The Jamiroquai Information- All you need to know!
Hello Jamirotalkers,

I finished this! I've been collecting information about Jamiroquai's music, and here's the result of it. In each song you'll find who wrote it, who played on it, information about the singles, about the videos, additional information such as awards, different versions (not remixes), etc. In that order.
Enjoy!

JAMIROQUAI

In a 1999 interview, this is what Jay says about the name Jamiroquai - 'I'd come in one night and seen this spaghetti western playing on TV. I was stoned. There were the horses' - 'the Indians, and the horns. I could see that all these elements were so like my hat!' Instantly, he conflated the name of a Vietnam-era helicopter (the Bell 1H1V Iroquois), the Native-American reference ('I did my reading and found out it was part of the six tribes who hang around the New York region'), and the notion of jamming to get to that fairly magical made-up name, Jamiroquai. 'I could almost see it then', Kay recalls, 'Ladies and gentlemen, Jamiroquai!'.
The band has sold over 21 million albums in 13 years, and they released 6 official albums, and 1 Official DVD (Live In Verona).

Never released as a full single, Light Years still saw a fairly decent release and even had a video and remix video produced. The non-US versions of this single feature various live recordings. Scam, Journey To Arnhemland, and We Gettin' Down were all taken from the Paradiso concert in Amsterdam in 1994 (featuerd on the Funky Paradise bootleg). Released on June 14th 1999. Recorded at Chillington Studio, Buckinghamshire, London, UK. It debuted at #1 on the UK charts with 98.000 copies sold the first week. Chart Positions: 1, 3, 3.
(Note: this album had to be re-recorded after bassist Stuart Zender left the band. Avoiding all legal issues, Jay Kay decided to record the album again. The Original Synkronized recorded with Stuart Zender has never been released and it's one of the most wanted rarities from fans). For those reasons,'Synkronized' had an October 1998 initial release date and was originally called 'Symphonised'. Also, new bassist Nick Fyffe recorded 7 tracks for 'Synkronized', but only 4 are on the album. Jay Kay was hoping to sing a duet with Stevie Wonder on 'Synkronized', and Quincy Jones and Roy Ayers were going to work with them. Another interesting fact is that more than 20 songs were recorded for this album, only the best 10 of Jay and Sony were included.
The Synkronized Tour from 1999 was originally called 'Boogie Forever'.

-In the nominations for the 1999 MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) awards, Jamiroquai were nominated for Best Single (Canned Heat) and Best Album (Synkronized).
-The VH1 fashion awards (which Jamiroquai performed at in 1997) had the band nominated for the "Visionary Video" award.
-They were nominated in the Best Group and Best Dance categories of the 1999 MTV Europe Music Awards and for 'Best Dance Act' in the Brit Awards of 2000 (that was their 13th nomination at the Brits).
-In the UK chart of album sales of 1999 from January to November 'Synkronized' was at number 25.
-'Synkronized' came in at 63 in the top 100 most successful albums in Australia for 1999.
-OK magazine (UK) listed Jamiroquai at number 24 in their list of the top 100 earners of 1999.
-Jay Kay was listed at number 7 in the list of Britain's richest young pop millionaires and the 8th richest entertainer by 2000.
-In 2000, Jamiroquai won the Japanese "gold disc award" for Best Rock Album.
-Jamiroquai picked up a 'World Music Award' for the category of World Best Selling British Artist/Group. The awards pay tribute to the very best in contemporary music from around the globe.
-In 1999, Jamiroquai were introduced as the third highest selling British album act of the 90's.
-The album has sold more than 4 million copies.

» Synkronized
In November 1999 Jay was interviewed and asked what the next single release would be. He said that they were planning to record and release the title track from 'Synkronized' (which is not on the album) for a UK release around April 2000.
In 2000, when Jay was asked if he was already working in a new album, he said that the band was busy preparing a new single (Synkronized) and it was "going to be crazy".
It was known later that the 5th single of 'Synkronized', was going to be in fact the title track 'Synkronized', with an initial release date on April 2000 in UK/ Europe. The only information known is that Stuart Zender does not play in that song. Also, the official site said that after Derrick McKenzie returned from his honeymoon, they were going to record several 'new' tracks to be release on the first half of 2000. The single was never released.

