swine influenza
Hey Jamily, its been such a long time since the last time I was here... many things have happened, n as u all might well know my country is suffering from swine influenza.
I live in Mexico DF, the city with the highest rates of people infected and death... its such a weird story...
Its sooooo weird to walk on the streets n see they are all empty. Its such a freak thing to see everybody covering their mouths... we, mexicans, are optimistics. Everybody out is making jokes about influenza (for example, since mass was canceled in DF on Sunday, n today we had an earthquake some say (ironically say) that earthquake was caused cuz mass was canceled...)
Still paranoia can be smelled outside. I had to move for a couple of days outside DF since my mom had cancer few years ago n now, her inmunology system is not as strong as before. For her, getting sick can be terrible.
But I need to go back to DF tomorrow, n the most probable thing is that I will spend my birthday (which is on saturday alone)... or with friends covering their mouths! hahaha!
It makes me sad to realize all the tragedies going round in the globe. The News about the earthquake in Italy (to all the italian Jamily, I send my prayers), the economic crisis, n this sickness that is not only affecting my country, but some others already...
I really wonder what we should do... I believe in God and I am sure everything happens for a reason. Still, these days have been frustrating, fulfilled with paranoia and very very strange.
Government doesn't say much. N media is (obviously) alarming everybody. I don't really have a clue how dangerous this virus can be... I don't really have an idea if my country would be able to solve this thing. N I absolutely have NO fckg idea how much this is going to affect us...
I needed a space where to write my feelings. My frustration, my concerns and to admit that I am scared...
I honestly hope everything goes well and that this wont affect a lot of people... |

I hope everything goes well for you, and happy birthday for saturday!. Stay positive, there are lots of conspiracy theories going around at the moment but i'm not going to comment on that. Just keep your immune system strong..
Just some ideas, as an alternative measure as there isn't a pharmaceutical available that will protect people from it yet. Being a naturopath I know of some herbs that are that have antiviral properties such as; Goldenseal (very potent antiviral), St John's wort (broad spectrum antiviral), Andrographis, Calendula, Echinacea Angustifolia, Cat's claw, Rosehip and green tea. (just to name a few).
If u want more info on them u can find more here.
Herbal Info
Hopefully this will be over soon, don't be too afraid by all the media hype. |

I follow with a great interest what's happening in Mexico: its such a terrible thing and i do hope all the governments are monitoring the developments on the whole area.
Key developments according to the World Health Organisation (WHO):
Infections:1614 humans infected in Mexico (suspected or confirmed)
20 humans infected in the USA (confirmed)
17 humans infected in Spain (1 confirmed, 16 suspected)
13 humans infected in New Zealand (suspected)
6 humans infected in Canada (confirmed)
1 human infected in France (suspected)
1 human infected in Israel (suspected)
1 human infected in Brazil (suspected)
Deaths :
103 human deaths in Mexico (22 confirmed, 81 suspected)
General Information:
Swine influenza is a respiratory disease in pigs and is caused by Type A Influenza virus
Flu outbreaks in pigs are actually quite common
Swine flu viruses can infect humans, but this is not common. Recent studies show that up to 25% of swine farmers, as well as 10% of veterinarians, may have been infected with the virus during their life.
Certain strains of the virus, such as the currently famous H1N1, have the ability to infect humans who are in close contact with infected pigs.
The current outbreak in humans shows that the involved strain has the ability to spread between humans. However, the evidence suggests that this virus is less lethal than the H5N1 “Bird flu” virus
Symptoms are: fever, coughing, fatigue and generalised body ache
Infection with the virus is easily confirmed via a throat swab
There is no specific vaccine available against Swine Flu
The virus is sensitive to medications Tamiflu and Relenza
Preventative Measures:
Avoid travel to known affected areas
Avoid contact with pigs – eating well cooked pork meat is absolutely safe
Increase your general hygienic precautions, such as frequent hand washing, only using disposable handkerchiefs and avoiding crowded areas
See your family doctor if you develop a fever accompanied by flu-like symptoms _________________

Here I go with my new report...
First of all, I would like to thank you for your interest in this topic. Mainly cuz it seems to be a matter that now is affecting other countries and the only way to reduce this is by prevention.
MissyM, many thanks for your recos and ur message. Honestly, I had no clue about the properties of herbs. I will for sure start drinking green tea (which is the easiest to find I guess).
Fra, the data you posted is absolutely correct. The thing that worries the most in that only in Mexico we are having deaths. That's very very strange. Doctors say this is because these people received medical at a very late phase.
My best-friend's father works at the government and is responsible of some hospitals at DF. Yesterday I called him n what he told me is that inside the goverment many things are said. The main rumour is we do not have an idea of the measure of sickness until May 6th. That is why schools, kindergardens, universities in all the country have suspended classes until that day. Also, nightclubs and restaurants are closed.
Masks are not easy to get. At least in DF you can't buy them cuz pharmacies don't have any more...
There are many negative things around this topic. And of course, there is a matter about economic problem... Exchange rates are increasing, the BMV is reporting losses and I honestly hope this can be controled before borders are closed (and exports limited)...
The very best news about all this is that I'm no longer returning to DF for this week. So the cool thing is I'm going to spend my birthday with my family!!
I'll keep you posted in the news here. |

thanks to everyone who cares for Mexicans |

Many thanks for ur support! Pekequai, esperemos todo salga bien!
Report of today:
US has confirmed the death of 1 person affected by swine influenza (which btw, might change its name since apparently, it is not virus caused by porks according to the FAO).
Yesterday, the official numbers in Mexico reported only 7 people who died of swine influeza. The rest of the deaths are still being examined. Restaurants were closed in DF (you can only go to buy your food but not eat it in the restaurant). This obviously caused the anger of certain economic sectors.
Flights to Mexico are already being canceled...
I must say that since I am not currently in DF, I am not getting all the paranoic information but all of my friends who are there say streets are empty since it it is recommended to work from home.
If what my friend told me is true, then we have to wait until this weekend to know exactly how awful this situation can get (or not!). I truly hope it doesn't cuz some estimations are already assuming that many businesses will close since sales losses are increasing since last week. They will not be capable to pay salaries since they are not selling anything.
I really don't know what else to say... Only that I true hope that unity keeps us positive and that we can find a solution to this. |

Guys, I have just read a long and very informative article about the swine flu. If you are sick of the scare tactics of mass media, this is the right read for you, because it puts straight the facts!! It's a must read in these days!! (although it is a long read - it's important!!)
