Here's an update about the gig...

On 14 September Jamiroquai percussionist Sola Akingbola and his band 'Critical Mass' performed in London as part of The Mayor's Thames Festival 2008.

A few photos of him and his band performing can be found at Flickr.com.

If you were at the event and saw Sola perform please feel free to post a mini-review or tell us about it by adding a comment with this news story.

I know it was awhile ago,but here is a little review:

Sola Akingbola & Critical Mass
2/24/2009 4:56:04 AM

Sola Akingbola is of Yoruba descent. A brilliant musician with rhythm not just in his blood but in every fibre of his being, he is the percussionist recruited by Jay Kay to add his unique flavour to his project Jamiroquai’s sound – and we all know the huge international success of this collaboration.

In his performance with his band Critical Mass at the Mayor’s Thames Festival in September 2008, he made a clear point of his pride in this Yoruba heritage. Performing with two backing singers, a full live band set-up and two of his native talking drums, he took the audience in front of the Green Man Stage on a journey of discovery. The high point and, for most of the audience, surprise came when he called out to the network of Yoruba communities around the world, in Brazil, in Trinidad and Cuba. It was a strong performance of beauty and originality, showing common roots to a wide variety of cultures and drawing listeners into the depth of its message. In the lyrics, Sola drew us into a world of Yoruba sayings with deep mythological roots in ancient civilisations – through words sung in Yoruba and then translated into English. Then of course, being a percussionist at heart, Sola also made everyone dance. The talking drums add a unique beat which seems alive in the wide variety of sounds they are able to produce. Sola himself used a variety of percussion instruments while being a hugely charismatic, involving stage performer with a full blend of talented people behind him. The Conscious Verdict: four stars out of five. A big star for authenticity. Here’s an international musician, a great role model in that he is committed to going back and exploring his Yoruba roots and portraying the beauty, strength, mystery of the Yoruba race, and is hugely entertaining while doing it. Because there is more than one kind of globalisation. We support the kind that takes into account and celebrates the multiplicity of cultures. We don’t want all to become the same. The only thing that’s missing: Exposure! Right now Sola is rehearsing with his band for an appearance at the Percussion Festival in Krakow, Poland, 18 - 22 February. We will talk to him about his experience there and his future plans after that.
