GIG IN THE SKY - reviews and pictures
GIG IN THE SKY - Reviews from CosmicMouse, Part I-II-III
PART I - Airport Munich, CosmicMouse meets Jay Kay
Dear Jamily,
I just arrived home safely from my most intense Jamiroquai experience. I'm still searching for the perfect words to descibe what i feel... I am overwhelmed - so many highlights, great moments, pure excitement - it will be very hard for me to keep it short, so you all have to bear with a long and detailed report from me.
8.00 am
Just in time I arrive at the airport in Hannover. I even managed to sleep more than 5 hours and feel fresh and ready for my adventure.
8.50 am
Taking off to Munich. After some busy hours of preparations the last two days, I finally find some silent minutes to realize what I will expect the next 24 hours. At the moment I am not thinking that much about the gigs but I feel a bit nervous about the fact that I will soon have a camera team around me. How will the tv crew be? Doubts are appearing.... will I be able to answer their expectations?
10.00 am
Landing in Munich. After picking up my luggage a friendly guy from Sony Ericsson welcomes me and leads me to the meeting-point for the "Gig in the sky" passengers, where we get two writsbands (one for the plane and one for the after party where the second gig will take part) and some more information.
The RTL team arrives from Cologne.
Malte, Marte, Melanie and Olli* - a bunch of cool people who will be my company for the whole long day. I am relieved - they are all very nice and caring; I get a microphone which is permanantly fixed on my Jacket.
(Just for going on the toilet it will be removed shortly - thanks god! )
*Malte: the reporter
Marte: camera-woman
Olli: responsible for the sound
Melanie: organiser, my personal assistent, providing me with food and drinks and useful hints
We already start to shoot some scenes: my arrival at the airport, my check-in and a few little interviews. I feel like an actor or a star - strange feeling. I have to concentrate NOT to look into the camera which is one big rule, I was told. Ha. Not as easy as it sounds...
After the check-in we are going to a big VIP area in the terminal where we get a catering and presents. Everone gets a shirt, a rucksack - personalized with name. As I have won only 2 days before mine has a neutral print but it's still cool!
Everyone got a mobile phone with Jamiroquai tracks and screensaver. I got a white one - fantastic!
Now we have to pass away some hours by waiting, eating, chatting, meeting people. David and Sharon are around! I also meet cooladi (hope to read a review from you as well!!) and finally Susanna - guess where? On the toilet - big hello and happy welcoming. You are a crazy cow, it was a pleasure to meet you in person! (Cosmic mums rules!)
I am calling Bear and Miran for a last goodbye before we fly.
David

Sony Ericsson Crew
2.30 pm
People are getting a bit more excited because the plane with Jay and the band is expected to land in the next minutes. I - followed by the TV team - am heading over to the windows, observing the plane arriving in front of our terminal. It looks impressive! With Sony Ericsson logo of course, and a big buffaloman shape. Jay is getting out, going downstairs, followed by the band and crew.
We are talking with Tim (cannot remember his full name) from Sony Ericsson and organise with his help a little meet with Jay for me and RTL. I am thrilled - this was not really planned. I thought we might meet him after the gigs, but now they told us I will be allowed to speak to him shortly just before we take off.
3.30 pm
Boarding time! Seeing the plane from inside finally! Have I once said the stage in the Jazz Cafe was small? Forget it! They only pulled off a few rows in the leading part of the plane, very little space for the band, maybe 6 m2? And the passengers are sitting like on usual flights on their numbered seats.
I have a bout 10 rows in front of me, but I am sitting at the gangway so I can see quite good. There are loads of rows behind me - I guess not everyone in the plane has a good view. At least there are monitors along the ceiling.
4.00 pm
Jay's coming!! We are told to come outside again to meet him. We are standing on the top of the stairs when Jay comes off a black car and is stepping up the stairs where we welcome him!
We are told before that we going to get one minute only, so I don't really expect a long conversation, just a handshake - therefore I haven't made a plan before what to say or ask.
