Jamiroquai analysis
The reasons I think jay kay is not funky anymore:
1- He got older (not really an excuse, but a lot of people say it)
2- He got stuck in the trap of trying to be "smart" or finding solutions to his "saving the world" trip like his latest RDLS song. He stresses too much on trying to write good lyrics when simple lyrics are good enough like "Dont stop the feeling" performed live at ebisu. Its not his job to save the earth, he can get us aware of the problem and at the same time spread the good times...
3- The band is not his job, it's his life. When he feels blue you've got a blue album like RDSL. If it was a job he could still get stuart zender and tobi and others and make funky music. But he was "hurt" by stuart zender and made this weird king for a day song. When i listened to the song i thought it was about his girl friend wanting to get married and him running away from marriage.
4- He is an addict, and changes his mind all the time, he's got to run away from reality(his desire to make it kept him on track for a bit). That's why every album after return of the space cowboy is different. His got to find a new trip every once in a while to keep himself busy.
I mean his rebellious attitude gave us the first 3 great albums. But his rebellious attitude also made him change his style.
He used to get lost in the songs. Now he is just repeating the lyrics while singing. A singing parrot(still great but not as great as it was)
Finally thanks for reading, I am obsessed with jay kay and jamiroquai. I realize that i may have said really wrong stuff but I had to say it. I need to stop obsessing about jamiroquai and move along.
I like his new songs... |

I can plainly answer your analysis relaying your 4 statements.
1 - Ask the Rolling Stones, U2, Stevie Wonder if they got worse over the years.
2 - Despite Jay's natural embracing nature, RDLS has absolutely nothing to do about world salvage, it's barely random. Jay's songwritting process is merely based on 'melody first, lyrics later' as he stated himself some years ago. As for Don't Stop The Feeling, it's a Roy Ayers song wich Jay's is a fan himself.
3 - You need to understand that the true emphasis on Jamiroquai it's Jay himself, since the main idea is his, the name and the cause. Jamiroquai is a band wich work slightly different from what we're used to see, members come and go like any other band, but in Jamiroquai, it's much more related to an idealistic point of view than on contractual or finnantial obligation what we mostly see in other bands, and this happens exactly because of how Jay manages it. Stuart, Fyffe, Van Gelder left more or less because of that, mostly because of disagreements about the bands direction, of course, feelings would get hurt sometimes, but where on earth it does not?
4 - As far as I know, Jay's addiction was controlled years ago. It's a very good thing that an artist like Jay, is capable of changing his mind, it directly helps the creative input of his. As for the albums, exactly because how Jay is able to change his mind, every Jamiroquai album is a very different one from another, this is also something we are not used to see very often with high profile artists in music today. If you get to listen every album full length you will surely notice that there's an evolutionary curve there, and that the curve is pretty obvious, some may like it and some may not like it but that's emphasized by Jay's mind and that's how he leads the band.
I think Jay had a rebellious attitude wich is long gone, that attitude worked back then in the early 90's when it once fitted, but the times are different now, we are wrong to say that Jay's rebellious attitude also gave us different styles, he just moved on, as everybody else does.
And dude, stop drinking and posting late night, it does not any good _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Hey Iran, how are you doing?
are you going to see Jamiroquai in Brazil? I hope so!
Hmmmm. well what are you trying to say? Try to see the Perspective.
@donkeykong
Did you always expect Jamiroquai to "Be the Funk?"
Did they say "we promise to only play funk forever?"
And what is considered funky? the dude himself or the music genre?
I mean in music funk can range from P-Funk, The Brand New Heavies to Grand Funk Railroad!
Or did some of Jamiroquai's albums just happen to become a little more Disco, Techno and Rock?
1) everybody is getting older
2) Who's going to save the world? One artist can only influence so much of the world's politics and humanitarian stance.
Who says he's struggling to write lyrics?
Are you saying they're bad? or should simply be more simple?
Nicki Minaj isn't struggling to write lyrics and hers are pretty simple.
3)
| Quote: |
| The band is not his job, it's his life |
? Who says? We all have a life. and a job.
I'm sure Jay has a life outside the band!! i.e. cars, bars, & movie stars...
(sorry that was a Hall & Oates quote)
His job is a performer of music, w/the band.
Was RDLS Blue? I thought it was well balanced, and possibly therapeutic.
And it's obvious the artist writing the song is going to write from his/her perspective!
I don't know about personal stuff.
4) Addict to what? Drugs? Alcohol? Coffee? Chocolate? Love? Life? Success?
We're all addicts in some way. Rebellious attitude?
Your description just sounds like an artist who doesn't have to work a 9-5 job.
I think they should Do what they Want, but Be what You Are. |

Hey Honey, long time no see, i'm fine, unfortunately i'm unable to see the band due a logistic problem, there's too much traffic jam where I was supposed to see them, sad thing. =/
I replied donkey kong sparsely because I also had a hard time trying to define a perspective on his post that's pretty much the story =P _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Well, i am disappointed by the direction of the band.
Nevertheless i was pretty much addicted to his old material
now i got unhooked so i don't care anymore, i just wanted to write things down so i could really get unhooked .
I dont know why he could not have stayed with the great sound from the beginning. Well whatever i cant change this.
Maybe when i get older ill understand |

Well the rolling stones were always rock and roll
britney spears was always poppy
Well i dont care if an artist changes but why change when you got such a good and unique sound. |

Because the music, the band, the musicians need to evolve as artists. Otherwise you get the same record, and the same sound everytime. Look at Brand New Heavies or Incognito. Great bands, they sound awesome, but the albums are practically the same.
I don't want Jamiroquai to be stuck with the acid jazz movement of the early 90's, that sh*t is gone now. The band wouldn't be this massive without all the different directions the music took. I think it speaks greatly about a band when they can tackle all different music genres without losing their unique touch. I think Jamiroquai achieved that. And the rotating members, whether we like it or not, helped a lot in that aspect.
I'm very happy with the current line up. I think every member is doing an excellent job, and the live concerts are the proof of that.
They should be able to translate that energy when they play live, to the studio albums. That, I can agree. I think the records gets stronger when they let the music flow and just jam. |

@Donkeykong
that's such a limited perspective. I'm sure the Rolling Stones and Britney could be divided in genres; Rock, pop, dance...

But this is a great quote

Exactly!
And yes the band lineup is awesome! And props to the backup girls too! |

You're so wrong in so many levels that I don't know where to begin to answer.
The main problem you have, is that you state opinions and theories as 'facts'. "The band is not his job, it's his life" (?). "He is an addict, and changes his mind all the time, he's got to run away from reality" (?).
You're trying so hard to find an excuse and arguments to why you don't like the later stuff that you just create your own little world of answers.
It's a band, they're all different musicians; Toby, Stu, they all have different projects, they moved along. People should move along on that fact too. They're people like us, and we can't expect them to play what we want to hear. It's all so subjective that is a little weird even writing about it.
Some people are just stuck in the past. Just let it go already....!
Just enjoy what they play, don't think about it too much, just enjoy. And if you don't like it, you have literally thousands and thousands of different artists and records to fulfill your musical needs. |
