GENESIS / Phil Collins
Hi Jamily,
today I am in the mood to open a Genesis/Phil Collins thread.
In the 80/90s I heard a lot Phil Collins and Genesis - and I was at several Phil Collins and Genesis gigs long ago - they were mind blowing!! Amazing shows with absolutely skilled musicians.
I really love Phil Collins unique voice and his drum skills.
And Tony Banks was my keyboard "god" when I was playing the keys myself. I remember playing along to a lot of Genesis tracks in my teens.
Check this awesome (!!) live drum duet with Phil Collins and Chester Thompson:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA3rJXV4R4E
Some of my favourite Genesis tracks are:
Mama
(I love Phil's dirty laughing... sounds so evil... )
Home By The Sea
2nd Home By The Sea
(Listen to those two Parts one after another - I really like those extended versions of a song!)
Abacab
(Amazing track - when i hear such a song I ask myself why nowadays songs are so short and simple constructed... ... for me it is way more interesting to listen to such a complex creations like this one!)
Please listen with headphones - and turn it loud!
They are all available as amazing live versions on YouTube (many links - just use the search function) - but I also recommend to listen to the album versions. If you don't want to buy them, you can have a listen to the complete songs at this site as well:

(Use the search function!)
And if you are in the mood for more... listen to some earlier Phil Collins songs like:
In The Air Tonight
(Live in Knebworth 1990 - enjoy the last minutes!! What a power!!)
I don't care anymore
(Has a similar feeling like "In the air tonight" - I think it is even better!)
Oh and this one:
Take Me Home
(At the gigs I have been they played it as the last song. Fantastic way to end a show worthy!! It won't go out of your head for hours!! This is a live version (Berlin 1990) - one of the tours I have been to!)
I hope you enjoyed this little musicial journey!

Yes, Genesis ain't bad, I've got some albums from them, but mainly those from the 70s with Peter Gabriel as lead singer. _________________

I am not that familar with the real old stuff from Genesis - I do love Peter Gabriel as a Solo artist though!! Amazing musician!!
Can you recommend any album/song from the early Genesis/Peter Gabriel?
For those who love the horn section ( ) ...check this little video on youtube - Phil Collins with the Phenix Horns (Horn section of Earth Wind & Fire!):

Aaahhaaawww... I love YouTube.. I am finding more and more gems of Phil Collins there. I think I have to start searching for live dvds from Mr. Collins!!
Check this one... NOW!!
The West Side, (seriously tour, Berlin)
Again with the Phenix Horns (Don Myrick on saxophone is brilliant!!) - and an amazing drum Solo of Phil Collins himself. (It's an instrumental, btw.)
The West Side (live 82, Pasadena) <-- just another (older) version, I cannot decide which on is better...
Great stuff!

..sorry, I can't stop...
At the Seriously Tour (must have been 1998/90 I think) they had a kind of carousel on stage - at the first song it "opend" and the show started with "Hand in Hand". Great performance again! I love the interaction with the audience at the end!
But I am not sure about his purple jacket which he puts on later... ...hm...
Hand In Hand

Well, all the early stuff is quite similar, but my favourite is the album "Foxtrot". _________________

Sorry, I'm gonna have to say Phil Collins is one of my least favorite 80's musicians, kind of suprising that you like him Mouse!
But I guess if you have seen him/them live your view of thier music has to be different then mine, having never seeing them live.
Just for fun I will list my 10 favorite 80's artists. in no particular order.
1) The Smiths/Morrissey
2) Depeche mode
3) The Psychedelic furs
4) The Cure
5) Duran Duran
6) Hall & Oates
7) various Punk Rock
Social Distortion (later 80's)
9) Indeep (Last Night a DJ Saved My Life)
10) Various Reggae (Ziggy M, Pato Banton, UB40) |