But he was lovely, in a very good mood, teasing with the camera and welcomes me with 2 kisses on the cheeks.
I am sending him lots of greetings on behalf of the Jamily of Jamirotalk and explain him shortly what I mean. I tell him that the most of the front-row people on their gigs are Jamirotalkers. (maybe a bit piled on, but hey... it's nearly the truth! )
Then I wish him good luck with the new album - without Sony!!
I think that little add-on pleased him a lot - he starts laughing and says: "Yeah, it's gonna be a good one - if not the best!!" *dirty laugh*
I throw in, winking: "Back to oldschool" He now starts telling a bit about future plans - I must apologize, I cannot recall his exact words cause I was a bit jazzed. But I remember him mentioning "more brass, more live, back to what we used to do" - he also says that they might start again in May, but I am not 100% sure if he means starting with writing or even touring. I hopefully get the recording of our chat then I can re-check his exact words.
We are going together into the plane (front door - next to the cockpit, by the way - not the one in the middle where the other people went in). Tim from SE is handing him over one of my little jamirotalk flyers I've prepared and he explains him who I am. Doh! I thought Jay had been briefed before - never mind. I immediately take out another jamirotalk card from me with his password for his Jamirotalk account. I invite him to come and visit Jamirotalk and to leave some greetings for the fans. I know the chance that this will happen is rather small, but hey... I have tried.
(We had a little conversation about the password but I cannot tell you here, otherwise you'd know the password...lol)
That's it. I say thanks and goodbye and turn me around in order to go back to my place when I see that in this front part of the plane the whole band is sitting. I am shaking hands and say hello to all of them, congrat Rob to his little baby girl. Short but still very special moments! It feels like meeting old friends!
Back on my seat, I am giving another interview for my RTL team. I cannot remember what I said... I was still stunned...
I am glad that he was chatty and in a good mood.
...............
PART II - In the air, breaking records -
4.15 pm
We take off! After a while we get lunch - watch the buffaloman on the pudding!!
The staff is still preparing for the gig, they open the doors of the baggage racks where they have located boxes and coloured lights. Pretty cool! Two rows in front of me Rick Pope is placed with his small equipment:
After some more time we reach the height of 35.000 feet - enough to break records.
The boys are coming on "stage" - Jay is standing, the boys are all sitting. The girls cannot be seen anywhere but I do hear them singing, so they must be somewhere in the front area near the cockpit, behind the curtain, I guess. There was just no place for them.
Great performance! The sound is pretty good - which I didn't expect in the plane. I am trying to record with the little "fan-camera" from the TV crew but cannot film the whole gig, I am sorry. After a while my arm hurts a lot, also I am told to put down the cam several times, because the people behind me cannot see.
And of course I don't feel like sitting still the whole time - I wanna move and groove - as far as this is possible while sitting in a plane... We were not allowed to stand up during the performance. Understandable, but a little bit annoying. Anyways - I am having a lot of fun!
How great to hear Radio for the first time live!
They do a bridge to FJLIS which had the lyrics of the song but sounds very different, calmer. I really dig it - so nice to hear something "new". Then they continue and start playing the song (FJLIS) like we know it.
Some turbulences... ... funny somehow! This reminds me again that we are up in the sky, over the clouds - I nearly forgot about that!!
The following tracks are very nicely arranged as well. Some familiar sounds, but also some surprises. I loved the different version of Travelling. Refreshing!
I so feel like dancing, but how?
When I look around I am a bit disappointed of the audience - they are sitting there as if they are watching a movie. Ok, we cannot stand up and jump, but you can clap, shout, just party a bit.
Anyways, Susanna and me - we are having our fun and give our best!
RTL is filming me most of the time... David Rowe is crouching on the ground a bit more in the front, taking pics.
It's good to have in mind that there will be another gig in Athens where we will have more possibilities to move and dance and show our appreciation.
