TWM and enviromentalism
Sorry if this has been posted before.
I read somewhere that people accused Jay K of selling out the enviromental message of the first two albums with TWM. Does anybody know if he ever said anything about the matter.
I'm not trying to imply a criticism of the band or Jay K. At worst I think you could call it hypocritical as the theme of TWM always seemed to be a bit toungue in cheek to me. It actually really irritates me when people go on about bands "selling out". As far as I'm concerned, that's just an image over content mentality. They're musicians - call me weird but I like to judge them based on the quality of their music. |

Sorry... in what way is the lyrical content of 'Virtual Insanity' 'tongue in cheek', exactly? As far as I'm concerned, Jay is someone who realises the environmental state of the planet isn't exactly great at the moment (well no shit, Sherlock!), but who still wants to drive fast cars. On the one hand, that's sort of self-contradictory, but on the other, how many of us have self-sustaining organic farms in our back gardens?
I've never heard precisely what Jay has to say in direct answer to your question, but from interviews he has given in the past, and from plain common sense, I'd imagine he'd say something like that...

He said this:
"Yes, I have a lot of cars, but I only drive one at a time, so it's the same as if I had only one. I can't drive them all at the same time! If so, I have 10 other cars that people can't use against the environment"
Or something like that...

I think it's quite ridiculous. What he said about the matter is frivolous, I can't take it seriously. I´ve always thought that Jay is one of the greatest funk singers I've ever heard but, however, I'm not blind, in my opinion Jay's attitude about environmental problems are as contradrictory as his opinions about politics or love.
I know I won't be popular in this forum posting this opinions, but I've always thought that Jay, as a singer, is one of the greatest persons in the world. However, I've always thought too that Jay's opinions don't deserve the same respect than Jay's music because of the absence of a logical speech. |

I'm almost sure I've heard him say pretty much exactly those words ...and I think it was in one of the interviews made by triple j. I don't remember which, and it seems like I'm not able to listen to them anymore (don't know if it's the same for everyone). Here's the link anyway: http://bb.jamiroquai.com/viewtopic.php?t=4049 _________________ Sarah |

Great answer Catalonia - cool...it's how you feel and I'm sure many people share that viewpoint even if they don't speak up about it.
This has been discussed a few times, and my viewpoint is still the same. We all have an amount of hypocrisy or overlapping of morality in our lives - I think it's human nature. It would be wrong of me to judge someone else for this.

Since I'm really too slow to grasp some things people just said here, I'll just type my opinion up and leave:
Jay certainly does care about nature, though he does drive a car or two, but hey - I'm sure that if he had a chance to design and build a car that's completely enviroment-friendly, he'd do it. Too bad nobody wants to build such things.
You don't need to make a mountain of a molehill - we all contradict ourselves at some things. People usually make a big deal out of it because he's a star. Contradicting oneself and selling out are 2 different things, which seem to be mixed up on the topic on TWM. Jay has a lot of cars, but he can only drive one at a time, so why are we criticizing him for that? Hell - if he didn't have that bunch of cars, then somebody else would drive them and pollute. This way - only 1 car at a time can pollute, but I went off-topic.
Ultimately, I think Jay does care about nature, but he's certainly not a hippie, too. He just cares about it [nature] more than we do, that's all. |

he difenitelly don't care about nature more than me (maybe more than you but not than me)
i'm sure he really cares, and i know people is contradictory in lot of stuff (jay too), in my opinion he definitelly dont' ruin the nature but those excuses about driving only one car are just absurd, a ferrari or a lamborghini consumes way more combustible than a "normal" car......
in my opinion i don't think we need to defend if he cares or not of if he is contradictory, i think he's mesagge in lot of songs is right and he's not a total hipocrite in this issue so just the spreading of this ideas are ok.... _________________
