May 20th The Strokes@Glen Allen Fan Review (With Pictures!)
Hello,
It was quite a musical adventure for me this past weekend, and the other 2500 to 3000 Richmonders and out of towners whom showed up for probably the BEST concert the Innsbrook Pavilion (Picture of venue above) and Central Virginia has seen in a LONG TIME . I arrived at the venue about 2 hours early and took some prelim pictures, first one of me in line with the other "early birds" getting a "good standing place for a worm".
Then, once we got into the venue after baking under the hot Virginia sun, I took some pictures from my vantage point, the gate separating the "rich kiddie bastards gold round seating" and the interior.
As for the opening act for the opening act, we were exploited....errr..I mean treated to a local new band, apparently thinking heavily they are the "Next Killers", called "Altered Space". Here's a picture of them performing.
Then they mumbled their way through a mind-numbing 5 song set, the crew came out and set up for the stellar and "I haven't heard from in about 2 years" Psychedelic opening band for the Strokes, "Apples In Stereo"! They were a pleasant surprise and really did rock the tubesocks off all the oldie music fans, I myself, and the "Looking at the ground" kiddies with their monographed Strokes T-Shirts. Here's a picture of them.
Then after the "Apples" 8 song set, and a momentary setup by the rig crew for the Strokes, a black vanity van drove up behind the stage with the "starry-eyed" Strokes themselves, having them sequestered into a white trailer. Then about 40 minutes of impatient waiting, the Strokes took the stage and showed up the meaning of "Rock" for a over 15-17 song set, of debut album classics, new album songs and some AWESOME covers. Here's the rest of the pictures I took of the Strokes, followed by the setlist of their performances.
SETLIST (In no order):
You Only Live Twice
Red Light
Someday
Juicebox
Take A Walk On The Wild Side (cover)
Last Night
Ize Of The World
Take It Or Leave It
Hawaii (B-side, they played it after hearing me scream it out, Julian quoted in response, "Cool, let's play that one!", I was SO humbled!)
Vision Of Divison
Heart In A Cage
Electriccityscape
On The Other Side
Evening Sun
The End Has No End
New York City Cops
I nearly spent the whole gig just standing there, lightly bopping my head with a large "Cheshire Cat" smile on my face with the realization I was seeing rock history unfolding there before me . Having not seen Nirvana and other bands of important influence on rock n roll live, I felt that the Strokes were continuing the proud tradition of the "album quality" wing of the live performance. Their performances really touched me, much like Jamiroquai in 97' at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C., and this concert will continue to be one of my most favorite I had the luck of seeing live. I hope you enjoyed this fan review and get the chance of seeing the Strokes live, cause they are throughly amazing! Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000
P.S. There were ALOT of raised cellphones and small video recorders at the gig too, here is a choice upload from the show I found on YouTube today :
