Starchild Appreciation Thread
Since I’m an American fan waiting for news of a possible official US release of RDLS – I wanted to spread some positive energy in the online Jamiroquai fan universe. Hence this thread in appreciation for Starchild – a track so well liked San Franciscan fans demanded it was played in place of Dynamite.
The reference to a Superman coming is my favorite part of the song. |

For me, it's one of my favourite JMQ-songs That's why I can never understand why people always talk so negative about the album Dynamite. Starchild is one of the most tight and funkiest tunes made by JMQ. |

I believe this thread is for American (U.S.) fans uniting! And spreading positive energy. Because we haven't heard anything outside of the forums.
The radio needs to get hold of the songs and play them.
Funny, I do remember TWM songs playing all over the U.S. radio in fall of 1996, while waiting for the album's U.S. release in January of 1997.
Starchild is a great song. Great funky bass.
I see it as a reference to Jesus! A Superman coming to save the world.
I also love the song Dynamite. Awesome song. |

This thread isn’t exclusive to US fans. I think everyone is somewhat disillusioned with JMQ right now for their own reasons and aren’t completely happy with the state of things nor completely okay with the released album.
Since J is more spiritual than religious I think it’s about Superman in the comics but not literally. |

Starchild has a great groove, indeed- I love it! One of my favorites from the Dynamite album (which I also like more than most people I read on here, it seems). Is there clavinet in that song, or is it just the way the bass sounds? Either way, it doesn't matter, but I dig it a lot. _________________ "Nikki Giovanni kicks Maya Angelou's ass."

Starchild is a brilliant song, but the instrumental version is longer with that funky ending! I love it! AMAZING one! _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Yeeaa my favourite from Dynamite!
For me, this song have a spiritual message xD.
For me the "superman" refers to ourselves. I think that the human being have powerfull energies inside, but we don't know how to take that power out to help us and our beatiful planet... I mean some people don't know how to do it (and some people don't want let you to use that power), but there's a lot of people spreading joy and love around the world and that kind of people make the difference!
I think that the will, love and faith are powerfull energies, and when we use them, then we became supermans or superwomans xD
aa oo well and the bass line, the keyboards, the guitar, the back singers, the drums the lyircs oooo just a fantastic funky groovy song!
Nice time to express myself!

So, we all have different perspectives -we live in different parts of the world and practice different religions. And it's great to see the different interpretations of JMQ's songs!
I think Starchild is a criticism for Jesus, who came once to "save souls" and was to return again. But the people aren't living anymore to be saved, but are becoming more evil "bad seeds". Part of the real world.
I don't think he's waiting for Jesus, but maybe teaching us to change and give. But I don't know! These thoughts could never be complete! |

I think the song is cynical, just like rock dust light star. Jay isn't realy waiting for a starchild (Jesus, superman, whatever). He is being cynical towards people who do actually believe a miracle will fall out of the sky and save the planet (fundamentalistic religion). |

Dynamite is an incredible album. No matter what anybody says. Good singing, melodies, funky bass etc.. It is a tad too slick but I don't care. And Starchild is oe of the best tracks on the album along with Time Won't Wait, Don't Give Hate a Chance and really all other tracks. It's easier to list me least favorites which are Electric Mistress, Love Blind and Dynamite. _________________ www.jahcoustic.com |

Def. my fave from Dynamite too. Sick, sick, funky tune.
I originally thought the song was about some kind of messiah... and I still do by and large.
However, this is an interesting interpretation too... Like many of JMQ's songs, you listen to it and wonder: Who is he talking about? I love how the songs are open to interpretation in that way.
It's a lot like Space Cowboy. Is he talking about a specific person? God? Jesus Christ? The antichrist? Drugs? Cosmic energy? And then you begin to internalize the lyrics and realize that there is a Space Cowboy/Starchild/etc. inside each and every one of us if we choose to live that way. _________________ ~~~"To perchance upon this circumstance is something of a miracle so spiritual, it's verging on the physical."~~~ |

Yes you're right DTNY, thats great about jamiroquai, you can hear different songs and start to imagine and get deep into the meaning of the lyrics and then have differents answers... at the end of the day, when you hear, sing, and dance the song with your friends or all alone, you give the meaning that you decide
I think about Starchild, but also about MorningG, SpaceC, Alright, TravellingWM, BlueS, SoulE and Canabliss... and so many more. What do you think? _________________ Got my soul education! |
