Greyboy Allstars - funk, soul, jazz band
I did a search and a few people brought them up a long time ago..I dig them a lot. They are a funk, jazz and soul band out of Los Angeles. They have been together for 15 years now. Their music is just feel good...to me anyway. Just got their album, 'What Happened To Television?' and found more than half cuts that I play over..Check them out.
I suggest 'How Glad I Am' or 'V Neck Sweater' - both that you can hear on their My Space...Their instrumental track, 'Soul Dream' is pretty tight too...

FREE DOWNLOAD OF 'HOW GLAD I AM' - my favorite GA song!
The Greyboy Allstars need your help!
This coming Tuesday (6/26), KCRW is featuring a FREE download of the single, "How Glad I Am," -- featuring The Living Sisters (Inara George, Becky Stark & Eleni Mandel) -- from the new album, What Happened To Television? Even if you already have this song, please visit KCRW.com on Tuesday and download it! The amount of times the track is downloaded will directly affect how frequently KCRW spins the song!
Thanks for supporting The Greyboy Allstars!
MY REVIEW OF THE SONG FROM WWW.DEE34.BLOGSPOT.COM:
Song: "How Glad I Am" by the Greyboy Allstars, Genre: Funk, Jazz
I have my Giant Step trading crew buddy DJ Veggie to thank for this, as he put it on one of the compilations he gave to me. Upon further investigation, I realized that this group had been out for a long time. Where the hell was I? Under a rock? I love my Giant Step family of fans, but anyway....this song has this 70's type breakin' feel, as in I want to bust out the Rerun dance move when I hear it, but it also has a hint of the hippie chic type vibe to it. What is most important to notice about it is the impeccable instrumentation. The vocals take a backseat to them. I hear a bit of West Coast flavor in this track also. I know they would be amazing live, and my dad would dig them also. Listening to this is like travelling back in a the machine where jazz and funk didn't sound like pop and easy listening. Get down with the song here:

I just bought thier newest release:
What Happened to Television?
and it rocks!!!!!!
I have thier other two releases: Greyboy Live, and West Coast Boogaloo featuring Fred Wesley (from James Brown)
and I think that they are from San Francisco Deesh, and not LA as you stated, but anyway they are one of favorite groups right behind JMQ!!!
the newest album kind of reminds me of some JMQ instrumentals....
I love it! I encourage anyone who likes JMQ to check it out! |

They are actually from San Diego. When I made that post, I was just discovering them. Recently saw them live also. I didn't feel well, so I couldn't stay the whole set and the environment and people were totally different than anything I was used to. Felt kinda weird, but it was still nice...They are a great, great band.

Intermission?
Although The Greyboy Allstars have been in existence for 15 years, I was late by discovering them just last summer. The San Diego funk and jazz band filled the downstairs of World Cafe last week. Not sure if it was sold out, but it was packed. After listening to a DJ for about 45 minutes, the 5 piece band took the stage. From there, everything just rolled on. They breezed through a number of hits from their latest release, What Happened to Television? Instantly, the audience started dancing. The groove didn’t stop. The musicians consisted of the basics - drum, keyboard, guitarist, bassist, etc., but the band’s leader, Karl Denson wore many hats. In addition to assisting on various percussion, he played the flute, saxophone, and also did lead vocals. I would have just been happy watching him honestly. He has gained the respect of musicians worldwide and I hope the other guys in the band understand what a wonderful opportunity it is to play with him. They played my favorite song, “How Glad I Am”, which is actually quite cheesy and immature in the lyrics, but still so good. The song was sung by a male band member, instead of the female lead that appears on the album. That took a little getting used to and changed the vibe a bit. The songs continued to build momentum with each note. The band just kept jamming through songs only taking breaks to wish the crowd a Happy Holidays. After about 6 or so songs, Denson announced there would be an intermission! Well, it was late and I couldn’t stay longer, so I left. Did the concert make me a bigger fan? I wouldn’t say that. I would say that it helped me appreciate real musicians a bit more. The Greyboy Allstars had obvious chemistry on stage and each instrument complimented another to produce a polished and distinct funk/jazz sound. I hope the second half of the show was good as the first, if not better. I have no doubt that it was. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

that's really great that you got to see them live Deesh!
so that was in Philly then? Cool. Yes Karl Denson is really where the best of the talent is, for sure, and he has put out a couple solo albums as well I believe.
Great review of the concert thank you for sharing that.
i know when i lived in Northern California, Karl Denson played a few times but I couldnt afford it at the time. i am glad that the group is back touring though..... I will have to make a point and go see them when they are in LA!!! |

I just listened to one song Get A Job, which I rather liked. So, thanks for the tip! I'll look around and see if I can find anything with them, if I can afford it being a poor unemployed student atm.
Thanks! |
