BRIT AWARDS 2007
I know the Brit Awards are a pile of poo like many of our award shows, but this has now just become ridiculous. Maybe it's my strong dislike for Oasis that leaves a bad taste in my mouth about this. Not to offend any of their fans, but come on...do they really deserve this? I mean...really Rolling Eyes

The BRIT Awards 2007 with MasterCard honours Oasis with ‘The Outstanding Contribution to Music’ Award

The British Single award voted live on the night

Press Information – Thursday, 19 October

British recorded music industry trade association the BPI announced today that Oasis will be recognized with The Outstanding Contribution to Music at The BRIT Awards with MasterCard on Valentine’s Day 2007.

This prestigious award is in the gift of the Council of the BPI, which organises the BRIT awards, all of the proceeds of which go to the industry’s charity the BRIT Trust.

Oasis will receive the honour on stage at London’s Earls Court on Wednesday 14 February 2007 when millions of TV viewers will see them perform and accept the award live on ITV.

BPI Chairman Peter Jamieson said, “Oasis set the standard for many of the young rock bands who are currently enjoying success in the UK charts. As the BRIT Awards goes live for the first time in nearly two decades, it is appropriate that we should honour one of the most exciting and unpredictable live acts the UK has produced.”

Originally formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis are one of the most successful and prominent British rock and roll bands ever. They are one of the pivotal bands to bring guitar music back into the UK charts.

Taking inspiration from 60s bands like The Beatles and The Kinks, Oasis were also heavily influenced by their fellow Mancunian bands like The Stone Roses and The Smiths.

With such critically acclaimed and massively successful albums as their debut Definitely Maybe and its 19 million selling follow up (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? Oasis have inspired an entire generation of music fans and new bands like Kasabian and The Arctic Monkeys with their embodiment of rock ‘n’ roll hedonism and swagger. Oasis performed back-to-back concerts at Knebworth in having sold out both shows within minutes; 250,000 people over two nights. Their latest studio album “Don’t Believe the Truth has given rise to two UK number one singles, sold over two million copies worldwide to date and the band continue to break records with their sold out tour dates across the globe.

In 2005, The Guinness Book of World Records declared Oasis the Most Successful Act of the Last Decade in the UK. Oasis have sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

Their first confirmed release of 2006 is a best of album entitled, Stop the Clocks. This much anticipated album will be released on the 20 November 2006 through Big Brother.

No strangers to the BRITs stage, Oasis have picked up BRITs in 1995 for Best British Breakthrough Act, in 1996 for Best British Album (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, Best British Group and Best British Video, “Wonderwall”.

Oasis will receive the prestigious award and perform live at The BRITs 2007 with MasterCard. Previous recipients of the Outstanding Contribution Award include The Beatles, U2, Paul Weller, Tom Jones, Sting, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Eurythmics, The Who and many more.

British Single award goes live

For the first time in its history the BRIT Awards with MasterCard will feature a LIVE vote in 2007 as viewers are invited to choose the winner of The British Single category during the live TV broadcast.

Viewers will be able to vote during the two-hour long telecast for their favourite of the five shortlisted singles with the winner announced at the end of the show.

And in a unique collaboration with commercial radio, the final shortlist of five will be selected from a long list of 10 in a vote off by listeners of the hit40uk, A-List and Fresh 40 charts.

BPI Chairman Peter Jamieson said, “We have a longstanding and close relationship with commercial radio and we’re delighted to be working with them on this BRITs first.”

This year the British Single award was won by Coldplay's 'Speed of Sound'.

The nominations for the 27th BRIT Awards will be unveiled at the Hammersmith Palais in London on Tuesday, 16 January 2007. The launch will be televised live on ITV2 as part of “The BRITs are coming” programming. Both media and artists alike will discover who has been included in the most-talked-about nominations list of the year. Guests at the launch will be treated to three exclusive live performances from some of the hottest musical talent around. Details to be announced shortly.

Key to the prestige of The BRIT Awards 2007 with MasterCard is the fact that alongside categories chosen by the public, it also includes awards decided by The BRIT Awards Voting Academy.

Perhaps they mean "outstanding" as in "late" - their contribution to music hasn't been delivered yet Wink
