Duffy
On Friday night featuring on Later with Jools Holland i discovered an amazing Soul/Motown voice from just down the road from me. Shocked

Her name is Duffy and i don't think im overeacting in thinking she will be the next best thing. She has a singing voice which is one in a million and has been performing soul since she can remember. She hails from the Llyn Peninsula which is in North Wales and can be likened to Dusty Springfield although in my opinion is a dead ringer for Dolly Parton with those dimples! Laughing

On Later with Jools she performs 'Warwick Avenue' and upbeat 'Mercy' which is outstanding. To watch it go to - http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/series30/episode04/

Warwick Avenue is - 16 mins 59 secs in
Mercy is - 55mins 38secs in

I have also recorded these performances along with other parts of the programme in High Quaity DVD so let me now if i should upload??

there is also an interview and an acoustic performance of her new single 'Rockferry' which is really not so far from me at all. The video to the single is on Youtube and my myspace page now. It will be released on 7" vinyl on 3rd of Dec which will followed by a tour next year.

this info can be found on her myspace - http://www.myspace.com/duffymyspace
and website - www.iamduffy.com (free download there - 'breaking my own heart')

i should be attending the gig with the Magic Numbers on 6th Dec which again is just down the road in Wrexham.

This is the trendy sound of female singers now...that vintage pop/soul type sound. Just looking at her and how you described her, I knew she was on that type of vibe. I have to give 'Rockferry' a few more listens. It doesn't grab me at all. I like 'Warwick Avenue' a lot and she's very attractive. She has a nice voice that I think comes across well on WA.

Thanks Russ for the tip.

thanks for the input Deesh.

im not that keen on Rockferry but if you watch the performance on Later with Jools on the website player and wind to 'Mercy' - see what you think of that? hints of 'Nowhere To Run'??

http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/series30/episode04/ - watch the whole show and it's about 55 mins 38 secs.

i agree, there are alot of female singers breaking through but mainly with a guitar wrapped around them. I don't know of many young female soul singers emerging in the UK and as for North Wales Shocked it's unheard of.
This is also because the younger generation don't like this type of music but im sure it's comin back like everything else. Wink

good

Yep Russ, she's a very talented singer: her track "Rockferry" is also in the list for the Future Sound of London, the Jo Good's radio program on Capital Radio

She has also recorded at the bbc studios Maida vale on 14th Nov where competition winners could be part of an intimate gig and will be broadcast soon i think Very Happy

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/musicclub/event_duffy.shtml

also there is a profile on bbc wales with a performance with Bernard Butler of Macalmont & Butler singing 'Syrup & Honey'.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/music/sites/duffy/

i will be moving heaven & earth to see this girl on 6th dec in Wrexham up the road. Wink trouble is - the Magic Numbers are headlining Sad

I agree... "Rockferry" is nothin special, but "Warwick Ave." is a pretty good song.

She's in New York on March 17th. That's a Monday, so I can't go, but I'll be looking forward to the reviews!

Saw her at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester on Fri night - 22nd Feb.

Absolutely amazing gig - only 300 people in there and masses milling around outside for tickets. Some were fetching £80 and £150 on ebay for 2!! Shocked

i bought mine for £8 last Nov as i had an inkling she might generate this much interest on the release of Mercy' and indeed she has - No.1! Very Happy

I have also bought 4 more tickets for a llandudno show nr her home town where family and friends will be there in a tiny civic hall in North Wales. Unfortunately once again they have sold out Confused

So,
Great little venue in The Northern quarter of Manchester which resembled a 70's club inside with lots of nooks and krannies or alcoves where you could slope off and have a relax or listen from a a far with no hussle or bussle. A tiny little stage at the front with a DJ pit at the side playing Northern Soul numbers accompanied by some Northern Soul Dancers Very Happy
One of which Duffy later explained was in the video to 'Mercy' Cool and was also selling some discs he had made up prior to the gig.

Duffy's band entered followed by herself and shook our hands at the front as she was amazed how close we all were. She began the short and sweet set with 'Rockferry' and i was mesmorized throughout finalling culminating with her No.1 Mercy at the end. Then following a roar from the crowd was talked into doing another album track - 'Distant Dreamer'.

'Mercy' & 'Breaking My own Heart' Videos & Pics Arrow http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HM0HD9A5

Have to say again - this girl is a star!!

She was also on Jools Holland again which ,ay explain why she left quite hurriedly at the end maybe! Laughing

but apparently Alicia Keys was ill and Duffy stepped in last min at the pre -recording which can be seen on www.bbc.co.uk/later and includes a backstage interview, the perfomance(Mercy,Interview, Rockferry & Stepping Stone) & pics.

She also did Radio 1's Live Lounge on Fri too:
