Ever been thinking about something?...
"Something" - I'm talking about charity.
I've heard some rumors on the Internet [I think from Snopes.com's forums/site] that a part of the money we donate to the poor and hungry all over the world is actually being used by some states to buy arms and ammuniton? Is this true? |

well, i don't have evidence to which you speak, but there is corruption and deceit embedded in many charities, that's why when you donate - you must do the research on what and who you are donating to - including getting their financial statements and checking out their overhead. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

well i dont know if it's true or not (based in the reality we are living it could be easily true ), but i think there are other ways to help people (more secure), such as going to hospitals, schools, etc, and help the kids for example with food, clothes, toys, etc. that way you know that you are actually helping people who needs it |

It does depend on what exactly the charity deals with and how rigid their charitable principles are. This is something I learned during my two weeks fundraising for Friends Of The Earth (best charity in the world, by the way, if you're trying to work out who to donate to - it's all very well trying to save kittens from being drowned or starving children or whatever, but FOE deals with the WHOLE PLANET, which after all is the most important thing going). FOE don't accept any money at all from governments around the world, or from other political parties. Nor do they accept backing from big business (they do take money from the Co-Operative organisation, for those of you in countries who have one of their 'branches', because the Co-Op aren't run along normal business principles). This is so they can't be swayed by the wishes of political parties or businesses in their research. There are no hidden agendas with FOE in the same way there are with, say, Greenpeace (which is far more politically motivated).
Some charities are run by unscrupulous people. Some are set up in a way which makes it easy for dictators to take advantage of shipmets into their countries (as we found out was happening in Iraq after Saddam was overthrown). Some may simply be totally inept at what they do.
My advice would be stick to the ones which have express principles of being totally a-political (like FOE), and do your research before you start donating regularly. Most of the time it'll be fine, but like you say, it's not a good idea to take the risk!
