Jay - Dutch Interview
Got this in the box today and sent it to FREAKY who translated it the best she could from Dutch! Thank you Nat (since English is not your mother language  )and to the other Dutch speaking members, feel free to correct anything. Dutch version first, then Nat's English version.

Geinige tijd met Jay Kay

Fles bier in de linker-, sigaret in de rechterhand. Met een norse blik ploft Jay Kay, frontman van Jamiroquai...
...op een fauteuil in zijn privépub. ,,Kom maar op met je vragen. Hoe sneller ik er vanaf ben hoe beter,’’ verraadt zijn lichaamstaal. Om te beginnen maar eens informeren naar de totstandkoming van zijn nieuwste cd, verzamelaar. Imposante carrière, prachtig Engels landgoed en adembenemende autocollectie: genoeg om een mens tevreden te stemmen, zou je denken. Zo niet Jamiroquai-zanger Jay Kay. ‘Ze kunnen de tering krijgen.’
High Times. ,,Nieuwe plaat?’’ Jay Kay (36) trekt een wenkbrauw op. ,,Er staan alleen maar oude songs op.’’
Nog afgezien van twee nieuwe nummers, zou je over het carrière-overzicht toch enige vreugde verwachten. Jay Kay: ,,Dat ik van mijn platencontract met Sony/BMG af ben, dáár ben ik blij om. Kan ik eindelijk weer échte muziek gaan maken, zoals in het begin van mijn carrière. Experimenteren zonder dat die platenjongens in mijn nek hijgen om hits. Die misselijke muziekindustrie heeft me altijd willen veranderen in een prutserig popsterretje. Mijn band dumpen, geen rare hoeden meer dragen, andere kleren aan. Ik heb het allemaal verdomd.’’
Acht albums besloeg het verafschuwde platencontract, High Times is nummer zeven. Hoe kan Jay Kay dan het einde van de verbintenis vieren? Kay: ,,De platenmaatschappij wilde al tijden dolgraag een verzamelalbum. Ik heb uiteindelijk toegestemd, maar alleen op voorwaarde dat ze het contract daarna zouden ontbinden. Ze willen niet dat ik dit zeg, maar geld is het enige wat hen intresseert. En een verzamelaar van mij levert gewoon veel op. Ik ben de enige fatsoenlijke artiest die ze hebben, de enige die geld voor ze verdient.’’ Zou het? Enkele namen uit de Sony/BMG-stal: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen en George Michael.
Toen Jay Kay in 1992 de megadeal tekende, woonde hij nog in een kraakpand in West-Londen. Dat was al een hele verbetering; nadat hij als 16-jarige wegliep van huis, schooierde Kay rond als dakloze kruimeldief en werd hij zelfs bijna neergestoken. ,,Gelukkig miste die gast,’’ gromt de zanger terwijl hij door zijn pub ijsbeert. ,,Maar er waren meer van dat soort geintjes. Ik had vijanden. Mijn muzikale maat pleegde zelfmoord. Toen besefte ik dat ik wat van mijn leven moest maken en ben ik als een bezetene aan mijn muziek gaan werken. Als ik nu door mijn oude buurt rijd, dan zie ik nog steeds dezelfde eikels op dezelfde straathoek dezelfde drugs dealen. Ze kunnen de tering krijgen.’’
Kay’s volgende duistere periode - Jamiroquai was allang wereldwijd succesvol - was een vier jaar durende cocaïneverslaving. Nonchalant: ,,Geinige tijden heb ik gehad. Fantastische seks met bloedmooie meiden, veel gelachen. Maar uiteindelijk is het pokkenspul.’’ De zanger stopte met hulp van een vriend en is inmiddels bijna drie jaar clean. Met zijn mond vol snacks: ,,Stoppen is makkelijk zat: niet meer blowen, drinken of uitgaan, je telefoon niet meer opnemen en je adresboek verscheuren.’’
De Britse rioolpers smulde van de verslaving en de ontelbare bijbehorende excessen. Bij het verlaten van een Londense nachtclub ontspoorde de gebruikelijke uitwisseling van verbale onsmakelijkheden tussen Kay en de persmuskieten eens zódanig, dat een fotograaf de beroemdheid trakteerde op een kopstoot, de volgende dag uiteraard juichend voorpaginanieuws.
Kay: ,,Journalisten in dit land zijn klootzakken. Eindeloos vaak hebben ze me verkeerd geciteerd, verhalen volledig uit hun verband gerukt. Journalisten die nog nooit één noot hebben gezongen, willen met mij over muziek praten. Wat weten ze er in godsnaam van? Geen moer. Maar het laat me koud wat zo’n stukjesschrijver in zijn flutblaadje schrijft. Ik kijk, luister of lees al tien jaar niets meer over mezelf.’’
Afleiding van alle ongewenste media-aandacht vond Kay vooral in zijn grote passie: peperdure auto’s. Hoeveel Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s en Porsches hij bezit, is de zanger even kwijt. ,,Een stuk of twintig,’’ schat hij tussen twee pijltjes van een solo-potje darts door. ,,Maar ik rijd er zelden in. Dit rotland bekeurt en beboet je toch alleen maar.’’ Vier keer al verloor Jay Kay tijdelijk z’n rijbewijs. Grootste snelheidsovertreding: 280 kilometer per uur op de openbare weg.
,,Hé, ik ga wat eten,’’ meldt Jay Kay halverwege de volgende vraag. En weg is hij. Om even later - gezicht nog immer op onweer - terug te keren voor een publiekelijke ruzie met zijn al even geagiteerde pr-manager. ,,Ik wil dit niet meer!’’ horen we hem roepen. Alsof dat nog niet geheel duidelijk was.

With a fierce look Jay Kay, frontman of Jamiroquai, falls in his seat… in a chair in his privatepub. “Give me your questions, the sooner i am finished, the better it is ” that is what his bodylanguage is saying. To start off i will enquire how his latest cd came together. An impressing carrier, beautifull English estate and a breathtaking car collection: you would think, enough to satisfy a human being . But not Jamiroquai –singer Jay Kay. They can fuck themselves.
High Times. “a new record?” Jay Kay (36) raises and eyebrow. “there is only old songs on it”
Besides the 2 new songs, you would expect some joy about the carier overview. Jay Kay “That i finished my record deal with Sony/BMG, THAT is what i am happy about” Now i can finally start making some Real music, like i did in the beginning of my carreer. Experiment without the record company breathing down my neck for hits. The sickening music industry has always tried to change me into a cheesy popstar. Dump my band, no more strange hats, different clothing. I have done none of it.
8 albums contained the horrified album deal, High Times is number zeven. How could Jay Kay celebrate the end of that deal? Kay “The record company wanted a greatest hits for ages. When Jay kay signed his megadeal back in 1992, he was living in a squathouse in West-London. And that was an improvement, after leaving home at age 16, Kay bummed around as a homeless petty thief en almost got stabed. “Luckily he missed” growns the singer while he walks around his pub. “But there was more of that stuff. I had enemies. My musical partner commited suicide. After that i realised that i had to make something of my life and i started working on my music like i was possessed. When i drive through my old neighbourhood i still see the same pricks on the same street corner still dealing the same drugs. They can go fuck them selves.
Kay’s dark periode – Jamiroquai was already succesfull wordwide for a long time- is a cocaine addiction that lasted for 4 years. Laid back: “Funny times i had. Great sex with gorgeous girls, lot of laughs. But in the end cocaine is crap” The singer kicked the habit with the help of a friend, and has been clean for 3 years now. With his mouth full of snacks: “quiting is easy, no more blowing, drinking or going out, not picking up the phone and tearing up your adress book”.
The britisch tabloid press gobbeled up the news about his addiction including the numerous exesses. Leaving a London nightclub derailed as usual in the exchange of verball unpleasantness between kay and the paparazzi once it led to the point that a photographer treated the star to a head bud, and ofcourse the next day it was on the front page.
Kay: “Journalists in this country are assholes. They have often quoted me wrong, ripped up stories. Journalists who have never sung one single note of music wanna talk with me about music. For god’s sake what do they know about it. Nothing. But i don’t care what this person writes about me in his worthless magazine. I have not watched, listened or read something about myself for 10 years’.
Kay found some destraction in this unwanted media attention in his passion: expensive cars. Howmany Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s and Porsches he ownes, he kinda lost track there. “About 20” he estimates while he is throwing 2 dart’s in a solo dart game. “but i hardly ever drive them. This *country only gives tickets and fines” Jay Kay already lost his drivers license temporarily for 4 times. Biggest speeding violation: 280 KM per hour on a public road.
“Hey, i am gonna get me something to eat” is what Jay Kay announces halfway though my next question. And he is gone. A bit later – face still on thunder mode- he returns for a public aguement with his also aggitated pr-manager. “I don’t want this anymore!” we hear him yell. Like that was not obvious yet.

Please do take in account that
The journalist translated JK's words in dutch and i had to translate them back.
So, they are not real quotes!!
And Deesh thanks for the "cheesy" that was something i would never have thought of 
The thing that did shock me...they wanted him to dump the band!

Didnt they want to do that from the begining?
Make proper music like i did in the begining, i hope he mean EOPE and TROTSC and not natural energy
