social issues and concerns
news.yahoo.com
We do not have a dedicated thread for social issues and concerns yet so here is a place for them... I read this article and could not believe that people could do this! Very disturbing |

Hey AP -
There is a topic on here called "When You Gonna Learn"..I think it is a few down. It has social, environmental, and other issues within it if you want to check it out.
I am away from home, but I'll respond to this when I get back. I love talking about topics like this and have a feeling many more will be on here soon
I also wanted to bring to everyone's attention the incident with Megan Williams who was beat and tortured....disgusting!
Read here: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=106455404&blogID=325671894
Okay, more later once I read the article! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

Oh my goodness. This story is horrible and much sympathy and prayers go out to the families.
This makes me think more about the attention and life that people seek and create for themselves online and it scares me that so many kids are turning to online communities to create or substitute for their own, real physical lives that might not be as fulfilling or real lives they don't have control over or can't alter.
I also can't believe how the family got involved in creating the fake profile and attacking a teenager..as if teenagers don't have enough to deal with from their peers.
This is a sad story seriously. I mean, I know we all have our issues, but when I was a kid all this technology and stuff wasn't available and I was able to just be a kid and had to think of things to involve myself in and do that weren't in front of a computer. Not that all cases are this way, but still...
Thanks for posting this up AP. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

That is frickin crazy....I just heard about it at lunch from the television news...
how can those idiots that created the fake profile and said those mean things NOT be liable somehow????
If there is no law against that then at least they should be charged with talking to a minor as an adult who POSED as being a minor...
that's sad for the family involved. |

What happened to Megan Williams is horrific. It hurts to read but it hurts even more so to see how she is being injured twice. She is a strong and courageous woman.
It is a concern, that now the internet is in many homes, and will be in many more, people's social networks possibly will get bigger along with other positive and negative potentials. Perhaps the internet, the social networking sites are only bringing to our attention more promptly what is already there- for good or bad. Its the mis-use. |

Horrible stories you listed there.
When it comes to the story of Megan Williams, I think that those people who did these atrocities should be incarcerated until the end of their life (I'm against death penalty) with the mention of hate crime of course. But this was not only a racist hate crime, it was also a hate crime against the person of Megan Williams, because she knew one of the persons who did this to her. _________________

Thank you for that link AP.
Hate crimes I often don't think about, but are on the rise are against the elderly and against homeless (does anyone remember the kids that were going around filming themselves beating up the homeless?).
I want to print this article out.
It is all just so senseless. It is hard to imagine where these peoples' heads are at when they think that 1. it is acceptable and humane and 2. they are going to get away with it.
As far as the social networking sites (not as it relates to hate crimes, just in general)....I don't know.... I can't help but think that creating an online life that outlives your actual life won't be helpful in the long run...I guess that is if you don't have control of it. I'm babbling...tired. NIGHT! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |
