my music sounds the same, but then I see where people are coming from if they say that (it does) in terms of the singles we’ve released. For that reason I guess it had to change. We didn’t want it to change just because we wanted it to be the trendiest sound around – I mean, we didn’t want to have Andyan pan-pipes playing over the sound of a monk tapping his foot … although I do like pan-pipes!
-You’re known for your amazing videos, and the video for this single is another show-stopper. Tell us about it.
-I play four different roles in it. It’s almost like Willy Wonka meets Superfly. It was directed by Joseph Khan, and he’s got me dressed up like some weird and wonderful characters as well as doing some odd things like sliding behind cars and stuff. I also did a bit of cross-dressing, which I rather enjoyed. My legs are alright, although wearing the heels was a nightmare! I think it’s highly amusing – I chuckle every time I see it.
-Okay, it’s time you cleared this up because we’re still slightly confused. Are you Jamiroquai or are you Jay Kay?
-It’s a weird thing … sometimes I don’t even know myself! Jamiroquai is my stage-name, but I also see it as a band as well because they’re all part of the process. It started out as me and a keyboard-player, but I guess that was a different thing. In a way it’s always been a band. You know what though? It’s basically just a cock-up!
-On your new album, Dynamite, you address a number of issues – in particular how you feel about George W. Bush …
-I mean, the fact is I think the man is a criminal, and it’s one of the issues on my mind. I always feel that I wanna say what I want to say about the things going on in this world, from my point of view. At the same time there’s also another side of me that just wants to dance and have fun. I get to do both on this album.
-We’ve all heard about your car-fetish, and we know you’re a bit of a ladies-man. Do you think there are many similarities between cars and women?
-Of course there are similarities. I was bought up in the ‘70s when there was a car and sex culture. Look at the bodies of a E-Type (car), and then look at all the motor shows where all these scantily-clad girls are laying about on cars - it’s just a kind of fun association that you can draw some similarities between. Nothing to take too seriously, and definitely nothing for community-groups to start picketing me about! I love women and cars, and in fact I have a great fun song on the album called Black Devil Car that relates the two of them together. I mean with lyrics like, “I’ve got a lot of juice I need to put to use”, you can’t go wrong, can you?
-Are you still a party animal?
-I’m still a party-animal I guess, but a different party-animal to the one I was before. To be honest, I haven’t really got time to party much these days. It’s different to before … because I’d been cooped up forever working away, when I did go out I’d be off my trolley! These days it doesn’t seem to happen too much. I wouldn’t say I’m boring, I’m just more “together”.
-Fans on your website are calling for you to be knighted Sir Jay Kay by the Queen. What are your thoughts on that?
-I think that’s never going to happen! There’s no way they’re ever going to knight me. I don’t think there’ll ever be a day when things get so screwed up that it becomes a likelihood. Although they are dishing out those things like they were sweets … But more to the point, they’d never even consider me, so forget about it guys! And anyway, I don’t think I’d have the right hat for the occasion.
-Speak of hats … You’re considered something of a style guru. How important is being fashionable to you?
-It is important to me because I have a lot of ideas I want to express. To be honest I’m really fussy; I think I know what looks good on me and what shapes work for me. It’s all about feeling good. I’ve never been particularly way-out-there – it’s more so being wild in my own controlled way. I have actually designed some of my own stuff, some of it I actually wear.
-Whenever we see you in Australia, it looks like you’re always having a good time. Are we imagining it, or do you really love coming Down Under?
-Sydney is a great town to hang out in. In fact I can’t remember ever having a bad day in Australia. I speak for the whole band too when I say that – we just have so much fun. Last time we all had some time-off on the tour to go the desert, or whatever anyone wanted to do – we all went walkabout! We all love Australia, and we’re hoping to get down their again soon to tour off the back of this new record.
