Berlin
Hi everyone,
As some of you already know, I will be going to Berlin for 5 or 6 months. I had been delaying an internship over and over but a few weeks ago I finally sent all my application letters to companies in Holland and Germany (with a little help of Meike and Sandriche, thanks!), and I had some good responses.
To make a long story short; I got a place at a cool company located in the center of Berlin, which I am very happy about!
Now the thing is...I don't know anyone in Berlin! I've already had a short look on the memberlist and only saw 3 registered users located in Berlin of which one posts relatively often... So, I wonder if there are any people from Berlin that haven't mentioned it I would love to meet some people from the Jamily there!
Actually, I hope to meet up with Sandriche there some time and maybe Meike and Bear (if they can/want!). Anyone else would be welcome too!
Also, if anyone has some good tips for living, exploring, etc in Berlin, please tell me! Oh, and I'm also looking for a room there, so if you've got a spare one of those.....you know the route! (okay, minimum chance, but at least I can try, right?) _________________ The name's Rob, just Rob |

Hey Rob that's amazing. It will be a fantastic experience, maybe a bit hard in the first times but I'm sure you'll settle in very quickly.
Good luck! _________________ I once had a 10 years of Travelling Without Moving celebrations banner here... |

Hi Funkie Junkie,
I am living 2 hours away from Berlin - would be cool to arrange a little meeting. Let's keep this in mind, definitely!!
(mr.az - the trabant used to be the car in East Berlin, before the fall of the wall - but that's ages ago.
I think nowadays it's a rarity to see a trabant - even in Berlin.)
Anyway, I guess I am not a good help in tips for exploring Berlin - I feel like a tourist myself when I am there.
Good luck, Rob! Glad that you made it!

I was in Berlin in 1999 and I saw many of them. A lot of rich people buy those Trabbies and tune them with snazzy colours and strange parts. It's a status symbol, like the old Fiat 500 in Italy...
Then original one:
Just an example of what I'm talking about:
Rich people wannabe in the spotlight but in the end they're so trivial... _________________ I once had a 10 years of Travelling Without Moving celebrations banner here... |

yes, that's what I meant - rich people are buying trabants nowadays - and pimp them up. In comparison to the times of the GDR in which the trabant was the usual car for the people in East Germany - if you had a car you had a trabant - it was a status symbol in those times.
But after 1990 the trabant disapeard very fast from the street.
Today it is a cult, and a kind of rarity.

Maybe I'm driving a bit offtopic but there's a movie about Berlin that touched my soul. I saw it two years ago, it's called Good Bye Lenin!. Some more news here. _________________ I once had a 10 years of Travelling Without Moving celebrations banner here... |

as rare as trabbis might be these days - there is one driving around here in leicester! it's always parked outside the house where a friend of mine lives and i'm always tempted to leave a note on the windscreen in german just to find out if this car belongs to a german immigrant or not HEHE |

trabbi - the last sign of the ddr... it is a real clut car
sorry but i hate berlin
i was there often and i know the city and im not excited of it... everything is grey and maybe you know the friedrichsstreet or maybe you know more checkpoint charlie yes its a very good street but if you go to a street nearby this one youll see the normal berlin...
old grey scyscraper, sometimes poor people or people that lost their optimism. in the underground or better s-bahn you will need some bravery when you use it at midnight.
the locations you should go to are the "reichstag" (it will take some time till you can go there) the friedrichsstreet, the europecenter (europacenter) and you should go to the old rest of the "berliner mauer" (the wall that was the border between the brd and ddr) and the locations nearby. (or better everythign around the reichstag^^)
and where to sleep?
hmmm i dont know... _________________ maxud braucht funk food denn dann bleibt maxud maxud

FJ - Congratulations!
Maxud - You just described the majority of cities across the world. There are poor people everywhere that have lost their optimism. There are also rich people everywhere that have lost their optimism. That's hard to escape
Also, the fact that you live in Germany may play a part in you hating Berlin. For someone who has never been, it's a chance to see another culture, another city, other than their own and that's dope. It's like when people say 'I'd love to go to New York City or I'd love to live in New York City'. While I DO love New York, I am a bit jaded because I live near it and am there all the time.
I am excited to go to Berlin and anywhere else I've never been. It also depends on who you are with. If you go with chill people, you can have a good time no matter if the environment sucks or not. Well...maybe that's just me...
So FJ - hopefully you will meet some other people in your school or people that are more familiar with the city. Regardless, have a great time and enjoy yourself. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

When I went there back in 1999 I could breathe in the air the will of rebuilding the city. I remember Postdamer platz was a big construction site and this view enchanted me. It's pretty different to find a capital city in Europe with a so big will of renewal. I can understand what Maxud said, it's a citizen point of view, mine is a tourist one.
I'd like to come back there just to see how the city changed. _________________ I once had a 10 years of Travelling Without Moving celebrations banner here... |
