New Jamiroquai Songs Discussion Thread!
Hello,
Well since Meike's 'cool but still confounding, at least for me' rearrangement of Talk, I thought I would open a new thread where we can discuss the current and yet to be heard New Jamiroquai Material during their current summer fests . So far, they have pulled out 2 new songs, one aired at DEBUT with the psych-rock acid jolly of 'Rock Dust Light Star' and just last night, during warm-up before their Hard Rock Calling with the 'yet to be heard/seen off live videos' mysterious 'Goodbye To My Dancer', pretty much foreseen on the DEBUT Setlist. Now, based on the direction of RDLS, and the heresay that fans heard from bandmembers about the new album being more 'soulful', I think it will be more of a 'mixed bag', with each new song being more distinctive and separate in sound from all the other ones, you know, sort of what 'Dynamite' sounded and felt like, at least for ME. Anyway, feel free to leave your thoughts about these new songs and the impending other new songs that are sure to be unveiled at the 'damn! I wasn't that!' moments of the upcoming gigs! Cheers!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000 _________________

to me RDLS is a trip, between powerful lyrics and psichodelic sound
is surprising to see how the band takes a new move, and to me the sound reminds half dynamte sound, half ol' school sound.
i wanna listen''goodbye my dancer'' to see how is
well, all we wanna know _________________ Only a fool can walk away from me this time

im thinking it's along the same lines as 'Runaway' & 'Radio' which is what Paul Turner was talking about in 2008 after one of the gigs. The intro is VERY similar to 'Runaway' _________________

Thanks Brent for this topic, I had the same idea yesterday but you were faster!
Someone was asking, if the new song has something to do with what we had been listening after the Ahaus gig two years ago ( ...wow.... 2 years ago already???!!!)... in the Mercedes Benz with Jay. He showed some of us pure demo versions of 3 songs... but they were different. I remember when I was at the Audi promotion gig later, I was speaking with Matt and he told me that Jay had changed those demos a lot since then. Who knows if those songs will appear on the album at all...?!
Well, about the new song "Rock Dust Light Star"... first time I was listening, I liked it... second time, I thought it's a bit boring... third time, it got better again... and now I like it! It's definitely a song which has to grow on you, especially if you have expected something different to hear.
I don't know exactly why, but it is somehow a mixture of a U2 song and a Jamiroquai song, you know what I mean?
I like the beginning and the end... the refrain is great, and I like the way Jay is singing in the chorus.
I don't really understand the lyrics... what is the song about?
The question is, if we can judge the new album by listening to just one song... from which we only have low quality live recordings even.
I think, as a teaser for a live gig it is a good song. But I bet there will be still some big surprises on the new album. I don't believe that we can say from that one song, how the whole album will sound, because the album will surely be a mixture of different aspect. We know one of them now. I am still curious how this little piece of puzzle will fit into the rest.

Soulful
I had posted this already under the general "warm-up gig", but I guess this is the better place.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming back to the discussion for the weeks to come, whether
"RDLS" is a good tune or not, I think its all based on everybody's
expectations. After the Debut Gig I heard that Paul mentioned the album to be soulful (Russ, pls confirm )
Since the Jazz Cafe Gig ("back to the old days !"), latest since the Ahaus Gig where a few lucky ones could listen to raw material after the show, crystalballs where high in demand.
RDLS needs to grow on you. It does not have the immediate kick as most of us might be used to from past releases. It certainly does not sound like "old days", besides some slight ressemblance of one or the other known tune. Again, its all based on expectation, time passed since Dynamite, hype and wishful thinking. I for one will not be dissappointed by the "latest offering" from a band and its various influences, that has surprised me over and over again during the past 17 !! years. Let's all wait until october
p.s. I have another footage from RDLS @ Debut. Will upload tomorrow. |

