Man jailed after Gumball deaths
The rally was called off after the incident
A Cheshire millionaire has been jailed in Macedonia after a crash during an international car rally which left two pensioners dead.
Nicholas Morley, 30, from Bowden, and co-driver Matthew McConville, were taking part in the Gumball Rally.
Their Porsche collided with another car, killing the driver Vladimir Chepunjoski and his wife Margarita.
Mr Morley has been charged with dangerous driving and is being held in prison after his bail was revoked.
He is being held in Ohrid Prison in Macedonia, criticised as "overcrowded and cramped" by watchdogs.
This year's Gumball Rally was from London to Istanbul and back.
The incident happened near Struga, close to the Macedonian border, when a Porsche 911 collided with a Volkswagen Golf, on 4 May.
Race abandoned
Mr Morley and Mr McConville are alleged to have left the scene of the accident, although their lawyers say they waited for ambulance crews and reported the crash to police.
Both were then bailed and Mr McConville returned to the UK.
The pair were driving in the Gumball Rally, an annual 3,000-mile Europe-wide tour which attracts the rich and famous.
Hundreds of businessmen, playboys and celebrities pay £28,000 to drive super cars such as Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis.
Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay and the model Caprice took part this year before the race was abandoned following the fatal crash.
Organisers insist it is a tour of cultural sites and drivers have to abide by the laws and road regulations of the country. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

Gumball driver walks away a free man...

A British businessman who caused the death of an elderly couple while racing in the Gumball rally has walked free from a Macedonian court.
Nicholas Morley, 30, from Bowden, Cheshire, was given a two-year suspended sentence after his Porsche 911 collided with Vladimir Chepunjoski, 67, and his wife Margarita's car.
Morley was convicted of "endangering traffic, leading to death" by the court in Struga, Macedonia, after a week-long trial, Manchester-based Pannone and Partners said.
The crash occurred near the Albanian border on May 4. Morley's family have issued a statement through their public relations firm saying they are "delighted and relieved that Nick is on his way home".
The Morley family's statement read: "We are delighted and relieved that Nick is on his way home.
"We have maintained all along that Nick was involved in a tragic accident and entirely innocent of the charges brought against him."
It added: "While we are disappointed that the court has not recognised Nick's innocence, our sole focus today is to get Nick home and reunited with his family."
"In the course of time, we will consider all our options, including an appeal of this decision so we can clear Nick's name."
Morley, the brother of wealthy property developer Oliver Morley whose business is reported to be worth tens of millions of pounds, was held in the notorious Ohrid Prison in Macedonia while he awaited trial.
He spent 23-hours-a-day in his cell at the prison, which has been criticised as overcrowded and cramped by prison watchdogs.
Matthew McConville, from Prestwich, Greater Manchester, was Morley's co-driver during the Europe-wide road race which attracts the rich and famous.
Hundreds of businessmen, playboys and celebrities pay 28,000 to drive supercars such as Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis.
Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay and the model Caprice took part this year before the race was abandoned following the fatal crash.