A FUNK ODYSSEY (2001)
Released on September 3rd 2001. Recorded at Chillington Studio, Buckinghamshire, London, UK. It debuted at #1 on the UK charts and it stayed there for 2 weeks. Chart Positions: 1, 1, 2, 5, 14, 16, 22, 21, 25, 37, 47, 38, 33, 30, 29, 30, 31, 43, 42, 38, 31, 30, 34, 29, 11, 11, 9, 5, 5, 8, 11, 13, 12, 12, 22, 27, 36, 42, 54, 63, 51, 44, 53, 53, 47, 40, 48, 60, 66, 74, 75.
Surprisingly, after 28 weeks from its release, 'A Funk Odyssey' re-entered the Official UK Album Chart TOP 10 at number 9, and then entered the TOP 5 at number 5, were it stayed for two weeks.
Not only that, but the album came in at number 87 in the official 2003 Top 100 Albums chart for Australia, which is pretty impressive considering it was released in 2001 (over two years), and the last Australian gig was in November 2002.
'A Funk Odyssey' was originally going to be called '2001: A Funk Odyssey' as an homage to the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' (Stanley Kubrick, 1969), which Jay is fan of and the album gives a couple of winks to it. The record company said it was going to 'date' the album, so by 2002 the album was gonna be 'old'. Jay was angry with the decision, so he changed it to 'A Funk Odyssey'. Still, one of the tracks in the album is actually called 'Twenty Zero One' (2001).
Jay Kay wanted 13 tracks to be included on the album (between 10 and 12 had to be discard), but Sony only wanted 10.
A song called 'Funk Odyssey' was played in some concerts during it's 'A Funk Odyssey World Tour 2001-2002'.
'A Funk Odyssey' was officially released in the US minutes before the first plane struck the World Trade Centre. This obviously decrease sales in the US.
-In the Official UK Top 40 Album Chart of 2001, A Funk Odyssey was placed at number 28.
-In the Australian Album Charts, the album reached the #1 position and it stayed for 4 weeks. The album stayed in the TOP 10 Chart for 37 weeks.
-In French Album Charts, the album entered at number #1 during September.
-The album also entered at 1st place in the Top Electronic Albums Chart, and the next week moved to the 2nd.
-During September 'A Funk Odyssey' was at number one in the Amazon.co.uk sales ranking chart.
-In the Billboard 200 album chart for September 29th, 'A Funk Odyssey' had a new entry at number 44.
-Elton John and Jay Kay were planning to duet at 2002's Brit Awards show, singing Elton's classic hit from 1983 'I'm Still Standing'.
-In 2001, Jamiroquai were nominated in 'Best International Group' and 'Best International Album' for the Premios Amigo, in Spain.
-In 2001, percussionist Sola Akingbola was voted the world's number two studio and live percussionist in the Rhythm Magazine and later Derrick Mc Kenzie came second in the Best Funk Drummer category.

-In the first ever MTV Japan Video Music Awards, Jamiroquai was nominated in the Best Male Artist Category.
-In 2003, they were nominated for the 15th time at the Brit Awards for 'Best Dance Category'.
-The same year they won the 'Best Live Performance' award by the Portuguese Magazine 'Dance Club'.

-Best selling album since 'Travelling Without Moving','A Funk Odyssey' was awarded the following British Phonographic Industry (BPI) Certified Awards - Silver (200,000 sales) and Gold (400,000 sales) on 14 September 2001. A Platinum award for 600,000 sales was awarded on 16 November 2001 and Double Platinum (1.2 million) on 15 March 2002.

All versions of the album also include as a hidden track "So Good To Feel Real", a funky jam recorded just before the album had to be delivered to the record company. The track on the album, which fades out after a couple of minutes, was recorded in a single take and was never completed.
A Funk Odyssey is the first Jamiroquai album to be produced by Rick Pope, and the first album that features Jay Kay on the cover artwork.

'A Funk Odyssey' has sold over 5 million albums around the world.

Listening carefully, Jay Kay is actually singing something at the beginning of the song. No lyrics are known.
According to Jay Kay, this song was originally between 9 and 10 minutes long and the only live versions that this song has was used as intro of 'Virtual Insanity' during the 1999 'Synkronized World Tour'.

» Deeper Underground 4:46

Highest chart position: #1 (July 1998 - UK)
Recorded in-between their third and fourth albums, Deeper Underground was the band's first number-one single, debuting at the top spot in Britain and in the US. It reached the top spot it's first week or release with 89.000 copies sold.
In the offical year end singles chart for 1998, Deeper Underground was placed at number 29. It ended the year at number 55 in the official UK year end chart for 1998.
('Deeper Underground' was originally called 'Godzilla Is A Killer'. Hollywood executives asked for a change because 'Godzilla Is A Killer' represented a 'negative image' of the monster).
Video directed by Mike Lipscombe. 3 Different versions of this video exists. One of them, Godzilla enters from the cinema screen. On the other one, a man is walking on the sreet with a couple og friends, and he is looking at a fish bowl, when he enters on the cinema just like Godzilla in the other version.