After the gig Jay is talking a bit how he experienced this special gig, and again talkes about future plans. Again I hear "May" but he also says that it is good to have some break from touring, also in regards to the fact that Rob just got another baby.
Then Jay is getting congratulations on breaking a few records - you have listed them somewhere in this thread already.
Again I am giving interviews. (Hard job - when you do it the whole day, I can tell you!!) But also Susanna is very busy expressing her excitement to several reporters.
Susanna - very busy
Cooladi - just cool
....................
Part III - Afterparty in Athens
7.00 pm
We are landing in Athens. Arriving at the terminal we just run in the after party. It's already crowded - full of business- and sony ericsson people. We are filming some scenes again. I am calling Sandra and giving her the setlist from gig one. They also film this... Sandra did you notice?
But now I am getting nervous. I wanna see the stage - it's already full and the first rows are crowded. The gig is about to start soon and I have no good place... I decide to find a way to get to the front. A bit cheeky I push myself to the second row and see 3 guys in front of me. I am asking them if they are "real" jamiroquai fans - if not I'd love to swap places... (I can't believe I said that... lol... not my manner, normally)... but it turns out that I asked the right persons. They are indeed SE workers and not so much jamiroquai fans - but first they want to make me believe they ARE big fans. A funny conversation starts and we are debating who the bigger fan is. (in a funny way - those guys are hilarious - later they start singing: "CosmicMouse is in the house"... )
Ok, I put out some jamirotalk flyers, asking them if they have ever heard of this site. "Errrr... no... whats that?"
I said: Ok guys, if you WERE big jamiroquai fans, you actually WOULD know this site.
I explained what jamirotalk is, what my role is, but they still wanted a proof that I am the "world biggest fan"...I have to sing a jamiroquai song - but this isn't enough as it seems. Then they ask me what kind of mobile phone I have.... I show them my Sony Ericsson phone and they are happy!! Even with buffaloman display... ha! They are convinced. I am front row - right in the middle, Jay's micro in front of me. YES!
Seriously, they were a bit crazy but real gentlemen and I am glad that I was so smart aleck.
We had a lot of fun, I am waiting for them to register here. They said they would.
8.30 pm(?)
The boys and girls are coming on stage - again!
Has anyone ever had two jamiroquai gigs on one day? This is awesome!!!
The atmosphere is great. The audiece is enjoying the performance a lot.
(The setlist was already posted a few pages before)
I start recording again, but after a while the security comes and forbits me to go on. The guy seems to be very strict and observes me the whole time
Taking photos seems to be ok, so I stick to that for a while. Later on I record a bit with my little digicam - until the memorycard is full. Haven't checked the quality yet. Will do that later and keep you informed.
What a cool version of High Times!!! so different! There is no brass, but I don't care. It's so good to see the boys again - Paul is fantastic as usual. I hear several times people in the crowed who say: wow, the bassist is great!
Jay announces (for the second time) that Rob got a baby and introduces the whole band.
Again great versions of Radio/FJLIS, Travelling very cool as well!
At some point, between two songs, Jay starts singing supersonic - nice one, but then he says: "naah, not tonight."
The rest of the gig is more or less standard, familiar - but they do sound fresh. I enjoy it loads!
11.00 pm
When they finish the gig with Deeper Underground, my energy leaves me. But I still manage to jump. After that I don't feel good - circulation problems or maybe just exhaustion. No sure.
But there are still some final interviews to do. So we do the last shootings and I get something to eat and drink and we chill out a bit.
At midnight the party is over and it takes a while until the bus to the hotel is leaving.
It's 3 am when I am in bed, it takes some time until I can come down and find some sleep, but at 4.30 am the telephone of my hotel room is ringing, in order to wake me up.
8.30 am
Sitting in my plane, driving to the runway .. I can see the gig-plane again! It's still standing there.
Unbelieveble which unique experience we have been made there yesterday - high in the sky with jamiroquai.
This event is one big chapter in my own jamiroquai history. I am so thankful I could be part of it.
I was thinking a lot of you guys - I hope I could represent the jamily worthy.
Let's wait for official reports (like mine from RTL...hehe) and hopefully good quality recordings.
Mouse
EDIT:
Here is the link to the my clipfish videoclip which made me win the ticket for gig in the sky! I know.. it's really amateurish, bad, boring and whatever not... and I am everything but proud of this one-take-shot, but hey... the jury liked it and so I won. I couldn't care less now!

It's the craziest gig in history. Faster, further and most of all... damn high! 10 000 meters above the ground, 200 selected guests and the british superstars Jamiroquai are doing their highest performance of their career - in a plane.
It is the most exclusive event that a fan can experience.
And in order to take part, some people have really put their back into something, because those who wanna fly have to shoot:
Clipfish.de called everyone to join in...and dozens participated in various ways - as hat- and moving-double... or maybe even as driving lounge suite, made in USA of course... She tries here with sunglasses and dance interlude.
And, the following presentation, including squaw costume and disco lights has won the race. Under the feathers: Meike from Vechelde, near Braunschweig.
10 am in the morning - airport Munich. Clipfish.de winner Meike is checking in for the excusive gig in the sky and lets us then into the secret about how she got around to making her individual video-scene:
"Well, the costume-box was still standing there, because my kids had just celebrated carnival - and I thought.. hey super, that's it!"
At the same time in London: Here, Jamiroquai are stepping into the plane, in which also Meike will be sitting later.
To perform a concert in an aeroplane is also for the musicians something very special.
Little interview with Jay (I won't translate because it can be seen in other videoclips already - he is talking about breaking records, ect.)
Ok then, let's go!
Airport Munich - the gig-plane is ready for departure and Meike is ought to board now.
Quite suddenly Jamiroquai-singer Jay Kay is stanging in front of her.
"Hello Meike, how are you doing? Are you looking forward to hearing our gig in the sky today? Crazy idea?" "Yeah, crazy idea"
"I hope everything will be all right and will be working. But let's go in, we will be taking off soon."
4 pm - last call for the flight Jamiroquai to Athens, and winner Meike has already reached more than she has expected. She didn't have much time to think during her meet.
"I just tried to concentrate on the english language...and, yeah.. but, yes... it was fantastic, he was relaxed and I enjoyed it a lot!" (see my annoyed face expression after that...lol... I was not in the mood for an interview that moment...hehe)
Building up the stage in 10 000 meters height. The preperations took 2 days - now everything has to run precisely. Then it's time for breaking the world record.
A four-men-band (they cannot count, or what?) - a plane filled to capacity, including side effects.
Jay: "oh, turbulences... hold tight everyone... hey, I love it!"
After 25 minutes everything is over and Meike Melansek is satisfied, even though everything was different.
"Actually I nearly forgot that I am high in the sky, just when it was suddenly shaking, when we came into the turbulences I felt a bit... queasy... but that was forgotten very fast again."
Arrival on the airport in Athens. Jamiroquai are in the world book of records from now on - and also Meike Melansek won't forget this flight in a while , because she has seen Jamiroquai live in a height of 10 000 meters - who else can claim to have experienced something like that?!

