You all know I'm pretty old school, but...
...I really dig A Funk Odyssey!
I even prefer it to Travelling without moving! _________________

Really ?
I remember that i felt almost a little depressed after the first listening !
It's a good and a dark album but I prefer the original JK Version ( 2001 a funk odyssey heard on youtube) than the Sony (and edited) version.(check the editing of half of the tracks)
I always felt that the three acoustic tracks might be placed as a suite like the first three tracks : the galactical atmosphere, is for me broken by corner of the earth.
Too bad this using of synthetic drums too !
Do it like we used to do and Everybody's going to the moon. must be on the regular version
What are you favourites tracks on it ? _________________ "People find it's hard to be strong, cos' they don't know where they're coming from"

I'm actually starting to appreciate it more as the years go by. The mixture of very different genres is very well achieved through the album. |

I wish "A Funk Odyssey"/"Cannabliss" had been recorded and made AFO, other than that, it was a grand album in my book, a further expansion into dance music vein of Jamiroquai. Cheers!
Sincerely,

11 years agon on a french magazine, Toby said that they recorded a long track called a Funk Odyssey but they finally don't put this on the sony regular album. Maybe, one day when Sony decides for a deluxe reissue... _________________ "People find it's hard to be strong, cos' they don't know where they're coming from" |

I have to politely disagree. AFO is an incredible album, but it isn't better than TWM.
If it weren't for TWM, Jamiroquai would have never made it in the United States.
AFO is a great album. But TWM was my first ever jam album. I assumed it was their debut for many years. _________________

No disrespect, but why is it so important to 'make it' in the United States? |

Good question indeed!
And to answer John:
A very commercial choice: Love Foolosophy _________________

And from the heart ?
My favourite track is Main Vein. AFO will be growing with years like wine.
And Dynamite don't ? In spite of Seven Days, Starchild Talullah, Dynamite and the marvellous Time Won't Wait ? _________________ "People find it's hard to be strong, cos' they don't know where they're coming from" |

Hello again,
In regards to the current discussion about TWOM, I do remember back during that era JK did do an interview remarking that he wanted Jamiroquai to 'break the US'. But it was a passing remark, which came to fruition with the brilliance of their Jonathan glazer directed VI music video. But really, the funniest thing is the tide change that has come prevailing on quite literally the average music fans when a band, after meeting commercial/music reviewer success, receive a 'backlash', recently fueled and inflamed by the advent of 'social media' and the internet, cause either 1 of 2 'expectations' aren't met to the said music fan's tastes (I.E. Quality of the new music that comes from that artists after criticla success OR the excuse to fan to alleviate self's boredom by 'flaming/trolling' at the expense of the said artist). But so many bands in the past, other than just Jamiroquai, have had their careers summed up by either 'one hit wonder' or 'their new stuff isn't as good as their original stuff' in America. But once that misconception can be snuffed, by itself, I still believe TWOM was the perfect storm of an great album that could by itself had made Jamiroquai as big or as bigger iwithout all the attached, expected 'pomp & circumstance'. Cheers!
Sincerely,

Well I speak American.
I'm thinking he's not saying cuz they wouldn't have made it in the US, but rather he wouldn't have been exposed to them. Like me. And your first has sentimental meaning.
Am I putting words in your mouth Smellbob (or Doritoes?!)
But as for albums, I think I listen to 'A Funk Odyssey' more than TWM today.
And I would love to hear the tune "A Funk Odyssey". Why didn't they release that?
My disc with "Love Foolosphy" kinda warbles. Not sure about the quality. |

I remember in 97 when I first went to university being in a conversation with dread locked kid kicking a hackey sack about how TWM was the end of Jamiroquai. There was a lot of head shaking. But then, and from there, we had to drive over 2 hours to get to the closest record store so maybe he was rightly passionate about it. Obviously it was not the end though like this is the conversation topic that doesn't end. But it is good that is does not end, it shows people care, relevance... It should be taken as love not as haterization. When I like and love a book, I talk about it, just like I want to do with music. And there is no author that I love 100% of what that person writes but I still love discussing the artistic features of what they do. Liking everything all the time is unrealistic and could drive a person crazy. As far as "making it in the states" with what smellbob has said it should be taken in context. In 96' yeah, the US had a lot of people you wanted to sell to. There were other places still up and coming and not ready to be tapped as a market. Of course that has all changed now it is global and internet has been a big leveler. Still a big market in the US of course though now. It is just that globally we are all in an unprecedented economic situation and it is probably good to be more on the frugal side with things like touring and etc. as it is not about to change any time soon. Speaking of cannabliss and etc I really like shoot the moon but? wish that would of made in on an album. As for Dynamite, well people will be referencing "the dance" for a while yet, it broke a world record with the largest dance class... I have heard it played quite a few times, the latest was at Thyme maternity? kind of funny though to try on mat clothes with. But also it got a bit of airplay on a tri state area radio station where I am from and also the university radio when I was in school. Mainly people that I overheard talking about it seemed confused about the video for FJLIS. Murky lyrics aside its a great album. I bought a hard copy of it and played it multiple times just like the other ones prior to it. |
