COZMO JENKS - MILLINER FOR JAY ON TOUR
Hi everyone I found this article today, it only mentions Jay briefly, but thought it was worth posting...

Cozmo Jenks picks the best trilbies

Trilby-wearing tips

Recognised as one of Europe’s leading milliners, Cozmo Jenks draws inspiration from the English countryside in which she grew up. A natural entrepreneur, Jenks started buying old hats at markets around the country to customise and sell. The tiny business took over her spare bedroom for several years, until she opened her first boutique and atelier in Marylebone, Central London. Her fantastical hats are worn by Kylie Minogue, Jo and Leah Wood, Cilla Black and Brooke Shields. Jenks also accompanied Jay Kay, the Jamiroquai singer and hat fanatic, on tour, ensuring that his head was suitably covered at all times.

Stephen Jones Purple trilby with Swarovski crystals, £395, at Liberty (020-7734 1234)

This is more of an evening hat than something to wear in the day as it has plenty of “bling”. I wouldn’t wear it to a country wedding — it’s more city slick; its lines are taken from the classic men’s trilby. This is a fun, jazzy hat that will finish off any party outfit and will make you stand out from the crowd. The flat brim means that it suits those with long or oval faces best. I’d wear it with some black jeans, a little jacket and some seriously high heels.

Ted Baker red trilby, £30 (0845 1304278)

What I like about this neat little trilby is that it is so easy to wear — you can’t touch it for practicality. The colour is good and solid, too. I say wear it with something green and enjoy the festive spirit. The shape is almost like a porkpie hat, the difference being that the brim on a porkpie turns up all the way around, whereas on a trilby it is turned up only at the back. This isn’t an occasion hat but it is versatile: it would look just as good on a dog walk as in a trendy club.

Gabriella Ligenza Camilla trilby, £379 (020-7730 2200)

This hat has a smocked brim and a high crown, giving it an old, vintage feel. If I didn’t make my own hats, I would definitely buy this one as I love the ruched felt effect and the stripy ribbon. The clever feature of this hat is its red underside; it not only adds a shot of colour but also gives the complexion of the wearer a warm, rosy look. Luckily there are no protocols about women having to remove their hats indoors, so keep it on for as long as you dare.

Marie Mercie lilac trilby, £185 (020-7589 7534)

I like this unstiffened reworking of the trilby; it is, without question, the easiest to wear and most comfortable hat in my selection. Throw it on with your weekend jeans, leather jacket and a pair of Converse trainers and you will look effortlessly fashionable. I like its large brim — very imposing, and it will keep the winter sun off your face. You could wear it at a jaunty angle for that “eccentric artist” look. It would also look pretty with a corsage pinned to its side.

Cozmo Jenks Couture mint trilby, £625 (020-7258 0111)

This is not a classic trilby shape because the sweep is asymmetrical but, actually, it is easier to wear and kinder to the face, which can only be a bonus. I love the colour combination — the purple wistaria against the turquoise looks playful. This hat would look beautiful at the races with a purple overcoat or sharp red suit; you don’t always need to match your hat to your clothes.

Trilby-wearing tips

Arrow Trilbies look best when they are worn in and obviously loved — so don’t be too precious with your hats.

Arrow It looks neater if you keep your hair off your face when you are wearing one.

Arrow Surround your hat with tissue paper and store it in a hatbox.

Arrow Invest in a wire suede brush which will lift the pile of the trilby when it starts to look tatty.
