sola's vocal talent
i was listening to 'our time is coming' and 'dynamite' (live) a few minutes ago, and i've always wondered why sola doesn't sing more on tracks. i'm not talking about doing leads, but adding some more bass on songs that will compliment jay's high voice. not so present that it gives the music a different feel, but experimenting a bit with harmonizing, etc. he does it with the girls often..so why not sola? i think he could add flavor to some of the tunes without changing the vibe of the band...
i mean, i like his place as the percussionist, but just thinking about this for some reason.
it also has me wondering what other talents the band members have that aren't utilized within the band. like playing other instruments, production, songwriting, vocals, etc... |

Well Jay plays bass, or so he says. But then, the only song I've heard on which he provides the bass is 'Supersonic', so to be honest if that's the extent of his talent, I can probably claim to play bass as well.
Sola should provide vocals as well though. What is it with percussionists also being good backing vocalists? Weird...

jay play bass?
i think you misunderstood the thing about Jay doing the bassline for Feels Just Like it Should...
he doesn't play bass, and the bass in Supersonic is not Jay, as far as I know... but in FJLIS he used that vocoder... and there you have a codified bassline... thing that i hate...
i think that Sola sings so much... as the backing vocals... but well... _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Same with Zender. We only ever heard SZ on Stillness in Time live, towards the end of the tracks. Now he's doing LEROI you can hear how wonderful his voice actually is.
As Jay gets old his voice gets worse (imho) and having people like Sola (or SZ) singing would probably outshine him. _________________ Bass Transcriptions coming soon! |

oh, call me late, but i also see that derrick songwrites..this is from jamiroquai.com, it's an interview they put up for his bday yesterday
Question: Do you do any drumming/music outside of Jamiroquai, any pet projects?
Derrick: I do some writing outside of the band. I have recently been doing some tracks with a great vocalist in France called Audrey. She will have an album coming out later this year. Also, I've been writing with another girl in London called Sophie Delilah, which is great as the music is rock and dance tracks. |

Derrick must be careful.
I hear Jay got quite upset when Stu started working with others whilst still in Jamiro. _________________ Bass Transcriptions coming soon! |

It might be true it might not I just dont understand why everyone always sides with Zender??? I mean none of us know what Jay or Stu are like to work with. But everyone always seems to portray Stuart as the innocent victim
At the end of the day i love both of their work. |

When SZ was doing side work with D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill etc Jay got a bit paranoid about his musicians. Thats all im saying. Didn't say he was a victim.
I think in most peoples eye's Stu probably would come out as the victim. Judging by the amount of people SZ has worked with I'd say he is probably quite easy going. _________________ Bass Transcriptions coming soon! |

Funk Education: In the 1999 UK tour programme, Jay claims that he plays the bass on 'Supersonic'. He says something like '... Supersonic, on which I play bass...'
I'm in Manchester now, and my programme is back in Somerset, but if you still refuse to believe me, I shall find the exact quote and put it up here when I go home for Easter, which'll be on Saturday. Personally I think it's easy enough to trust him on, because there is practically no bass at all on 'Supersonic', it's not really needed when there's a didge there as well. So it's not like Jay's claiming to be a really amazing bass player or anything...

Hehe, that's alright. To be honest I did wonder when I read it if Jay was just lying himself, but I'm certain I read it. I shall double-check on Saturday anyway, otherwise I'll start questioning my own sanity!

I think that Sola sings too much sometimes.
During 1997 in cosmic girl and alright he used to sing too much, for me.
But in Virtual insanity he used to do very nice backing vocals |
