Fabian Beilinsky
I'm surprised one of the Argies hasn't mentioned this already...
The World Cup dream isn't the only thing that's died in Argentina in the last couple of days (ouch... slightly bad taste, I know - sorry!). Film director Fabian Beilinsky died of something I was unable to translate into English, at the age of 47, on Thursday. He was one of the main men of the New Argentine Cinema movement, which is basically the best thing happening in world cinema since the dawn of the twenty-first century (the stuff coming out of Korea and China is great, but I just love Argie cinema - and not, not only because I love Argentina generally!). His most well-known film, 'Nueve Reinas' ('Nine Queens') won the Palm d'Or at Cannes in 2003 (I think), and if you haven't heard of it already, you will be doing very, very soon, because shortly afterwards George Clooney's production company bought the rights to an English-language adaptation of it, which will probably be out sometime in 2007, and will no doubt feature Matt Damon or Brad Pitt, and be completely and utterly crap. Try and watch the original, it's really bloody good.
So, RIP Señor Beilinsky, may your films live on...

I'm sorry to correct you Sam, but actually it's Fabián Bielinsky.
Anyway, I think nobody mentioned it before because it's not like evryone's gonna post here all the news of his/her country.. imagine how that would be, a complete mess!
By the way, he had an infarct (infarto) in São Paulo, Brazil. Another great movie he shot was "El aura" (the dawn) |

Ah yeah, so it is. I thought 'ei' sounded a bit... sort of... Portugese.

Heart attack while sleeping.
Yes, I was really shocked by the news, he was in the highest point of his professional career, and his only 2 films were both EXCELLENT excellente movies for the Argentinian movie market.
Thanks for that post, I was going to write something.

See, Marina? Told you someone would want to write something.
And thanks Diego, I thought it was a stroke or something similar but wasn't sure...
