Has he lost his voice?
Simple question with simple answers. I myself believe he did. He (to quote Maxud) sounds like a broken-down alto guitar amplifier today. And it's not only coke to blame for that. |

I really do love him, but....
He did.
But then again: He's 38. There's no wonder his voice became a bit... I don't know... |

I still maintain that Jay Kay has a fabulous voice! His most recent outings (Scala, Jazz Cafe, Russia) prove it.
It is obvious that Jay's voice is not the same as it was 15 years ago but this is inevitable really.
I wouldn't say Jay has lost his voice at all. _________________ 'This is the world he wants, pray for the brave and the young...' |

Jay Kay didn't lose his voice, absolutely...
What happens to these days is that Jay's voice is overstrained, and if we stop to analize, some reasons will pop out as these:
1 - he's a heavy smoker, we know so far that smoking reduces the levels of airflow in your lungs. Thus reducing it's range of notes.
2 - Jay's voice usually sounded down in the end of some tours, I remember seeing similar circumstances at jools holland in 1997 at the end of the TWM world tour, and almost the same in the end of 1999 curiously at jools holland again where he sang 'canned heat' with a pretty strained voice, although his performance on stage and his dance moves were superb. If you watch the Live at Montreux 2003 DVD you will see the same, even more evident in 'Shoot the moon', at the very end of the AFO tour, where he relied extensively on the backing vocals for higher tones and falsetto. The same did happen on Dynamite (see live from abbey road). Even voice monsters like freddy mercury got the same problem as well.
3 - I think a 5 year cocaine addiction can also help your voice to thumb down and probably Jay's still recovering from it to this date.
Personally i think Jay's voice just need to be reworked, as he's aging, his range of tones is changing as well, but he showed he can reach the same pitch he could at EOPE in gigs like rotterdam jazz festival at 2006. Look closely at 'soul education' session.
We know so far that his voice is not the same as fourteen years ago, but with the proper training and resting, his voice can return to the top form. _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

I see your point, but I hardly believe that he will return to sing 'alright' with the voice he has in TWM era. |

i think we all cringe a little when he misses a note or we hear the raspiness nowadays, but that's because he was such a powerful and stellar singer early on. he set a high standard for himself - the songs are difficult and have a ton of melismatic phrases and crazy intervals jumping up and down the scale. he's still a very good singer, just gotta cut back on the smokes (aka quit somehow) and get his larynx checked out by a doctor. he seems to have had a very fragile voice that is constantly changing due to age and is strained by touring/lifestyle.
1992-1993, he had a deeper range and an almost froggy thing going on, but could soar to high notes at will.
space cowboy, a similar, but less froggy singing voice, and by TWM, a very good voice but singing in a higher range and more strained style, perhaps for the effect of intensity. on synk and a funk odyssey he still sounds really good and has developed as an artist, but i think between AFO and dynamite something went wrong and he realized, i gotta quit this coke/party life. i wish him luck in the recovery of his voice, i know it must be on his mind as well..how could it not be? his voice is his life. |

Yeah! that's right, lets take as example Stevie Wonder or Sting, they still sing as their golden ages!!
Compared to them, is obvious that Jay lost his voice. |

I agree with Peggy and javis. It has nothing to do about his age, but about the kind of life he decided to take part in |