Gig in the Sky - latest news | 27.02.2007
After being flown out to Munich from their respective locations, the Gig in the Sky competition winners checked in for the mystery-destination flight eager with anticipation for what the unplugged gig and afterparty might bring. The winners, and the band, are currently mid-flight, having taken off from Munich at roughly 15.00 GMT. Of the winners, the furthest travelled has to be a group of six from Johannesburg, South Africa. Two of them, David and Rudy, said after that leaving South Africa at 8pm on Monday night it had been a long journey but that it was well worth it! Guests were each given a free bag with their name on it and funky Jamiroquai embroidery accross the front. A collectors item already, no doubt! As soon as the plane lands in the secret destination, Jamiroquai.com will be uploading more pictures, news and the full setlist so check back soon. Safe trip Jamiroquai! |

Gig in the Sky - Just Landed! | 27.02.2007
Jamiroquai have just landed in.....Athens, Greece, after what was an amazing gig by all accounts. Upon boarding the specially adapted plane in Munich, attendees were greeted by air stewardesses in "Cosmic Girl" uniforms! Upon take-off, the overhead lockers opened up to reveal flashing disco lights. Jamiroquai performed at the front of the plane where the first 6 or 7 rows of seats had been removed. Guests had to remain in their seats, presumably for health and safety reasons, but as there was a camera crew filming the performance, they could still see everything from tv screens throughout the plane. There was a small bit of turbulence during the performance but like a true professional, Jay simply clung onto an overhead locker and carried on. It's now official, Jamiroquai have entered the Guinness Book of Records - for The Highest Ever Gig! During the flight, a meal of chicken was served with chocolate mousse for dessert. There was 10 golden Tickets amongst the dinners served, with the lucky recipients winning the chance to meet and greet the band. Nobody went away empty-handed though - everyone got the new Sony Ericsson mobile phone and special Gig in the Sky commerative bag. We will be uploading photos and video as they come in, but for now, here's the full setlist - Jamiroquai played for 30 minutes
1. Radio - this was the first time Radio was played live!
2. Feels Just Like it Should
3. High Times
4. If I Like it I do it
5. Travelling Without Moving
6. Runaway |

MLS

Sony Ericsson and Jamiroquai Attempt to smash Guinness World Record
Sony Ericsson WALKMAN® launches Gig in the Sky!
Sony Ericsson is taking music to another level by attempting to break the
World Record for the Highest Ever Gig.
Forget arenas, stadiums and festivals, the world famous Jamiroquai will be performing live to an exclusive audience of 200 special guests – in a specially rigged jet, 35,000 ft above the ground!
The Gig in the Sky, will take off from Munich, Germany on February 27th 2007, featuring Jay Kay and the rest of his band performing some of Jamiroquai’s greatest hits, on a custom made stage, with a full PA sound system and lighting effects.
The exhilarating musical feast is attempting to go down in the record books as the world’s ‘Highest ever Concert’, with an official Guinness World Record adjudicator present on the jet to judge this attempt. Fingers crossed ‘Gig in the Sky’ will reach the optimum height set down in the strict guidelines that have been put in place by Guinness.
To complete this ultimate in in-flight entertainment, the jet will descend into a secret international airport for an elite aftershow party where JK and his band will perform another live concert to an audience of over 1000 people.
Craig Glenday, editor in chief of Guinness World Records, said “This is not
just some big name knocking out a few tunes on a guitar for fellow
passengers – we’re talking about an actual gig! I’ve every confidence in JK, Sony Ericsson and the doubtless cast of hundreds you’d need to pull off such a concert in the clouds. Good luck!” |

JAMIROQUAI GIG BREAKS SIX WORLD RECORDS
British band JAMIROQUAI broke six world records when they played a concert aboard an airplane at 35,000 feet (10,668 metres) earlier this week (begs26FEB07). The COSMIC GIRL stars, fronted by singer JAY KAY, performed on a flight from London to Athens, Greece via Munich, Germany.
The records broken were
* highest ever concert
* fastest ever concert
* highest ever recording
* fastest ever recording
* highest gig in a plane
* fastest gig in a plane
All were officially recorded by the Guinness Book Of Records. Earlier today (28FEB07), Jay Kay revealed he is quitting the music industry because he is "bored" and won't play with Jamiroquai again until he gets his inspiration back. |

article from dutch newssite FOK.nl:
| Quote: |
|
It doesn't have much new information, just the fact that 7 dutch fans are on the plane, including a 24 year old dutch fan from Sneek called Jackie Hettinga, who also got to shake hands with Jay.
