Kanye West "Graduation"
Hey guys,
Today the new Kanye West album "Graduation" dropped. Sampling it the first time through, it's up there with his 2nd album "Late registration", but not as good as his first masterpiece "The College Dropout".
Going beyond his 2 radio releases "Stronger (which samples the Daft Punk beat)", and "Can't Tell me Nothing", there are some very good songs on this album. My favorites are "Champion", and "Flashing Lights".
Overall from top to bottom, there isn't a weak song on the 13-song album (his 2 prior albums had close to 20 songs), but there are fewer spectacular songs either. So I definately recommend this album to any hip hop fan, but don't expect the brilliance of "the College Dropout". _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Rap/Hip Hop. I assumed he's famous enough on an international level, or am I mistaken? _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

No, I've heard his name a lot, I just didn't listen anything, and was wondering that. Down here is not so known.

I think this album is horrible! I think his flow, lyrics and delivery just sucks. It is so annoying to me and the first album I could stomach, but that is it. STRONGER is just okay, but that is just it - okay.
His production is really good and he should stick to that. Although his song with Common on Common's album is pretty good - but that is because of the beat.
I wish we had less of him here like you guys do down there Dyego!
I wasn't expecting much, so I don't feel that disappointed...Talib Kweli on the other hand almost made me cry with his boring record.
I'll be playing Common over these 2 for quite some time! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

Deesh,
I will give you credit, you never "sugar coat" your opinions. There is a lot of mainstream hip hop these days that is just god awful, but you're opinion about this is in the minority. The Talib album is good. I've never been a big fan of his, but he's solid. Just remember, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Your response reminds me of that Black Eyed Peas thread. I'm done arguin. But I'm frankly shocked you can bash this album. Critique it yes, "bash it"? No.
2 things to add-
1) Most of what's topping the charts in terms of hip hop these days is garbage, but I must be in the minority because "Soldier Boy", "This is why I'm Hot", and anything that Akon and T-Pain sings a hook to turns to gold. But it's all awful. But I think the Kanye album delivers.
2) This goes for Kanye, Common, or even Jamiroquai- I can be a huge fan of an artist or a group, but if they don't deliver on an album, and it sucks, I'll say so. I won't let my love for a group distort what's good or bad. If they made a bad album, they made a bad album. But I legitimately like Kanye's new album (and Common's as well).
I make those 2 points to show that I'm not jaded in my opinions. If it's good, it's good, if it's bad, it's bad, no matter what factors play into an album.
P.S.- Deesh, I get to see Common in Minneapolis on Fri. I can't wait!!!! _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Pete - Honey, we weren't arguing at all! Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. You started a thread and I answered - not a big deal, I thought You are one of the only people on here I can discuss hip-hop with. We just have different ears and so our likes will be different..not a big deal though
I wasn't bashing your opinion, just the record. Yeah, sorry...just not my thing! Talib's lyrics have went down in my opinion. I have followed him since Lyricist Lounge days and I am just bored with his flow anymore and his voice.
As I get older, I am finding that my frustrations with rap music are increasing. I still love it, but I need something new and fresh, not recycled as I feel Kanye and Kweli have both done with their latest records.
Sucks is pretty extreme to say, but so was the hype for this album and I think the glory for it is a bit overrated, and 'sucks' was my first opinion upon listening. I tried again, but still couldn't stomach it.
I agree about TPain and Akon also.
Have fun at Common. I hope he delivers a good show for you. I will see him right after you on the 25th in Philly!
PS. When it comes to music, politics or something other - you are right - I don't sugarcoat my opinions. But when it comes to people, I am not that rude or insensitive _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

I just noticed this now, but I'm wondering if Common is even having an opening act. The doors don't open until 10. I've seen some shows that won't open their doors until 9, but 10... that's a first. _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

I saw him twice before. Once he was the opening act and another time he had a DJ open.
This current tour is with QTip from Tribe Called Quest, so my guess is that Tip will DJ before Common comes on or in between 2 Common sets.
I don't know if you will get QTip at yours Pete, but I am guessing probably. I know he is listed on the bill for the Philly concert. Text and let me know how it was! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

I hope he's on the bill. I love a Tribe Called Quest, and his solo stuff was ok too. "Vivrant Thing" lol _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Okay, I found two songs that I can tolerate on this release, as in the beats and production are so stellar that I can surpass the rhyming, and they are two songs you mentioned Pete - Champion and Flashing Lights.
I like them both. Nothing else has grown on me yet though.
How was Common and QTip for you? They were great here. Unbelievable how QTip can hold down a Tribe song and there is only one of him
I thought about going to see him in New York this weekend, but I don't really have the money for a repeat Common concert, especially in the city. Anyway....have a good week! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

I like Kanye's new album. It's not his best album but it's cool. Beats are on point, Kanye on the mic is average but he was never the best rapper out there.
About Black eyed peas, people shouldn't be fooled by their last albums. It's an excellent posse, their first albums pre Fergie were really good and pure hip hop. I they went pop, it's because they were unable to get recognized.
Will I am is easily one of the best producer out there. Yes, he sometimes produces garbage, but it's just for the money. When he actually cares about an artist (Sergio Mendes or John Legend) he produces beautiful tracks. |

I agree - Will.I.Am. is a great producer. The Common track, "I Want You" is really dope. _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |
