WORLD AIDS DAY - DECEMBER 1, 2006
Good Morning - Today, December 1, 2006 is World AIDS Day!
I figure that I post up when trivial things are going on, so it was only right of me to post up information regarding this day and this cause that has taken over my life - thank God by choice
All who know me know that I don't care where it came from, and to be honest, I don't care about a cure (there's never been a cure for a virus in the history of man). I also don't get in to the political side of it all..My focus is enriching the lives of those currently with the disease and preventing any more infections.
My day started off early today and it was great meeting strangers this morning and educating them about AIDS. Anyway, just to remind people...AIDS is still out there. The drugs are great, but they don't take away the disease. The only prevention is proper education combined with effective safer sex.
Just basic education, which I'm sure everyone knows...
***FLUIDS - Semen, Vaginal Fluids, Breast Milk, Blood, Amniotic Fluid, Spinal Fluid (NOT SALIVA OR SPIT)
***HOLES - Eyes, Nose, Mouth, Anus, Penis, Vagina (THESE ARE ALL MUCOUS MEMBRANES)
***Don't ever mix your fluids with someone elses holes or vice versa without a proper barrier - 100% of the time from start to finish.
***Get tested every 6 months and remember you can pass the virus without knowing it, because symptoms may not come out for 7 - 10 years.
It's that simple....really!
I don't want to be pushy about this, but truthfully if everyone knew and acted on what I posted above, then the infection rate wouldn't be so high...and wouldn't continue to climb.
To learn more about HIV/AIDS, please visit your local health clinic and/or PM me and I'll give you information. Also feel free to visit my 'needs to be updated' website (www.coveryourlover.info).
Thanks and have a lovely weekend.

i was thinking about you and actually waited for this post from you!
i'm thinking about the people i know who are infected and have died from HIV/Aids not only today, but all the time.
But I love the idea of this day to increase the awareness of others!

Thanks for this post Deesha. Thanks for always taking the time to spread the word and help increase AIDS awareness. It's not about false hope, but prevention. That's the only way we can fight this epidemic. Thank you for all you do!!!

It's important to make people aware. When I was young(er) everybody was afraid because HTLV3 (HIV was called that back then) and fullblown AIDS was something new and it was deadly and really scary... because of that young people protected themselves. Nowadays young(er) people have sex to the left and right with totally unknown persons without any protection whatsoever. People, especially young people, need to take care of themselves and use protection. If they're old enough to have sex they're old enough to take responsibility both for themselves and their partner(s). _________________ Old school forever! |

Thanks deesh - and same here as Bear, I was thinking of you today and was expecting to see this thread when I come home!
Thanks god I am not aware of any affected people in my family or circle of friends and acquaintances. But still, I have met a few infected people some years ago while visiting the "Aids-Hilfe" - (Hilfe = help) a german help organization, and had some conversations with them.
It is very important to continue the education and providing of information because i think there are still a lot of prejudices and false information in people's minds.
I just want to mention some numbers I have in my mind - not sure if they are up-to-date... correct me deesh, if there is anything wrong, please!
There are around 40 Million H.I.V infected people worldwide
...including children, younger than 15 years: more than 2 Million
New infections in 2006 - worldwide: more than 4 Million
Deaths in total since beginning of the epidemic: 25 Million
Each day in Germany: 7 new infections!!! _________________ ~ I look up to Heaven, every star I see is mine.

yep, thank U deesha for this thread
Information on knowledge and on the level and intensity of risk behaviour related to HIV/AIDS is essential in identifying populations most at risk for HIV infection and in better understanding the dynamics of the epidemic.
It's very easy to think that AIDS is something bad for other people to worry about - gay people, drug users, etc: luckily, nowadays, there r so many associations which work to bring AIDS education to young people in schools and it's good to know that they r concerned about HIV/AIDS and how it affects their daily lives. _________________

