"Top Of The Pops" Will end this summer!
Hello,
I got some bad news concerning one of the most important and iconic British Music shows . It appears that "Top Of The Pops", one of the most important UK music shows, will be cancelled this summer after 42 years on the air. According to NME.COM:
Top Of The Pops axed after 42 years
Lng running UK music show to end
Top Of The Pops has been axed by the BBC after 42 years on air.
The final episode of the iconic music show will air during the summer.
The programme switched from BBC1 to BBC2 in 2003, but the rebranding of the show failed to increase its ratings.
The first edition of the show was broadcast on January 1 in 1964, when the The Beatles where number one with 'I Want to Hold Your Hand', and was presented by Jimmy Saville.
In its 70's heyday Top Of The Pops was watched by 19 million people, however in recent times the viewing figures fell as low as 1 million.

This show was responsible to bringing interest into Jamiroquai back in the 1990s and 2000s, and it is really sad to see such a important music showcase ending after so long . If you would like to watch some classic clips from TOTP concerning Jamiroquai, here are the 2 clips from the show I uploaded on YouTube a while back:
- Too Young To Die (Live TOTP 1993)

- Too Young To Die (Clearer Clip Live TOTP 1993)

I don't know if we fans can get together and lodge a complaint against the BBC for this move, but if something like this happens, will let you all know! Thanks for listening and Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000 _________________

That's too bad.
I think anymore with Cable and Satellite tv, with all the channels and options they bring to the table, it's probably one reason why it's not anymore. For the same reason that American Bandstand doesn't exist anymore, and Soul Train can only be seen at like 2 A.M. now. I'm sure for a time those shows were on in primtime on ABC or NBC or whatever just like TOTP was on the main BBC channel.
That gets me into my 2nd reason- I think people selectively watch only certain epsiodes for bands/artists/groups that they like. They'll tune into Jamiroquai one week, but then they see that Nickelback is the guest the next week and don't care about them. So the JMQ ratings are high, and the Nickelback ratings drop signifcantly. If they're not booking a U2 or Madonna calibur performer on there every week, that's probabll another reason for the ratings drop. Are they getting the "top-end" music acts that they used to get?
No offense Brent, but maybe beside the good bootlegs you get from the show, maybe this one should just be let go (but if you get an online petition going I'll sign it). _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Speaking as an English person this move doesn't surprise me. Truthfully it doesn't bother me either. I've not watched the show for years. It can't compete with all the other versions of music media around. It's not on call like channels like MTV etc...

Exactly Pete. No disrespect to those who DO watch TOTP but so many of the artists on it are what I would call second rate pop acts. I don't like to class all acts together but on this occcasion: tough!! This in turn has a knock on effect for what I would call the genuine "talented" artists. Would they even want to appear on a show thats going down the pan?
If I want to see live music on tv I'll tune into a show like Jools Holland which to me is of a much higher callibre. I'll admit I won't always like every artist on there but it still gets my vote over a show like TOTP...
Example of the artists that have recently appeared on Jools Holland
I can't find an archive list for the last few months for TOTP & it's a bit late now so I need to sleep! If/when I do find a list I'll post a link for that for comparison purposes!!
(P.S. Off topic but just seen The Strokes are on the show this week!! YAY!!) |

Exactly my thoughts, VI. TOTP being pulled? Boo-bloody-hoo, nobody over the age of 12 pays any attention to it any more anyway. Jools has some truly awful musicians on his show sometimes, but he also has some equally great ones, and it's always amusing watching him get slowly more drunk as filming wears on over the course of the show.
Thanks for brightening up my evening a little with this wonderful news, Jamirofan.
