Jamiroquai Brings Funk Odyssey To Canada

Many of you Torontonians didn’t even know that the little man with the funny hats and fastest feet in music today was right in your midst this past weekend.

And why, pray tell, was Jay Kay — leader and funk force behind U.K.’s Jamiroquai — in town without even the slightest murmur, aside from doing a little jig live at Electric Circus? Not only is he promoting the coming of A Funk Odyssey (released Sept. 11), his fifth album to date, but the cat in the hat comes bearing news of a Canadian tour starting in March and some secret gigs in the T-Dot even sooner, in September.

"Fuck it. I might even just do a rooftop show," says the charismatic frontman, while tucked away in the Cigar Lounge of the Windsor Arms Hotel in downtown Toronto. There’s no confirmation as of yet, but Torontonians might just get a chance to witness the man with canned heat in his heels at glitzy dance club, the Guvernment.

Jay Kay presses on with details as he realizes March is too long of a wait to witness his traditionally wild live show: "I’ll tell you what, I’m gonna try and do two gigs here before that [tour]. One in Montreal, one in Vancouver. It’s well worth it. I really like it here, I love it. It’s cosmopolitan, everybody’s cool."

And how does the Space Cowboy feel about Canada’s burgeoning dance scene?

"I feel like it’s on the boil," says Jay Kay with his typical elfish grin. "Like it’s on the cusp of..." His fingers start to dance at his belly and side, as if he’s playing the funkiest of funk basses as he finishes his statement: "One big fucking full-on rave-up!"
