Sting
I've liked his songs for as long as I can remember, but it wasn't until last year that I really started to collect the albums. There are hardly any Sting songs I don't like; they're pretty much all good!
One thing I like a lot about Sting's music are his clever lyrics. He seems to put a lot of thought in them, and you can often find humour in them as well. A lot of songs are about love, the most sung-about topic, but it never gets old.
Another thing I like is the world-music influences he puts in his songs, especially in the last couple of albums.
I recently also bought the "All This Time" DVD. I already loved the cd, but seeing the concert live and the documentary about the concert and the process preceding it.
Anyway, what I really wanted to do with this topic is to ask if there are any other Jamiroquai fans that also enjoy Sting's music. Speak up! |

can't say I'm a fan but I like his work, although I haven't played it in ages, and you got me thinking about taking a look at that all this time dvd.
i've got:
Ten Summoners Tales
Mercury Falling
Fileds of Gold
Union is Strength
Bring on the Night
Sting Like a Bee
and two Police albums (live 2cd and a compilation)
and I've been to a gig in 1996 in my old town Rotterdam (he had some crap pre-act that night) |

Exactly the same here! My first ever CD I have bought in my life was Nothing like the sun from Sting - that was 1987 after I had bought my first cd player - I was 14 years old.
My favourite tune on that album is Straight to my Heart
It has a 7/4 beat which is very rare and makes it so interesting! Just love it!!
I then started to buy other albums, also from Police. I have been playing in a schoolband those days and we did a few covers of Police, I remember.
Also, I had a vinyl with some really jazzy live stuff on it - I have to search for it - I wonder if I still have it...
One album I have from him (All this time) I cannot really hear without getting tears in my eyes - he was in Italy and going to record a live album at 11 September 2001, but the broadcast on the internet was cancelled after the terror attack in New York. He still did the gig, although with a changed setlist - a very sentimental and emotional concert - and you can hear it on that cd and dvd. It's very touching - great album!
Sting is an amazing musician - and also a great personality - very active and involved in politics (humans rights, environmental protection, Rainforest Foundation ect.).
And... he does look like Paul a bit, doesn't he? (Or was it the other way round?)
Mouse -> off to hear Sting! _________________ ~ I look up to Heaven, every star I see is mine.

Another great Sting song is this one:
I hung my head - from the album Mercury Falling
What kind of beat is that? ... 9/8
...
Same album:
I was brought to my senses ...again an unusual beat: 7/4 again - try to count: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ...
You can find a live version at youtube:
(amazing, how they are able to jam over that stange beat!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3hBQaFIRDE
and here another version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znSqbA3kWFo
Ahh...I should start playing guitar again, I remember playing this tune for hours years ago... (Sandra, this is something for you, I bet!! - in the album version you can hear the guitar better than in those youtube films)

FunkieJunkie... look what you have done... cannot stop posting here...
I found another cool live version of Englishmen in NewYork, with a little jazzy break...
Englishman in NewYork live - "be yourself, no matter what they say"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pChmVuYj2mQ
And here a very jazzy version of Walking on the moon
Tokyo, October 2003 - Sting with Jason Rebello on piano
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3h9aPRrQLY
Enjoy!

Great vids Meike, I should check the rest of youtube, I bet there's a lot more.
It's funny you talk about this rhythm, I've read about how he wanted to use a 4/5 rhythm on a country-like song, and he had this famous steel-string guitar player for this song, but the guy was only used to playing 4/4 rhythms, and he got totally confused by it! haha
To be honest, I hardly ever notice it when songs have unusual rhythms, and this is not a good thing, as I am a bassplayer. I really have to work on that. What's even stranger is that my brother is a professional drummer, so you'd think I'd have gotten a bit of his talent on me. Allas...
Anyway, I don't hear anyone talk about Soul Cages. Personally, I think this album is one of his bests. But I don't listen to it too often, as it can get me to feel depressed! The album was written shortly after his dad had died, and obviously, it has had a great impact on him and the album.
I hope to go to a concert of him one day. I believe he's touring Europe right now, but it's for his new album "Songs From The Labyrinth", which is an album with 16th century songs performed on the lute by Edin Karamazov and sung by Sting. I have to be honest, it's not really my cup of tea, although it beats gangstarap anytime.
But there have also been rumours about Sting meeting up for a reunion tour with the boys from The Police. I'd love to see that, eventhough that was before my time! _________________ The name's Rob, just Rob |
