UBUNTU Linux
Hi, after using Windows Xp SP2 for a long time, I want to try a new OS, cause I want to use the "full" power of the 64bits of my cpu... (the 64bit version of Windows xp has a lot of bugs, such as any version of Vista, so...)

And as the best OS in the planet nowadays is the Mac OS X and I don't have a Mac * Laughing I want to know how many users here use the Linux distribution called Ubuntu (very famous because of it's system stability and faster speed compared to the Microsoft one..).

well if someone here uses this OS I want to know things such as:

Software you use to :
play mp3
play dvd
play divx

If you can run Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop - Illustrator - A Reader - In Design...)

And if you had problems, what kind of problems you had...

Thanks in advance.

*there is a MAC OS X project to make it run in any "normal" pc but it doesn't recognize every hardware.... and, of course, it's ilegal Razz

software???
linux???
hahaha!

you dont have to search software for linux to do the things you want ;-P

When you install Linux (i use suse linux 10.2) you can choose software and so on... the installation is as long as the one from windows xp but after that installation you dont have to install programs

but the best thing is when you install linux parallel to windows - you just need 3 partitions one for windows one for datas in FAT32 and one for linux maybe in reiser fs or it was named something like that...
and its no problem to install them parallel "the grub loader" helps^^

Use WMware to run a virtual XP inside Linux if you need special applications such as PhotoShop etc. Wink

funny you opened this topic the day of the release of Ubuntu 7.04...Wink

Get it from ubuntu.com, it's one of the easiest Linux distributions like Mandriva, SuSe or Fedora...

linux is a good alternative to windows!
(microsoft copies things from linux too^^ what about open office??? looks a bit like office 2007 right? but linux copies the best things from microsoft too)

of course at the beginning you are a bit irritated to use another operating system but after a time youll see the advantages^^

in my opinion are there only three disadvantagess:
1. the bootsequence takes a too long time (but that doesnt matter)
2. hardware and driver are often difficult to get
3. you have to use alternate software too (with "wine" you cant interpolate windows)and its negative for all gamer - i dont have to say more...

you can run under linux with a virtual machine (vm ware for example - i think its compatible to linux) windows just for the few programs you cant find in linux

Laughing I have tested it a while back for some hard drive testing or something I can't really remember, but I did like it, very stable indeed, I just didnt really know what else to do with it...

But, I dont see the point in running Windows Xp as well that just dosen't make much sense.

I think I might have been trying to ghost a hard drive with it or something.

If you are after a great operating system like OS X then you should buy something off of ebay like a refurbished laptop or used ???

especially if you need to run Adobe the only solution there would be Mac OS X

thank you very much for the replies.
Shurely I'll make a dual boot with Ubuntu and WinXp...
that way I'll be able to run Adobe soft and a few (or just one) games with windows, and also because of the LAN i have at home.

Thanks again Smile

I'm using Ubuntu (dual boot with XP as I said)
Installed Nvidia drivers correctly with automatix.
And Beryl too.
I'm using the 6.10 desktop 64bit version.
It's 3 times faster than winxp hehe...
But internet browser is slower...
