Hey Sandra, I knew you were great and the positive result of the "audition" is the best part It means what we all discovered, you rock!
Yeah money is always a problem and when you wanna do something just "for yourself" it's always worse. I'm really sorry but I hope you could find a nice place to move and forget this big cash...It's your top priority I hope you could make it real _________________ I once had a 10 years of Travelling Without Moving celebrations banner here... |

education unfortunately costs money. why not wait two years and try to save as much money as possible? |

Sandra,
First of all, I think its wonderful you want to seek a higher formal education whether it be in guitar or anything else. Trying to go back after you've been out awhile is tough.
Many of us are familiar with going to school, paying rent, and just trying to survive. It is very tough. I am not sure who you live with now, but in my personal opinion - if it isn't that bad of a situation and you aren't paying loads of money, stay put until you finish school. It is great having your own place - I love it (Bear - I have decided to not move ). Can you work it out like get a place with a friend that isn't too expensive?
Next, are there scholarships or grants that you can apply for that will help you with education costs? I like Bear's suggestion of saving up money. The only think with that is how high the price will be once you wait 2 years Trying to get an education with no money is very common here, so people get creative with how to do it. Is there anything like a work/study where you work in a music shop part-time and in exchange they help pay for your schooling? We have that here. Can you get a part-time job for a few hours at night or one day on a weekend also to help?
It'll all work out for sure, just don't let the money aspect stop you in any route you decide to take. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

good! now move over here!
sandra, as this is a musical education and i know that you have been taking lessons for quite some time, is there a chance for you to make money of it, like performing for money (weddings, garden parties, shop openings, etc) and use this money for your education? |

first of all..thanks so much deesh , cosmicbear and rinaldo!
so lovely u all think of solutions of this all...
let me explain why it is all a bit weird.
first of all moving to my own place has first priority. i want to start a new chapter in my life..
if i would know this university thing is 100% what i want and something i can take advantage later i would not think about it one second, take the money i have and go for it.
i don´t know how to express it that it doesn´t sound weird. but i just don´t want to worry about every euro i pay somewhere (concerts, cafe, eating..). my aunt and mother would help me if i asked them...in fact they already offered it.but i cannot take money if i have it and just don´t want all to take it..does that make sense???
i could afford it but for the
there are things in my life i was missing up to now..meeting people , seeing some guitar concerts..maybe staying in another country for few days etc etc...
at university i would have one hour lesson each week and 2 or 3 weekends with theoretical stuff . ( now i have about 2hours)
and therefor that amount of money? hmmmmm
guitar is an important part of my life , but not everything...
i will go to university next week again and ask if there are any supports.if not..hmmm
disappointing post huh? _________________ "Here it is...there is no way to make it better " |

Sandra, if i have learnd something from my situation right now, than it's:
'the most important person in your life is you' I don't know but i'm repeating this all the time !
So, think about what YOU want in your life. And go for it !
And that doesn't mean that you have to be egoistic all the time... _________________ www.thisispeggy.com

Something else, just thinking... Who is single, in love, living with a partner, married, with children on this forum ? We know from some of you, would be kind of nice to see it in numbers i guess.
Did someone already did a poll for that ? _________________ www.thisispeggy.com

Sandra,
Take your time and think it through. Know that every decision you make isn't your last. It'll work out, just be creative with how you approach it all. Prioritize according to what you want vs. what is cost effecient. Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice if you need it.
Don't feel rushed. Like you have to do it all at one time. But don't let a month go by that you aren't working towards something you want. That way you can atleast feel you are making progress.

hey hey Im joining in (I don't know if this is good or bad)
I said a few things to someone at work( at a new job) who has been greeting me with "hola Henjifer Last name here" insteasd of calling me by my first name.....Jennyfer correctly like everyonce else does...
... I took it offisively as though he were trying to belittle my culture and my parents since they named me Jennyfer( it has a different spelling but it is clearly jennifer jenifer whatever). I think mabye its fine outside of a work settign ...but in one ...I just don't get it? clarification please!!!

Hello Ivy
I have had problems with my last name ever since I was born. I know how you feel when someone tries to belittle you by joking about your name; they obviously get their kicks out of it in some way, but they need to know where to draw the line; and you can help them
In a social setting it may be more acceptable, but you need to let this person know of your boundaries and let them know how far they can go. If they do this a next time, perhaps tell them something along the lines of "I would prefer it if you would call me ........ which is in fact the correct pronounciation". If that doesn't work and it still bothers you, then next time ignore them when they call you by an incorrect name
It's unncecessary in this day and age to be so disrespectful of each other's names as life has become so diverse. How old is this person? 10?
I don't think you were wrong to fight back, you have every right to protect your roots Go girl! |

thanks jamiroquanna , I had some funny reactions after I said what I said lol..my supervisor was basically watching on the other side of the glass in astonishment it just not my nature..
. but its ok and I had of course someone close to me that also works there, tell me that I overreacted..maybe i guess.
so i decied I don't want to worry over something so common and plain childish ..I have already put those thoughts aside..so its not a prob for me.
I'm not confrontational..but he asked for my opinion at that very moment and i just reponded with my thoughts.
aaah that felt so good getting it outta my sytem on to the thread ... thanks for reading! |

Thank you Anna for the encouragement on Capitol Hill (referring to the AIDS thread). Love you
I am home exhausted and it was wonderful. I got to lobby to Senate and House members about Global Poverty, HIV/AIDS, and Global Education. My bit was obviously the HIV/AIDS. I had to discuss eliminating the abstinence until marriage component and adding a 'abstince along with comprehensive prevention' component - to an Act/Proposed Bill that is currently circulating in the government.
In addition, I attended workshops based around making women more powerful in developing countries. Giving them tools, education and such to survive and for their families to survive.
It was a thrill meeting so many other people that were on my same page and I really wasn't intimidated by the government or their big fancy offices on Capitol Hill. I was more concerned about making sure I represented myself, CARE and most of all - women around the world without a voice.
What was also interesting is I was one of the only type of me there really...young, black woman who knew or was into the hip-hop culture. I used that to my advantage to stand out and be listened to.
I walked away with so much and my emotions are running kind of high right now. I will blog it all with pictures and such on My Space later next week when I get caught up on life.
But I established connections that will lead to building a relationship with some of those officials that I plan on continuing. I plan on being in DC atleast 2 times a year to continue this fight and also plan on meeting with the officials here in Philly. As a registered voter, I have the right to meet with them face to face and ask them what they are doing about global issues as well as domestic.
I had a little trouble with one official who was dumb as rocks and very, very conservative, but I stood my ground in a respectable manner. I had to correct him about something major and he gave me this ugly look, but whatever.
I must get up and go to my job now...and it's taking everything in me to go...everything.
Those two days were the catalyst I needed to change many things in my life, and for that I feel blessed. I must get caught back up on everything. My head is running a mile a minute.
Have a great weekend everyone!
