Good versions vs. bad versions
I was thinking about live versions of songs that aren't as good as others.
For example:
Bad version:
Canned Heat from Montreux 2003 (the entire A Funk Odyssey tour, perhaps).
I mean, I don't like it at all! It didn't capture the 'dance' feeling the song traditionally has, that first verse wasn't good enough, for me.
And good/different versions:
Canned Heat, Jazz Cafe and/or Canned Heat from this current tour. Even de 1999 version that had that loong instrumental part (Luna Park comes to mind).
_____
Does anyone remember Space Cowboy from A Funk Odyssey tour? That one was different and was very very cool! They didn't played it that much.
From all the renditions of that song, I think maybe the Dynamite tour version is the bad one (bad one in terms of Jamiroquai, to be perfectly clear).
_____
Revolution from Dynamite tour was good, but we needed the brass section. I think this current version is very good.
_____
Anything to add?? What do you think? |

I haven't gotten around to listening to it during this tour, but whenever they did BCD (AFO or DYN tour or whatever) I always thought a huge chunk was missing where the brass bits should have been after the hook... _________________

Yeeeah the version of canned heat at montreux 03 is boring hahaha but is strange coz I really like the version from verona 02 mixed with everybody's going to the moon and they're similar
and about space cowboy i think that aaaalll the versions are great i love the version from dynamite era and from the funk odyssey era. but there's a version from Free jazz at brazil 1997 that really makes me fly
ok here I go:
1:Bad version:
High times from Rock in rio 2008 it's awful! the bass and the guitar sounds very poor.. no energy
1:Good version:
High times from Live Scala 2007, High times from montreux 2003, and High times from travelling without moving era (you know the version with use the force).
2: Bad version:
Feels just like it should from dynamite era is so similar to the album version so i don't like it to much. Good but nothing especial
2: Good version:
Feels just like it should from Scala 2007 mixed with radio. Just cool!
Also the version from Rock in Rio 2008 is very nice.
what do you think? _________________ Got my soul education! |

I have to admit that I don't like very much the "Too Young To Die" Live Version during the 1993/1994 tours. Too much "dancing" for me...I prefer the slower and smoother version from the album. |

Use the Force from the Dynamite tour = FAIL. TWM tour version is miles better. |

The live in verona version of Canned Heat may be very different but it was an interesting alternative version, the percussion and bass during the intro are really cool. I can't say the same about the montreux version, maybe beacuse of the horrible sound mixing and messed up levels on the dvd/bluray release. But I agree with Dyego that the jazz cafe version is the best one.
we also have Soul Education from the 2002/2003 tour. I have mixed feelings with that one, it think It depends on the mood I'm in... but I prefer the one played at the North Sea Jazz festival in 2006.
The hardest one to decide for me is Use The Force. They did an amazing version during 2006/2007 shows (with the brass section). Again, it is different than the 1996/97 one, but Rob's arrangements are great. And the montreux 2003 version is FANTASTIC!
Maybe the reason is that Use The Force is one of the best Jamiroquai songs and that's why it sounds amazing every time it's played. |

Use The Force from Montreux 2003 has one big advantage: Matt's solo towards the end. |

Love Foolosophy is one of the songs I haven't heard a bad version of...
The extended solos at the end in Montreux 2003 is great (Abbey Road sessions contain a small guitar portion from Montreux)
2008's Rock In Rio is also good with it's slow intro
I honestly can't think of a time that was done poorly
I also listened to Dynamite from some concert (I can't remember) and found it terrible... It sounded nothing like Dynamite (similar to that Emergency On Planet Earth track that is just awful from Radio One Sound City Event)
The problem with Canned Heat (Montreux 2003) is that is was too much rock and not enough dance... it's like the band wanted it to sound more like Deeper Underground (a similar thing happened with another band I listened to... they changed all there songs to be heavier, then a lot of negative feedback came out, so they went back to their original style) _________________