» Do You Know Where You’re Coming From 5:03
(B-Side from 'Travelling Without Moving') Written by Kay. Produced & arranged by M-Beat. Music written by M Beat and Toby Smith. Keyboards by Toby Smith. Drums by Derrick McKenzie.
At the 1996 Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) awards held at Covent Garden's New Connaught Rooms in London on 18 November 1996, Do You Know Where You're Coming From was nominated for a prize in the Best Jungle Act category.
Jay recorded 'Do You Know Where You're Coming From' on demo as a favour for a mate, but was then shocked to hear it played on Kiss FM off the demo tape. In fact, when he heard it, he freaked."What's that?"It shit me up! It's a demo vocal! Now I was angry. Someone had put it out and forced me into a position where I didn't want to do it. Somebody had taken liberties!" But people liked it so he recorded a proper version and it was finally released.
Video direction is unknown.

-------------------------------------------------------------

> A remix album, going to be titled as 'Interpretations From Beyond', was supposely to be release after 'Travelling Without Moving', containing different remixes from their 3 previous albums (including a smooth remix of 'Scam', The Young Disciples remixed 'When You Gonna Learn', Jamie Myerson's 'Drifting Along', etc, among others by the band themselves). Later an official statement said 'The plans for a remix album have been put on hold'. One of the reasons why the remix album has been delayed is due to the lack of time that the band have had available to work on the album as they love to do some of the remixes themselves. After that, the official site said that 'no plans of the remix album for the moment'.

> They have been asked to write music for two movies: The Avengers and Scream II. They had been offered too to compose a song for the Euro 2000 Soccer Competition but the band turned it down because they were too busy. They were going to record a song for a James Bond film twice. The second time, Garbage signed to record it. However, the official site said that the demo song for the film was gonna be re-recorded as a B-side song of a future single off from 'Synkronized'. No single from 'Synkronized' had a B-side (except for 'Canned Heat', but it was the first).
A song for the movie 'Snatch' was also in the plans. Toby Smith said that the song had lots of live drums and a strong bassline, and that featured vocals from Beverley Knight.

LIVE B-SIDES
During all their career, Jamiroquai played some songs in their concerts that were never released in albums. Some of them are early versions (ie, different lyrics, etc) that were later included in albums. Here's a list of never released Jamiroquai songs played only live.

> 'Do That Dance'
Played during some concerts in 1993. Mixed with other live, 'Life Goes On', the result of this 2 song was 'Scam', included in the second album of the band 'The Return Of The Space Cowboy'.
> 'Let Me Believe'
Played during 1993, this song with different lyrics and not exactly same music, was later 'Manifest Destiny', included in 'The Return Of The Space Cowboy'.
> 'Give Me A Bad Name'
Played during 1993, it is also known as 'Brothers Like You'.
> 'The Kids Got Funky Soul'
Played during 1993, it is an early version (not the definitive one) of 'The Kids', later included in 'The Return Of The Space Cowboy'.
> 'Life Goes On'
Played during 1993.
> 'Stu's Tune'
Played during 1993.
> 'Hey Mr Boogie'
Played during 1994 and 1995.
> 'Who The Funk Do You Think You Are'
Played during 1994 as an intro of 'Emergency On Planet Earth'.
> 'Cannabliss'
Played during 2001 and 2002, Jay said it was probably gonna be included in the 6th album. It wasn't.
> 'Funk Odyssey'
Played during 2001 and 2002, the intro of this song was later used for live versions of 'Use The Force'.
> 'Shoot The Moon'
This song was played live only once, in the Montreux Jazz Festival July 16th 2003, and it's the only version known. Also gonna be included in the band's sixth album, percussionist Sola Akingbola said 'it didn't make it into the album', so probably a studio version of this song actually exists.

LIVE COVERS
During all their concerts, Jamiroquai is known for playing different covers in their tour. Here's a list of the cover songs played live by the band:

> 'God Made Me Funky' (The Headhunters)
> 'Rapper's Delight' (Sugarhill Jam)
> 'Wild Style'
> 'Tighten Up' (Archie Bell and the Drells)
> 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered... I'm Yours' (Stevie Wonder)
> 'Turn Off The Lights' (Larry Young)
> 'Don't Stop (The Feeling)' (Roy Ayers)
> 'Our Time Is Coming'
> 'Coffey' (Roy Ayers)
> 'The Harder They Come' (Jimmy Cliff)
> 'Whole Lotta Love' (Led Zeppelin)
> 'We're Getting Down' (Weldone Irvine)
> 'Sunny' (Bob Hebb)
> 'Hollywood Swinging' (Kool & The Gang)
> 'It's Your World'
> 'Upside Down' (featuring Diana Ross, Brit Awards 1997)
> 'Miss You' (Rolling Stones)
> 'Bad Girls' (Donna Summer)
> 'Love Is The Drug' (The Roxy)
> 'Crosstown Traffic' (Jimmy Hendrix)

JAMIROQUAI MUSICIANS
In all these 13 years, a lot of changes happened in the band, where today Jay Kay is the only one remaining from the original formation in 1992. With help from Edgar (Funk Education), here's a list of all the members in Jamiroquai:

During the 'Emergency On Planet Earth' era, we can find -during tours- the original Jamiroquai formation: Jay Kay in vocals, Toby Smith (co-funder of the band) in keyboards, Stuart Zender in Bass, Nick Van Gelder in drums, Wallis Buchanan (old Jay Kay friend) in Didgeridoo (aboriginal instrument, which real name is 'Yidaki'), Gavin Dodds in guitars, Darren Galea the DJ D-Zire, Maurizio Ravalilo in percussion, John Thirkell (trombone), Gary Bernacle (trumpet) and Michael Smith (flute).

In the 'Return Of The Space Cowboy' album, the first member of the band that leaves is Nick Van Gelder, the drummer(but his playing in 'The Kids' was left in the album), and Derrick McKenzie appeared for the auditions.. He was helped by a friend for the audition and he was selected six and a half hours after his second audition in January 1994. And finally, Gavin Dodds left the band as musician and Simon Katz tok his place (both recorded the album), the same happened for Maurizio Ravalilo and Sola Akingbola. Percussionist Sola joined the band in 1995.
That was the main formation during the tours (Maurizio Ravalilo and Gavin Dodds starting the tour, and it finished with Sola Akingbola and Simon Katz in their places). Adrian Ravel in flute, Mike Smith in sax, and Winston Rollins in trombone joined the band on that same tour.

The same formation continued for the 'Travelling Without Moving' era. And now Martin Shaw appeared in trumpets aswell.

'Synkronized' in 1999... the lost that many fans suffer. Bassist Stuart Zender leaves the band in the middle of the recording of 'Synkronized'. Nick Fyffe, a young bassman that played in a Jamiroquai covers band, saw the advertisement about Stu's departure and went to the auditions. He finally had the job, and the album had to be re recorded again. Although Nick plays in 4 songs of the album, most of the bass sections in the album is electronic, this could count as the 'new sound' that Jamiroquai featured in their records.
The formation for the tours remained the same, and a second keyboardist joined the band: Simon Carter. Jay Kay, Toby Smith, Simon Katz, DJ D-Zire, Derrick Mc Kenzie, Sola Akingbola, Mike Smith, Wallis Buchanan and Martin Shaw.

Some time in 2000, Guitarist Simon Katz left the band, and Rob Harris appeared and became a big influence in the band's sound for their fifth album, 'A Funk Odyssey', with more guitar writting.
Wallis Buchanan and his 'Didgeridoo' was put behind (an official statement said that Wallis wasn't playing on this album cause the sound direction was different, and there was no room for a Didgeridoo in the songs). DJ-D Zire, Martin Shaw, Mike Smith, and the entire brass section.
For the 'A Funk Odyssey World Tour', the main new introduction were 3 backing singers Valerie Etienne, Hazel Fernandez and Lorraine McIntosh.
In 2002, Toby Smith left the band 'because of his family' (note: after he left he kept working with other artists). Matt Johnson joined the band and he was introduced in public with the 'Live In Verona DVD'.
Right after the end of the tour in 2003, bassist Nick Fyffe left the band for unknown reasons. Richard Murphy replaced him in a few last presentations. Keyboardist Simon Carter also left the band.

Matt Johnson was also a major influence in the band, cause he co-wrote most of the songs of 'Dynamite' with Jay Kay. Rob Harris also co-wrote with them.
So, with Nick's departure, the band did a clever movement: they used different session musicians for the recording of the album: Alex Meadows, Derrick McIntyre and Randy Hope-Taylor. Nathan Haines also was part of the recording in flute and sax.
After the album was finished, they needed a bassist for the tour. The newest member of the band is Paul Turner.

The line-up for the 'Dynamite Tour' is: Jay Kay in vocals, Matt Johnson in keyboards, Rob Harris in guitars, Sola Akingbola in percussion, Derrick McKenzie in drums, Paul Turner in bass and Valerie Etienne, Hazel Fernandes and Bridgette Blades in backing vocals.

Cool JGRIZZ SAYS Cool

That's is just superb!!! Mi Amigo de Argentina!!!!

DO you want to help publish that on print? I think we all could contribute a little, what I mean is, The Grateful Dead had "DeadBase" Vol 1-10,
So I think we could start with this and then move onto live concerts and make a book!!!

what do think?
