Hmmm... not a very helpful error message.

Make yourself another administrative account on the PC. Log in using that account and install iTunes. Make sure you've uninstalled it properly first and reboot before installing again. If it works with that account you can try with your account. If that works you can delete the account you just made.

It's possible some 3rd party stuff interfere with iTunes... eg "odd" audio codecs or something. It's happened to me on the Mac once... and I have a vague memory of similar problems on my work PC when I installed some crap bundle of audio and video codecs. On the Mac iTunes started, but as soon as I pressed play it froze and I had to force quit it. On the PC I think it wouldn't launch at all... it just performed an illegal operation and a page fault or something.

The trick is to identify exactly which codec is the culprit... it's not easy to identify compatibility problems. If you head over to www.sysinternals.com you can download filemon.exe for free. It will log all file access and you can set a filter so it'll only log what iTunes.exe wants to access. I think there's an application called "Handle" too... it will tell you exactly which dll-files that are being called when you launch an application. This could be useful when trying to isolate the problem and identify what you need to remove in order to make something else run smoothly.

Well... acutally... it's not a bad idea. If one is installing lots of freeware and stuff and then uninstall them there will be so much crap left in the registry after a while. A Windows server can go on for ages without needing to reinstall it... but a client with frequent changes in the software setup could do well with a clean reinstall once/year.

To save time Symantec Ghost is a nice application. Just clone a basic installation (with the most essential stuff you need) and burn it to disc or put it on another partition/disk. Recover your system, update what's needed to update and you're set to go. Saves you from several hours of installing OS, updates, applications and configuration/tweaking.

Well... sometimes the wise thing is to take the time to resinstall rather than spending even more time trying to isolate a problem and fix it. In this case I don't think there is a need for Sandra to do it... but I'm not ready to rule it out either. Wink

One tiny problem can turn into two, into three, into four... into who knows? And with several hours spent on trying to isolate the problem and trying to fix it you could just as well saved yourself time and reinstalled the whole system. Sometimes the quicker thing to do is just that you know. And starting over with a fresh system can only be positive as far as performance and reliability goes. Just make sure you've got a backup of your important data first. Smile
