Me'Shell NdegeOcello
No one's striving to be Miles Davis.
Everybody's striving to get paid.
And, you know, I want to be like Miles Davis.
Meshell is a great self-taught neo-soul bassist born in Germany but raised in the USA
her artistic name means "Free as a Bird"
she is Jacques Johnson' daughter, jazz saxophonist
She also plays guitar, keyboards and drums
some of her influences are: Curtis Mayfield, Joni Mitchell, Prince, Parliament, Sting, Jaco, Joe Zawinul, Sly Stone, Stevie, Marcus Miller, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, EWF, Eric Clapton, John Coltrane, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, David Bowie..
Prince said about her:
Quote:
“Meshell and me are like this,” he says, holding two fingers together. “She’s really quiet and soft-spoken, but when she picks up an instrument... Musicians, when they really communicate, don’t have to talk. They just play.”
and Pat Metheny (great musician for me!!) said in 2005:
Quote:
“Somehow Meshell captures the sound of the future that reminds of everything ancient that made us who we are today. I have loved her music since she first came on the scene with “Plantation Lullabies.” But last summer, I heard her on a tour she was doing around Europe with a group of musicians playing mostly instrumental music that totally blew my mind. There were a lot of great bands touring that summer, but to me, what those guys were doing under Meshell was the hippest thing I heard all year. It reminded me a lot of Herbie’s “Mwandishi” period which has always been some of my favorite music, but with Meshell’s incredible bass playing and the totally killing drumming of Chris Dave, it was addressing all the stuff that has happened in the 30 years since “Mwandishi” as well. Ron Blake, who was featured on Meshell’s tour, has been one of the best tenors around New York for years, we all love his work in the Christian McBride Band and in everything else he does, and he and I again have always wanted to hook up. When I met Meshell recently she expressed an interest in wanting to play. I was thrilled and we are happy to be able to present our first meeting together under the guise of this series.”

Good recommendation, Marina! Meshell is one of my fav artist, best bassist in the world, her words always have a meaning... I've been to her concert last year at A38, was magnificant! She's a really passionate artist, when something is not like her expectations, her mind simply blows
One of her last year shows is available at mininova:

Oh yes! I recently got all her albums, except 2007 (I didn't even know it existed). By now, my favorites are Peace Beyond Passion and Cookie.
And some of her stuff is not something you dig after the first listen, sometimes it grows on you (or rather you grow up to it). In this sense, she is much like Miles Davis. |

"Plantation Lullabies" has got to be one of THE best debut albums of all time - I could spin this forever and not get bored of it!

Don't think so - could be wrong though.
One of my favourite Me'Shell tracks is the collaboration with Chaka Khan - "Never Miss The Water". Some of the funkiest bass playing EVER right there. If you ain't heard it, check it out as soon as you can. _________________ Take it easy...