Thanks Deesh!!
I was also thinking about you..also 'cause we ( me and family) were wachting a full maratona of programs about HIV INTERNATIONAL DAY!
I'm one of thoose persons that does the test every six months..I've started mainly beacouse while I was a kid ( teeny) my mum was living in an Aids Free Zone ( now is an open area luckily and they talk to people and teach them how to be aware and respectfull)..but I must admit every time I go to get the results I'm scared..is not something logical..is just fear of which I'm ascamed of!!
Anyway, yesterday I learned that nowadays women are 50% of all HIV infected people NOT ONLY IN 3RD WORLD BUT EVERYWHERE and it's not anymore a sickness that catch only "certain category"!! It was very intersting and I hope this will help ppl to understand they are not safe just standing behing they're prejudices!
Just wanna thanks you and people like you ( I had a volounteer at school and she teached me how to be aware and take care of myself and my partners)..that works to make this a better, healtier and with less prejudices world!!
THANKS

Thank you much for giving this topic some love.
This cause means more to me than I can ever express...fighting it, educating and preventing anymore infections.
Never wait until the problem is at your doorstep to realize that it is a problem. It's great so many of you are proactive in your lives concerning this disease.
2007 I am going to be diving more into doing HIV and AIDS work...2006 made me realize I need to refocus and give more to this cause that has taken so many lives. Great statistics Mouse - shame, isn't it? Thank you for posting them up!
I sound like a dreamer - I know...but hey, everybody's got their something!
Live life like it's golden people!

Here's my dollop of love for your thread Deesha.
I'm glad you laid it on the line in very graphic layman's terms.
It's preventable . . . that means that we can all do something about it, until by the grace of God a treatment or cure is found by those geniuses in white lab coats.
Whoever has AIDS, and why ever they have AIDS still makes them a victim. We all need to show compassion and solidarity, every day.
Keep the home fires burning Deesh !!! It's people like you who do make a difference, your passion humbles me, my respect embraces you and my heart goes out to all those afflicted and effected by AIDS. _________________ Jamily to the bone !!!

I posted a bit of this in the WYGL topic when she was raising money, but I just wanted to give love to longtime Jamily member, Ezbe. She and some of her co-workers took part in a AIDS walk on Sunday and they raised over 700 pounds for people with HIV and AIDS in the London and surrounding areas. Way to Go EZ
Also, its 546am and I'm about to leave for Washington, DC where I will meet with government officials in Congress to discuss better allocation of AIDS funding. So I won't be around for a few days.
I'm nervous, but very excited that I get this opportunity.
This fight never, ever ends...

Many 'still ignorant about HIV'
Terry Higgins died from an Aids-related illness in 1982
There is still widespread ignorance about HIV, particularly among young people, research has suggested.
A survey by the HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust found more than 20% of people aged 18 to 24 mistakenly thought there was a cure for HIV.
Among the same age group almost a quarter believed condoms have holes in them which let HIV through.
And more than one in ten young people thought the virus could be passed through kissing.
This is only a theoretical risk, and possible only if both parties have open sores, cuts or bleeding gums which bleed into each other. There has only been one suspected case of HIV being passed on in this way.
The poll of 1,000 adults was carried out to mark 25 years since the death of Terry Higgins, whose battle with Aids inspired friends and colleagues to set up the charity.
The results showed that ignorance about the virus were not confined to the younger age group.
Across all age groups, 28% of people either thought that condoms had holes in which let HIV through, or said they did not know.
Twelve percent thought that sharing cutlery carried a risk of HIV transmission, and 10% thought you can be infected through sweat.
Only one in three people who were surveyed said they thought they had received good sex education at school.
Much confusion
Nick Partridge, chief executive of Terrence Higgins Trust, said: "It's frightening that 25 years after Terry Higgins' death, this level of confusion exists.
"The lack of good sex education means many young people are leaving school ignorant about HIV and safer sex.
"HIV is now the fastest growing serious health condition in the UK, and there is no cure. It's time to get our facts straight."
Terry Higgins was among the first people to die from an Aids-related illness in the UK.
Since his death in 1982, more than 17,000 others have died from Aids-related diseases and there are now more than 70,000 people living with HIV in the UK.
More people than ever before were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2006.
Groups most at risk of HIV in the UK continue to be gay men and the African community.
Anti-retroviral drugs can keep HIV in check for most people who take them.
But there is growing concern that the drugs will become increasingly ineffective, as HIV - which can change its structure with astonishing speed - evolves ways to combat their action.
