(Article) '7 Questions For Jay Kay'
Hello Jamirotalkers,
I found this article:
7 QUESTIONS FOR JAY KAY
So what's the album like?
It's different. Working in the US, you feel involved in the whole sunshine, palm trees, freeway thing. It inspired Dynamite, seeing these flash young ladies in expensive dresses, driving expensive cars, sunglasses on, hair in the wind.
You did some writing in Scotland, didn't you?
In my little shed up in Scotland the phones don't work, it's in the middle of nowhere, no distractions. You've got a keyboard, guitar, drum machine. If you can hammer out songs with those three things and a voice, you're on your way.
You're known for great videos. Does the new one live up?
I dressed up as my co-star, wearing the same dress. I had to have my chest shaved. Then, in downtown LA, I'm sliding behind a car. I like speed and doing things other people don't get to do because they don't do stunts.
Was Black Devil Car really inspired by your Ferrari?
Yeah. Cars, sex, the two go hand in hand. I thought of this black leatherclad cat woman racing around in your car while you're sat at home waiting for her. "Had a nice day darling? Dinner's in the dog. Car all right?"
Why write about George Bush?
He's making money out of war. He's sending young men away and like [The World That He Wants] says, he knows they're not coming home. The whole adminstration is slippery. We've got to get rid of him, he's trouble for all of us.
Are you set for your world tour?
I'm looking forward to going to Russia, we've never played there, and doing South America again because it's great down there, the women are fabulous!
What's next for Jamiroquai?
[Making] the first album we'd come out at 6am then start again at 11am. We'd do days and days like that. Then I was 22. Now I'm 35 I haven't got the energy. But hey, you keep doing it.
Inevitably the greatest hits will come along, which I'm kind of opposed to. I don't want to feel like we're feeding people stuff twice.

Well, this will lighten up the day for our numerous South American friends here. |
