Interview with Jay - Daily Express newspaper (UK)
5 November 2005, Saturday Magazine

Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay, 35, has released six albums since 1992, the most recent of which, Dynamite, went platinum this year. His new single, (Don’t) Give Hate A Chance, is out on Monday. Jay owns a fleet of 14 fast cars and has been banned from driving twice for speeding. He is single, since splitting from Denise Van Outen in 2001, and lives in Horsenden, Buckinghamshire.
Are you enjoying touring again?
The band sounds really tight and I’m really impressed by it. But it’s tiring, and the older you get, the less you want to be living on a bus.
What have you been doing since your last album release, four years ago?
I toured for about 18 months, then had 6 months off. It got to the stage where I felt worn down, but I got back into it with this album.
What’s the most personal track on it?
Talulah. It’s about leaving someone at the airport when you’d rather be with them. It’s difficult to have a relationship with you’re gone for months at a time. Talking on the phone is not my strength.
Are you back with Denise?
No. I don’t know where these stories come from. She came with me to Dublin where I was doing a gig, but that’s got nothing to do with a relationship. That’s just catching up. We still have a laugh. We have both moved on, and one day I’ll probably be invited to her wedding.
Was there a rocky patch when you split?
It was hard walking into a petrol station and seeing 10 different front pages with my ex-girlfriend pouring her heart out. I just kept my mouth shut and did the gentlemanly thing. Emotions take over, so I can understand why she did it at the time. We’re cool now.
Are your days of scrapping with the paparazzi over now?
I’m not so wound up about them now because I’m not fuelled up on coke and vodka. They can get away with murder, though. When that guy whacked me with his camera, the police wouldn’t press charges, but they’re happy to press charges against me. To me, it looked like GBH.
Do you have any regrets?
Not really. Obviously, I had a drug problem, but I don’t really regret that. Now I’m armed to the teeth with experience, so if it happens to anyone I know or any kids I have, I’ll be equipped to deal with it.
How long have you been clear?
Since New Year’s Day, 2004. I didn’t go to rehab, but my friend Ollie stuck by me for the year. We started an exercise regime and stopped going to London. Now I can go out without being tempted by the stuff.
Now you’re a reformed character, do you want to settle down?
I suppose so. By the time I've finished touring next year, perhaps I’ll slow down and get into a relationship.
When was the last time you got drunk?
Last night, with the band. I was in the hotel bar in Zurich. It was our only day off in the last two weeks, so we needed to release some steam.
What’s the best showbiz party you’ve ever been to?
The best parties I’ve been to haven’t been showbiz ones at all, but on people’s boats in the South of France sitting around doing sod all. Since getting out of the drugs scene, I've not been keen on these showbiz parties. I’d rather be walking up in the hills with my dogs.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
It hasn’t really struck me; I can be wary on first meetings. But what can I say? I’m a single, red-blooded male, so if you’re going to flirt, get on with it.
What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done?
I’m not the soppy type. Getting engaged to Denise and giving her a diamond ring was romantic. It wasn’t so romantic to call it off.
What’s the most you’ve spent in one go?
About £440,000, on an Enzo Ferrari. There are only 399 in the world and it will reach 218mph. I haven’t done 218mph in it, but I still contest that if a road has four lanes, it’s empty and it’s night time, it’s a bit draconian to arrest you for speeding. Go find some terrorists.
What’s the biggest misconception about you?
That I’m a hot head. I’ve got a pliable side but I’ll go on the defensive if I think I’m going to be burnt. I look after my band, friends and my family.
If you could be anyone for 24 hours, who would it be and why?
I’d be the squadron leader of the Red Arrows. Fast jets have got to be the biggest buzz.
