jamiroquai's future label
from funkin:
According to Friday's London evening newspaper London Lite (published by the same company as the London Evening Standard), Jamiroquai will not be signing up to another record company...

"Jay Kay is leaving his record company to set up by himself, the Eye can reveal. The Jamiroquai frontman, who is releasing his Greatest Hits album next month, has confirmed that he will be leaving SonyBMG to be in charge of his own musical career. Rather than go to another record label, the Space Cowboy singer will release future tunes directly online."

I guess we will have to wait and see what really happens in the coming months/years...

Being the collectoholic I am I'm scared right now. Hopefully there will be possibilities to order CD/DVD (and possibly even vinyl) media directly from the band's site and not just digital downloads. I need releases I can touch... On the other hand... as long as the music is good I guess digital downloads burned to CD/DVD with downloadable artwork is ok. But I prefer to be able to continue my habit of collecting promos and various official releases. I still have plenty of space left in my "studio". Smile

The good thing is of course the freedom they will get. I wrote the following at funkin.com:

Quote:

The good thing is that no one will have the power to say what Jay and the guys should do. He's in control. He can do whatever he and the band wants. More money to the people who actually do the music. Freedom to hire whatever PR agency he wants for promotion. Freedom to do whatever music they want, with whatever instruments they want... and songs with whatever duration they want. The only ones with some power to affect their choices are us... the fans. Because we will buy what we like. Hopefully Jamiroquai will keep churning out music we like.

I think this sounds great. Every musician deserves total freedom.

I also think could lead to more live material being released. Both audio and video... just think of the past performances already recorded... and unreleased material in Jay's possession. I feel like it's Christmas already. Wink

Great news although I must admit that I'm a little worried that I won't be able to collect things like I used to... hopefully there will be real records you can actually tough and adore available too... although in limited numbers.

Yeah, I think he's recorded all the soundboards for the past five or six years' worth of shows...I for one would LOVE to see them release the B-Live soundboard.

im surprised and happy at the same time
if the band is after the GH in the direction they really want and there's no more control by sony or any company, that's mean they are gonna do all really they want...i wish the best for the band, and we hope the future albums have a bit of the old tunes mixed with the new vibes Very Happy

sorry I'm not a collectionist...I just own 2 vynil ( a part from cds and dvd and stuff) and one is a gift from Janluka...so...I'm happy about this news!!!!
they're gonna stand on theyre legs!!
is great!! no more Sony disgusting choices!!

But there's one think i don't understand...why do u all say that if they're not gonna be with a big label cds will not be available in shops??

I dunno how it works in other countries but here in music shops we find also indipendent labels...or seflmade cds!!

And than maybe they will also produce it themselves ( I know I should write himself..but)!!

to me getting Sony out of the story is a great think even if I never had nothing to do with them!!

Wa... Wait?... Is this just "For five fucking dollars" or is Jay setting up his own record label? (I hope for the latter...) Since... If I had to use DD to get the songs, it'd be a really bad thing, since I have neither a PayPal account nor a credit card. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Also, I might be beating a dead horse without knowing, but is AcidJazz records still alive? Just asking, y'know, since I heard nothing of those guys, so I might persume they're dead, business-wise. ...Or is Mr. (what was his name - "Charlie"??) Pillar drowning in money? I really need to know.

I don't know... All these CDs from before, released with $ony... They don't feel the same now, they don't have that holiness now that the band's free... I could rip up the booklet for Synk and break the disc of TWM and... You know... Stay cool. Only now I get that Jamiroquai's music isn't on shiny round plates, but deep inside the soul. I don't know... I myself feel that a collection needs not to be a pile of plastic. It can be a single song, as long as you can feel it.

Now the music lives even deeper in me... Exclamation My love for the band('s work), too. I feel so awesome. I'm sure the band does, too.

seeing this from an economic point of view (i'm an economist so i always think on $) its profitable to the artist. Maybe they will sell direct from the website, i think that Pearl jam do this (they sell their own live records too) and they get their own money that is usefull to finance their own tours too.....

Anyway i prefer the CD's or vynils with all the packaging etc.....

But "the artist profit" is first.....

What a lot of people don’t understand/know is that a record label is really important because of its distribution network. Just think, how could an independent artist distribute his own cd to virtually all the world?
We're talking millions of cd's here, not to mention the (ten) thousands of record stores. Where do you start without a label?

That's also why record companies have so much to say about what kind of music is 'right' and 'wrong', they simply have power. For a beginning artist it's probably a big dilemma; do you want to sign a contract with a big record company and have the chance to get your music to a worldwide audience, but having to make compromises musically-wise from time to time? Or do you stay independent/with a small label, reducing the chance of global success significantly? I would have chosen the same thing as Jay did back then.

The internet is a great tool to distribute your album globally without having to have a network or a huge amount of money, but you don’t reach every potential fan with it, and as said before, a lot of fans will miss being able to hold the cd, it's jewelcase and browsing through a booklet.

What Jamiroquai needs is a (big) record company that respects the music as it is meant it to be. Too bad SonyBMG didn't.

Is good because of the less presure they'll have.
But you need a record label for prototion, distribution, tv adds, etc, etc.

Anyway let's wait and see...

Agree with Funky Junkie. Big record companies can spend many billion dollars in promotions and there are a lot of great artist who don't sell many copies just because they miss promotion.

Just look at Incognito. Only true fans who poll their website know if a new album 'll be released or the tour dates. Incongito's record label is Rice Records which is an independent one. It's a lot of time I don't hear their tracks on the radios and mind that they have deals with Universal for the distribution and their music is still amazing!
