Need help finding a sound similiar to Jamirocuai
Hello, room. I'm new to the board. My path to Jamirocuai went a little like this: huge pearl jam fan + tried out stone gossard's side project "Brad", switched from rock to instrumental jazz funk and fusion, listed to Brad again a few years later and searched for similiar music, discovered Jamirocuai and became a big fan.
Anyway, I'm in the process of getting all of Jamirocuai's cds but am trying to find a particular artist (or band?) that sounds like Jamirocuai, which I heard on a DMX system. After hearing the couple of songs from the band/artist back in late 04' or sometime in 05' I figured I would find the music easily but I haven't had any luck at all. All I know about the band/artist is that the lead singer has a sound similiar to Jamirocuai's stuff but the music is a little more funk guitar dominant. The songs are hard to classify. They sounded like modern funk but cross between pop and alternative also. I seem to be getting nowhere with my search at amazon. Is there anyone around this forum who knows new music well enough to help me out? Thanks in advance. |

Well, I just checked out Electric Six, Toploader, and Remy Shand, and Maroon 5. None of them are the band I heard and am trying to find. The band doesn't have a disco sound but is instead more funk alternative. The band I heard sounded like a mix between Jimirocuai and Maroon 5. If DMX plays mostly new hits then this band hand new music out in late 04' but more likely sometime in early to mid 05'. As much as I like Jimirocuai, I liked this band just as much. I even tried getting track listings from DMX but had not luck with it. I'll probably never hear the songs again or find the band. Oh well, it was worth a try. |

welcome.
first of all, what country did you hear this from? i have no clue what a DMX system is. is that an independent station, satellite, public radio? what language was this music in? do you remember any of the lyrics to the song? fast/slow? did you hear any instruments beyond your basic set up..like did you hear flutes, trumpets, saxophone, etc.? was it a man or woman singing leads (sometimes jay's voice is mistaken for a woman, so that is why i ask this)?
funk alternative? hmm...
late 2004/2005 - my memory doesn't go back that far truthfully..i'm getting old, but i will try to help you but need some more information if you got it.
a place that i know always has new artists or artists that are worldly is Giant Step - www.giantstep.net - check out their jukebox and the music on there or their artist roster. listen to some of the music and see if you recognize any of it.
maybe some other people in here will be able to help if you narrow it down a bit.. |

Maroon 5??? wow... you need to clean your ears...
if you wanna listen something like Jamiroquai, i reccomend the Brand New Heavies (they sound like the early Jamiroquai)... _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Thanks for trying to help, Deesh. It was getting late and I see that I didn't give enough info. Here are the answers to the questions you asked: I heard this in the U.S. at a Maurices clothing store in Jacksonville IL, DMX (dmxmusic.com) is a satellite system for residential home use but Maurices (and other busineses) have DMX sound systems installed which operate in combination with DMX programmed cds suited for business preferences, the language of two songs I heard (on the same cd) was English, I don't remember any of the lyrics, the songs were not slow but were fairly fast, I don't think there were any horns or any instruments beyond the usual set up, the singer was a man, I'd have to classify the sound as funk/alternative/pop (a mixture of the three)
[quote="deesh"]welcome.
I'll check out that site you mentioned. Thanks again. |

okay, what i found out is that dmx plays independent music as well as mainstream, which is going to make your search a lot harder unfortunately. if there weren't any instruments you recognized beyond the basic set up, then most likely, this is a pop/rock band. most funk bands and jazz bands have instruments. have you checked lewis taylor? also, look at the bands on this acid jazz (although it doesn't sound like this is jazz) compilation that came out mid 1994...maybe it's one of these:
http://www.ministryofsound.com/Music/Albums/MinistryofSound-AcidJazzClassics.htm
dmx also should have a tracklisting of the music they play. when i worked in a record store, we had to play crappy music out of some program and it listed what they were and the date was listed on the tape.
i know this is frustrating. i remember hearing a line from a song while dancing at a club one night and i've searched and searched and never found that song. the dj had it on a mix, so he had no idea what it was. and there is this jay-z song that i love that isn't on any album...i've searched high and low for it and even asked hardcore fans and they tell me the wrong information! so i feel your pain...
good luck! |
