Reviews: Nice 2011 & Barcelona 2011
Hi all,
This summer I visited two Jamiroquai gigs in Nice (Nikaia) and Barcelona (Poble Espanyol). Both times I managed to reach front row. Both times I was in time, but thanks to my Spanish fellow fans I managed to reach front row in Barcelona, because I had to pick up my ticket first and I had to leave the queue for that.
Immediately when the gig in Nice started, my feeling was not good. The sound was way too loud, I couldn't hear the various instruments, the high parts were way too loud! After three (!) songs I decided to leave front row, first time in my life. I remembered Meike did the same and I couldn't imagine it, but now I know! Even in the back, the sound wasn't good at all (maybe it was due to the venue and the bad acoustic..). I went to the toilet, saw people smoke outside, one girl was sleeping during Deeper (!), one guy fainted, and finally I found a place where the sound was acceptable: on the very left side. Overall: this gig was a huge disappointment, hopefully Barcelona would be better and it was!
The venue in Barcelona was very nice and two Belgian fans joined me front row, what was nice after the cancellation of Evy and Peggy. The sound was better than in Nice, tighter and warmer, but in High Times the higher parts seemed to be too loud again. The rest of the gig was amazing. Jay in a good mood, but more important: the audience was great and went crazy. The bandmembers were looking at the front row all the time, which was nice. Setlist in Barcelona was the same as in Nice, which made it easy for me to compare. It was like day and night. Not the performance, just the soundquality.
Highlight: Love Foolosophy (new arrangements again!), All Good In The Hood, Hey Floyd and Travelling Without Moving (flute). So glad the brass section is back!!
Thanks to all the other fans I met,
Jeroen. |

there you see how IMPORTANT the sound is..and how much influence it can have...I never believed it could have such an impact...but being in studios with pro-musicians and at a lot of live venues seeing how they work i just got a deep respect of soundguys! ...some halls are tough! _________________ "Here it is...there is no way to make it better " |

Thanks for your reviews Jeroen!
And yes, I know that feeling! I had the same in Berlin, as you know. It's awful when you are standing there, seeing the guys do their best but you just can't hear it propperly!
Glad the second gig made it all up for you!

I was in Nice too, but actually had a great time! I also was on the left side, and for me the sound was ok (not great, but ok).
Apart from the sound the guys did an amazing job! Especially Rob blew me away. He was fantastic! And people sleeping and smoking outside? I think those are the ones with the problem, not the band or the rest of the audience who were into it:)
I saw them three times this year, and the evolution since last summer (2010) really is tremendous. They have grown so much in the songs. |

I posted this in the Spain thread, but this is a very appropriate place to post this:
Hi Jamily! I have finally had some time to pause, ponder, reflect, and unpack, and I wish to weigh in on the concerts, since I had the opportunity to see them in both Nice and Barcelona this year during a European vacation/holiday.
Although the circumstances around each concert were very different, I can combine them into one, becuase the concerts were identical (to my slight disappointment.) From the (great) house music playing before the set (following a mediocre opening act which consisted of some kind of wack-ass JK/Bruno Mars/Perry Farrell/rastafarian wannabe, along with a really wonderful DJ who deserved better) to the set itself, to the WKR encore... right down to Beck's "Loser" (?) being played immediately afterwards, clearing out the place fairly quickly.
All in all, the concerts were spectacular. In light of recent news about JK possible health issues, he was noticeably low-key during both shows. He wore a loose poncho and matador-style hat - and he pranced around and grooved out, but it was clear he was taking it easy. Voice sounded great, awesome arrangements, tight playing.
This was my first 2 shows ever, but of course I have seen many YT vids. During this particular leg of the tour, you could really get a sense of them as a BAND, as a collective unit. Perhaps this was due to Jay's mellower persona.
In any case, I loved the music, the biggest highlight of which was "Love Foolosophy", which was about 13 minutes long and EPIC. It began as a heartfelt slow song, accellerated into the bouncy version we all know and love, and climaxed in a salsified coda. I cried, I laughed, I danced, I danced some more.
Comparing the Palais Nikia to Poble Espanol, the venues were like night and day, the fabulously regal oudoor forum of the latter being "Light Years" better. The energy was palpable and contagious. To dance and move about freely under the stars whilst seeing Jamiroquai live was unforgettable.
The only thing missing? Space Cowboy. I was DYING to hear that and crushed that they did not do that signature song (not to mention MY signature song!) That, and EOPE (in light of all of the recent planetary crises) would've propelled these shows into the stratosphere and would've been great opportunities for the band to make a powerful, transcendent STATEMENT. As it was, it felt like it was very 'business as usual'. (Somewhat understandable, since it has been a grueling tour.)
All things considering, I was thrilled to have seen them, not once but twice, and I eagerly await the day when they can really let their hair down and "jam". Until then, there's always YT. _________________ ~~~"To perchance upon this circumstance is something of a miracle so spiritual, it's verging on the physical."~~~ |
