Moses Mayes: "the older Jamiroquai" is back.
Hi there.
I feel this band has got to be given a VERY SPECIAL attention by the Jamiroquai community, particularly the fan base addicted on the earlier sounds, like EOPE and ROTSC. Believe me.
For many of us, it seemed impossible to find other acts that even touched early 90´s JMQ, in terms of sound and vibe.
Well, there is a lot of stuff similar, like 70´s jazzfunk stuff like Roy Ayers and Donald Byrd, and 90´s acts like Incognito and Count Basic, but in terms of sound and vibe, Jamiroquai was so unique, that there still is, 20 years later, a big fan base always crying "Give us the acid jazz jamiroquai" back.
I have got to admit I was part of that fan base. Well, a long time, very long time. Until I found Moses Mayes. They are simply magnificent.
So, to you, all you vintage JMQ fans, I strongly recommend to start listening this stuff, there are some tunes on youtube. Try these ones first:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PydorZHI39k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xnac9QHqPY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j4fa0ey7tw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEuhFWd8UgE&feature=PlayList&p=1E900CC37F4B60E6&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=7
Well, thay are not Jamiroquai. But some stuff is RAELLY close. And other stuff is even better.
Besides, we have got to be realistic, Jay has changed, his voice is different, his mood is far away from those sounds, and the boys are not the same .. simply that sound is not comming back.
Cheers to all |

I couldn't buy the albums in real, there's only one available at amazon, it costs nearly 26€ and it will be dispatched in between 1 and 2 months...
So I bought 3 albums at iTunes, all together for around 25€! _________________

W O W!!!
I'm just listening to these albums, and a part the first one which sounds a bit amateurish, the two other ones are little masterpieces!!!
- "Moses Mayes & the Funk Family Orchestra" 7/10
- "Needle to the Groove" 10/10
- "Second Ring" 10/10 (although I'm not entirely through it yet)
By the way Vintage73, are you a band member? _________________

I like all of the three albums, but you cannot compare it to Jamiroquai at all.
This band's style is not purely acid jazz, i felt it more like a funk-disco-ish groove, but the band is very very good indeed. But what really makes Jamiroquai unique is how wild and unpredictable their sound was back then, while i listen to the first albums, i see unexpected transitions, very well crafted bridges and that striking catchy melody structure that only the trio kay/smith/zender could craft. The sound os this band is predictable, more sirurgical, it feels like while you're listening, you can feel what comes every next note.
But as i said, those guys are very good!
cheers from brasil

Yeah, they´re damn great, they should be way more popular.
I´ve been dying to watch them live, I heard they are a kick ass live jazzfunk band. Kind of .. they enter to the stage and nobody knows them, but at the end of the show people are crying for more.
By the way, they´re not new, i red they were in this business for quite a long time, always being faithfull to the Rhodes, Minimoog, etc, type of sound.
Ophone, answering your question: No, I´m not a Moses Mayes musician, lol.
I just got addicted in their music, and I think it´s unfair this guys are virtually unknown, so I gave them some publicity. |

I´ve played them several times in my radio show, they are really great!!!
There is a web where you can download some live concerts recorded from the audicence. Amazing Jamiroquai covers.
They want to play over europe next year. Amazing band. _________________

Totally agree. The song Tell Me has been released in UK in 7" vinyl, after the song "Intrafusion" was included in the compilation "Soul Unsigned", in the first volume if I remember well. _________________

what are you trying to suggest ... lol
I am not from Moses Mayes, I just became a huge fan of them ! ... I started listening some tunes on a youtube channel and got addicted. The views of the songs were like "41", "76", so I felt this band had to be more known among funksters like us, because it was a shame they were so hiden. |

thank you
Hi, I am keyboard player and one of the founders of Moses Mayes. Someone recently pointed us to this discussion and I just wanted to say how much we appreciate your kind words. We are obviously very big Jamiroquai fans so to have other fans enjoy our music is very high praise.
As a thank you we want to offer you a free download of our entire discography. You can find all the albums in compressed form here: https://dublum.box.net/shared/97ldymchh3
We hope you enjoy them. They represent 10 years of work and growth as musicians.
FYI, this link will only be up for a few days.
