Breakdancing for the 21st Century: Break N Revolution!!!!
Hello,
Having grown up during the 80s, the early breakdancing and evolving mainstream hip hop of that era was really engrained into my life . And at that time, breakdance movies were a big influence into my my future musical tastes, the cut n paste dance music wizardry of Ollie & Jerry/Ice T/Firefox/ and others was so amazing. And 2 of my FAVORITE Breakdance movies(Among "Beat Street" & "Krush Groove") were 1984's "Breakin" and "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo", featuring the unique and AMAZING pioneer of the "pop and lock" style of breakdancing...
Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quinones and...
Michael "Boogaloo" Shrimp Chambers (Pictured on bottom of cover).
Both of those movies really showed the energy and creativity of these amazing breakdancers. Little did I realize, upon stumbling on the IMDB website (Internet Movie Database) did I find info out that their is a NEW "Breakin" Movie in the works for 2007, titled "Break N Revolution"! Adolfo, after these movies, during the 80s and 90s, moved to Japan and started up his own dance studios and even a clothing line. Michael Chambers also during the time moved around doing little bit parts in movies. But this new movie will reunit all of them, with Lucinda Dickey who was a AMAZING ballet dancer and dancing partner of the "TKO Crew" from the earlier movies! The movie is being written and directed Eli Harris, a up and coming African American Director and writer, and ALSO A VIRGINIAN like me! The film is in pre-production and supposily will be flimed in NYC and Virginia, here's more info about the new film synposis from the IMDB site:
Plot Summary for
Break'n Revolution (2007)
The film is set in a modern, suburban high school where the playing field is not always fair and equal. As a microcosm of life today, those not lucky enough to be well-off find that there is a constant struggle for respect, dignity and self-esteem from those that are. To make matters worse, the lucky ones are often so conceited and aloof that they'd rather keep membership in their "club" exclusive so that those of us not in their class find it that much more difficult to succeed. They use their power, confidence and means to try and keep the unlucky ones down. In our film though, we show the power of care and mentoring from those that were once in their shoes. In this case the TKO dance team of Ozone, Turbo and Special K bring hope, promise and drive to the life of "Vex" at a time when he would've been counted out by most others in society. Though our storyline feels very intense, the real "intensity" will come from the extraordinary dance moves that can only come from break dancing.
Summary written by Rob Guarente, Co-Producer

great post. my movie for not only bboys, but the entire hip-hop culture is 'beat street'. classic!!!
'breakdancing'...i use bboy-ing term instead.
every year in my hometown, we have an event called the 'bboy bbq' and it brings people from the culture together for a day of dancin', mcing, djing and graffiti. i love it, plus it's right down the street from my house. it's always a nice summer day in the park. the event embodies much of the culture. the event is legendary..unfortunately and fortunately, i'll be in london this year when it's going on..but my spirit will be there! it's actually extending this year to california and new york. you can see a video of the event here. it's amazing. you HAVE to watch it. i love hip-hop:

It was a long time ago... but I remember one song hitting it big here, making all kids wanna breakdance. "Hey You, The Rock Steady Crew"... I believe the group was named "The Rock Steady Crew". This must've been in 82-83. |

haha - i remember that too! my older brother loved that song.
yes, the rock steady crew are infamous in hip-hop. they are the pioneers and leaders of old and new school bboying..headed up by mr.crazy legs himself and they have a bgirl that was schooled through them named rokafella. she is amazing. they have been around FOREVER and they just keep turning out fresh blood of bboys/bgirls. i love them. i can watch them dance all damn day!
rock steady is like the holy grail for hip-hop dancers

Beat Street was one of my favourite films when growing up. The "Breakin'" films were great, but very colourful if you know what I mean. Beat Street was a bit more raw. Interestingly, in the UK, Breakin' was called "Breakdance".
I'm still a big rap/hip-hop fan to this day, although not too keen on much of the stuff that makes it into the charts (Eminem,50 Cent, etc.). Having said that however, I did really enjoy the movie 8-mile.
Enough waffling for me...
Oh, that BBQ video was very smart. |

^yeah, i found the beat street dvd for really cheap last month and it made me recall so much of my childhood.
i'm not so much a fan of the mainstream hip-hop either...i'm stuck in the 90's as far as hip-hop is concerned!
and the video - famed graf artist pose 2 did that..he's pretty dope and the one that birthed the concept of the bbq.
good times, good times... |

Giggles slightly at the high concentration of Easter Eggs in this post
Hello again,
Yeah, I know what you mean Deesh, I found the newly rereleased "Breakin" and "Breakin 2" for less than $10 from MGM DVD during the middle of last year ! I'm a little discontent that they didn't go the extra yard and interview the B-Boys, B-Girls, the most famou Breakdance crews, musicians and graphic artists of the era to be added to these DVD Releases, given they JUST released a Breakdancing Boxset of all these movies . More info here:
BREAKDANCE MOVIE BOXSET

In regards to the current new Breakin' movie in the works for 2007, I actually got in e-mail correspondance with the director/writer/actor Eli Harris, whom I mentioned before is writing and directing this new movie. I plan to bring you continued updates about this project, cause with Adolfo, Michael and Lucinda (questionable) as part of this new movie project, we dance fans will FINALLY have a proper dance movie that won't emulate the stupidity of past dance movies like "You Got Served" and "Honey"! Thanks for listening, thanks for all the GREAT replies to this topic, and Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000
P.S. One thing I neglected to note, the official title for the new Breakin' Movie Project is now noted as "The Untitled Breakdancing Evolution Project", will let you more when I know more ! _________________
