JMQ 9TH IN MTV'S "VIDEOS THAT BROKE THE RULES" POL
Hi everyone, I found this article today...
Like A Prayer tops video poll
Madonna's Like A Prayer video has been voted the most groundbreaking of all time.
The controversial 1989 promo prompted a huge public outcry and was condemned as blasphemous by the Vatican.
Like A Prayer topped an MTV poll to find the top 100 videos that broke the rules.
Madonna features three times in the top five.
Her Ray Of Light video is fourth in the list, with Vogue in fifth place.
Britney Spears is second with her 1999 debut Baby One More Time.
The video of Spears performing a raunchy dance routine dressed in school uniform made her a pop superstar.
Michael Jackson is third with Thriller.
The release of the zombie horror in 1983 was a global news event. Thriller still holds the record for the longest music video ever made.
Jacko`s duet with sister Janet on Scream, 12 years later - said to be the most expensive music promo in history - is sixth.
MTV commissioned the poll of more than 10,000 viewers to mark the channel`s 25th anniversary.
Robbie Williams` Rock DJ, seventh in the list, featured the pop star peeling off his own skin and was deemed so shocking that MTV could only broadcast it in its entirety after the 9pm watershed.
The leotard-wearing ladies working out in Eric Prydz video Call On Me were eighth.
Jamiroquai was ninth with Virtual Insanity, which appeared to show singer Jay Kay dancing in a room with moving walls.
The Spice Girls complete the top 10 with their debut hit Wannabe, unique in video history because it was filmed in one continuous take.
"25 years on from the birth of MTV, we can say that, contrary to all fears at the time, video definitely did not kill the radio star," said Mardi Caught, vice president of talent and music for MTV UK and Ireland.
"In fact, video has helped make music stars more vibrant, creative and impactful. Videos like Thriller and Like A Prayer aren`t just great promos - they`re pieces of pop history that broke new ground and are irrevocably wrapped up in how we perceive the artists themselves.
"And it`s great to see that the legacy of great video-making is very much alive and kicking with newer, more cheeky videos like Call On Me and Rock DJ being recognised too."
:: The full list will be unveiled in The Top 100 Videos That Broke The Rules which airs on MTV from 3.30pm on August 1.

Hmmm... can't say I agree with most of that list at all. I suppose it's always going to be difficult to decide which 'rules' are being broken. 'Like A Prayer' was controversial, obviously, but that was basically the whole point of it - if the poll had been titled 'the music videos with the greatest creative direction' or similar there would've been very little contest - we'd probably be talking about four or five Jami videos in the top ten!
But skin always wins the 'shock' vote 'in this world that we live in'...

Stylus Magazine #53
Sorry if there is a topic for this on it's own. It came out around July and that was Lovebox month, so I don't think I paid attention to anything else, and I'm cleaning out my mailbox. I didn't see this posted and I didn't want to start a new topic for it (because it's old), but Virtual Insanity made #53 in Stylus Magazines 100 Greatest Videos of All Time:

053. Jamiroquai – “Virtual Insanity”
(Dir. Jonathan Glazer, 1997)
I love these videos, the ones without a story or meaning. Sometimes you’ve just got to decide, “The video for this song is just going to make me look cool, OK? We’ll throw in some weird cockroaches and bleeding couches to create the illusion of meaning, but mostly the point is to jack my awesome-meter up through the roof.” Mission accomplished, Jay Kay. With a simple parlor trick (the only digital manipulations were the crow and the cockroaches), Jonathan Glazer improved Kay’s already funky-smooth dance moves tenfold while sparking countless adolescent arguments over exactly how it was done. This definitely tops my list of “Man, I’d Love to Try That Sometime!” music videos. Not to mention the bonus points for sporting Adidas Gazelles. Best non-dance dance shoes ever. Seriously. Try them on sometime.