It is a bit of a confounding new song that Jamiroquai has given us to 'discussion disconstruct' to some meaning, isn't it ? Well, first off, let's look at the lyrics:
ROCK DUST LIGHT STAR LYRICS:
Rock Dust Light Star
Baby, Rock Dust Light Star
And it's coming at you baby yeah
Coming at you baby
I'm a man on the moon
I hope I don't come back too soon
Am I the only one to see the light
No use in getting down
Upon your knees tonight
So don't feel love
Because I got no faith
I've seen those twisted lies
Thrown back into my face
I prayed the crazy clutches
of the human race
Must be alone
How could it be
Your gift to me
a sound all up in the auxiliary
There's nothing about your war
You can call it what you like
I know where I'm from
And it's cold and dark
Cuz all the sinners
Are just seeds without the sparks
I'm having trouble
Telling them apart
Oh yeah
Coming at you,
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby,
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby
What you're made of
What you are
They can't see
Those stars for you and me
Waiting like silent candles in the night
Atomic nature
You can never fight
Can never fight
I never failed
I ever prayed
I don't have to join in
With the other slaves
I'm not the only one
Who feels betrayed
Oh yeah
Baby my life ain't about it
I'm going against the grain
I won't be born again
Salvation's coming from on high
Coming at you baby
Through the sky
From on high yeah
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby,
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star,
Coming at you baby,
What you're made of
What you are
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star,
Coming at you baby,
What you're made of
What you are
Rock Dust Light Star
Rock Dust Light Star
I'm square peg
In a round hole
Maybe there's no place left for my wounded soul
Maybe the King of Kings
Finally lost control of that
Coming at you baby
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby,
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star,
Coming at you baby,
What you're made of
What you are
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star,
Coming at you baby,
What you're made of
What you are
Salvation's coming
Salvation's coming
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby,
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star,
Coming at you baby,
What you're made of
What you are
Rock Dust Light Star
Coming at you baby
36,000 miles away
Rock Dust Light Star,
Coming at you baby,
What you're made of
What you are
Well, the primary impressions I get, based off the lyrics, is that JK is pretending, yet again, to be a someone, preferably a male character, either as some 'moonlit deity' OR 'moonman' . Whom has attracted an lady, an earthbound one, whom met him, in either a spiritual/emotional/physical way, whom warns the lady not to completely believe in/love in/become attacted with him for he is a 'flawed being' and not to completely 'give up on love', for some time soon he will come and lift her up/love her unexpectedly and so forth. To be honest, I originally thought it was a song about some 'horny comet' flying aimlessly through space trying to find a 'heavenly space body' to fly into....must not share ALL my fantasies...HEHE! There are my thoughts, cheers!
Sincerely,

i got the impression he is singing a bit about being disappointed about the human race . when i hear the rock dust light star chorus i see a big star flying in direction earth who is gonna destroy us all...
salvation coming from on high...the rock dust light star?
only when we are all dead we are all save
this is maybe totally misunderstood and mainly coming from my fantasy ..
actually reading my text now ..that would be a bit too dark for jamiroquai haha _________________ "Here it is...there is no way to make it better " |

As i blow the spiderwebs off my fingers (and my avatar), i can say that rock dust light star got into my system quite fast. It started very slow, but, little by little began kidnapping my brain cells, and all of the sudden i could't stop listening to it. It has a mellow addictive felling. I really like it!! and i like it more as i listen to it more. Did you feell the same?
Really looking fowar to listening that mysterious Goodbye To My Dancer' _________________ Sounds Kind Of Funky!!

@George - Paul did say it was soulful and has on many occasions as far back as the 2008 gigs. _________________

I get this same sort of feeling. For me there are some dark, almost fatalistic things going on with the words in these lyrics. On the surface it seems to be another one of those "where do I fit in / no-one understands me" kind of songs, but then the undercurrent has these quasi-apocalyptic themes as Sandra has mentioned. You can throw a bit of Carl Sagan in there too... "we ourselves are made of startdust..." etc, etc.
There's also that fascination we know Jay has with all things Mayan/Aztec. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the Mayan calendar "run out" around 2012 or something like that...
Just a thought.
Javis, I'm pretty sure the title of the song means exactly what it is. A refernce in some way to the building blocks of the universe. _________________
