Sam's Spanish odyssey
Well, now I've graduated, and the World Cup's over, I'm looking for a job at last, almost entering the big bad scary world of Real Life. But not just yet. In October / November I'm planning a bit of a trip round Spain, on trains and coaches and staying in hostels, for about five weeks.
Current plan is:
Fly into Barcelona, spend a couple of nights there then on to:
- Valencia
- Seville
- Madrid
- Bilbao
- Then back to Barcelona for a night or two more before flying back home.
But there's nothing for good suggestions like asking some locals. So, if any of you reading this are Spanish, or just happen to know part or all of Spain well - where do YOU think I should go while I'm passing through? What should I eat? What do I absolutely HAVE to try and see / do? And if you've got any idea what the hostels are like in your city (and one of the above cities IS your city), where should I stay? I'm open to advice!
Only one exception - please nobody say the Alhambra because I've already got that on my list. And the reason I'm only flying in and out of Barcelona is that I've been two or three times before since I have cousins there, so I already know it - so please don't say Barcelona either (though I don't blame you for wanting to, it's a magical city).
I await your suggestions...

Well feel free to share about Barcelona if you can think of anywhere the tourists don't normally see, please! Where do you live in Barcelona?

well you're asking for spainard to response so i don't enter in that description as basque that i am...but as you are planning to go to bilbao too i can tell you what to see....
surely you listened about the guggemhaim bilbao museum...and it's a coll place to see but if you are no in those kinds of visits i won't visit bilbao (except if you are coming in the fiestas time...when is it obligatory to come! hahaha)
i mean it is a nice city but i don't think it's as spectacular to come only for seeing it....i would spend the time visiting places around, lot of beautiful towns and lovelly places as all the ones in the coast of the biscay bay, from bizkaia to gipuzkoa, or incredible green interior towns....
i'm not so good giving descriptions or advices to visit places but if you're planning really to come around you should visit at the net and search for places you prefer (i mean, beaches, mountains, forests etc) and visit them, you will love!!!!!!
maybe a searcho in euskadi.net can help, theres a seccion for tourism and lot of information _________________

Thanks Jamirokaki. I meant Basque, Catalán, Galician and the rest, really. Y'know, I'm English, but if you asked for advice from 'British' people, I'd be able to give that too. I realise we don't feel our nationality quite as consciously as you do yours, though (even my cousins introduce themselves to English people as Spanish, depite being Catalán), so apologies if I caused any offence!

That's cool, yes - I want to check out a bit of the Basque really, San Sebastián and maybe Vizcaya as well, though since I'll only be there a week it won't give me much time to get around. I really want to see the Guggenheim, though. My best mate went to your country a couple of years ago and the photos he brought back were lovely. And that website is in my favourites as of right NOW!
And of course, being the football obsessive that I am, I'm not going to do a grand tour of Spain without a visit to San Mamés!

Anywhere the tourists don't normally see.. ..Well, I supose that tourists visit Pedrera, Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, Parc Guell...I don't know. I would recommend you to dinner in Maremagnum zone, in front of Mediterranian sea, because is so beautiful at night. Pedralbes is the most posh-expensive zone in Barcelona, but there's a magnificient avenue with this name and the seesighting of Barcelona is fabulous too in its top, near Tibidabo. If you want to have some fun or meet people at night I recommend you Santalo, a zone with bars, pubs and 25 to 35 years old people (saturday and friday). Montjuic is a great mountain INTO the city with theatres, museums and parks. It could be fine too. I can't think of something more.. Well if you are the kind of people who like to visit the poor zones of the big cities and to see its economical differences, your place is El Raval.

I live in Republica Argentina avenue, near Kennedy square (Sarria/Sant Gervasi zone). I'm near Collserola, Barcelona's mountain. Where are your cousins? |

Thanks for the advice, Catalonia / Catalunya . Jamirokaki - I'd heard something about it being torn down, so I need to see it before it goes!

Pretty central... my best mate and I walked up round Sarria last year. Got the metro up a few stops and then off to have a look at CE Europa's stadium before walking up to Park Guell...
My cousins live a few miles north of the city along the coast - near Mataró and El Masnou, if you know those places...

Yes, I know those places. A good friend of mine live in Mataro, and I've never been in El Masnou, I've only listened that it's not the most beautiful place in the world.
Sarria is closer to Sant Gervasi, I think it's a nice place to live in. Club Esportiu Europa's stadium!! yes! It's quite famous in Barcelona, even if they aren't a good team nowadays. Their young players use(d) to become good players too.
Anyway, all that I want to say is that I hope you have fun in your Spanish Odyssey, and I really wish you enjoy (again) Barcelona! |
