A Letter I recently Wrote- Spread it around!!
Chivalry: An Idealistic Behavior Lost to the Past?
Written by Kevin M. Perito
Father of 4 children

What has become of the ideology of Chivalry? As kids today become more grown up at earlier ages than before, i.e. the new teenager is now considered to be between 10-14 now compared to 13-17 when I was a kid, it’s safe to say that things are coming around in full circle. Back in the Dark/Middle ages, a 15-17 year old was considered an adult and in most cases was married before they were even in their 20’s. Of course people didn’t live as long either back then considering the average age of death was between 35-50 years old so they tried to live life to the fullest. But what is vastly different today in our kids to those of another time when kids didn’t have much for a childhood before becoming adults is that the children of then had a code to live by. They were brought up on the legends of courageous and honorable Knights. Most strived to be like those of the stories they were told. There was a sense of great pride living by the chivalric code. Unlike today where role models tend to be those only with money and who are self-centered (“I got to get me mine” attitude). Example, any professional athlete who plays in a sport they love is grossly paid money to do what they love to do meanwhile you have fisherman, coalminers, waste management, fire and police officers who risk their very lives to make our lives safer and easier only get paid barely a fraction of what athletes make. Yet the athletes, musicians, and celebrities are the ones who have become role models in today’s society.

Let’s look at the lost code of Chivalry through its 12 virtues:

1. Faith: Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or
thing.

2. Charity: Benevolence or generosity toward others or toward humanity.

3. Justice: The upholding of what is just, especially fair treatment and due reward in
accordance with honor, standards, or law.

4. Sagacity: The quality of being discerning, sound in judgment, and farsighted;
wisdom.

5. Prudence: Caution with regard to practical matters; discretion.

6. Temperance: Moderation or self-restraint in action, statement, etc.; self-control.

7. Resolution: The mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of
purpose.

8. Truth: Fidelity to an original or standard; the state or character of being true.

9. Liberality: The trait of being generous in behavior and temperament.

10. Diligence: Constant and earnest effort to accomplish what is undertaken; persistent
exertion of body or mind.

11. Hope: To look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence.

12. Valor: boldness or determination in facing great danger, esp. in battle; heroic courage; bravery

These 12 virtues were the basis of Chivalry and a knight of the code had to live by and often had to provide evidence of these virtues within their own actions. Now just stop and read them again. Can you bring to mind a time in your life when you accomplished each of these virtues? I bet you can, because most of you have because human nature is not war and violence, its interaction and reception. Can you imagine what our world would be like today if we all were to live by this code, no matter race, creed, or color? It would be the utopia that we all seem to think is out of reach or never possible. It’s too late in our lifetime to make this change but if we teach our children to live by this code then you would find in future generations respect and equality throughout all of humanity. I know most who read this are thinking “yeah maybe in a perfect world…” and that is part of our problem as humanity as a whole, our society today is so filled with cynicism that no one believes anything can be done to fix anything and the scary part is that they are right because we tend to think individually instead of being part of a whole. We are all human and we all have differences. We should be celebrating our diversity instead of fighting over them. We should be lending a helping hand to those who have fallen instead of walking by them in disgust. We as parents and adults should be setting a better example to the next generation growing up rather than pushing our own hang ups and misconceptions onto them. Again read those 12 virtues, they are not bound by religion, wealth, or power. They are simply what a person should strive to achieve not only for themselves but for all those around them.

I know I’m not the only one who thinks this way and by no means is it impossible for the reality of the human race being one of peace and prosperity to come into fruition. You see self sacrifice and unity all the time. Perfect examples would be when the 2005 Tsunami struck or hurricane Katrina, the compassion of people around the world to help those who were so tragically struck outpoured like a flash flood. So the question is why can’t we unite without a crisis? I truly feel (and I could be wrong) that most people do feel like I do and that only the fanatics of the world are heard. I mean why shouldn’t I feel completely comfortable having a conversation with a Muslim from Syria or drink tea with a Muslim from Iran for that matter? I treat people on a personal level rather than group them by religion, race, or color. If an individual is from Iran and they haven’t done anything to me personally and I haven’t done anything to them personally then why shouldn’t we get along? Why shouldn’t we celebrate our differences and learn from one another in doing so…is it simply because fanatics (and this includes governments) simply say they are our enemies and therefore me and this individual cannot become friends and respect one another? That’s what has happened, broken down to its simplest form; we’ve let a few be the voice for the many when it should be the other way around. We’ve let the few voice their own opinions instead of the opinion of the vast majority be heard.

Be honest with yourself when you read and answer these, how many of you honestly think people would rather fight than live in peace together regardless of their religious beliefs? How many of you ever sat down got to know a Muslim before making a remark that they are all crazy and vice versa for Muslims to Christians, or how about even an British to a Syrian or and Iranian to American? Are you scared to find out that your misconceptions of the other are wrong and that the fear of the unknown keeps you steadfast instead of extending your hand in friendship? I would like to think at this very moment that a Palestinian is writing the very same thought that I am having and that it inspires a Syrian teen who is burning the American flag in the streets to learn more about American people (not their government) before they burn the next one. I hope a North Korean is inspired enough to cry out ,“Enough is enough, I want peace”. I hope to inspire an Israeli father build a home for a Palestinian family and feel good about doing so because Peace is the right course of action for all humanity.

It boils down to those willingly follow a code lost through the ages that now only lives in movies and songs will be rewarded with bright futures for our future generations.

There is an ancient Chinese saying that a pebble dropped into the water can create a tidal wave.

I am but a pebble dropped into the water who will add to my ripple?

World peace? Never. As long as there's greed, there's guns. As long as there's guns, there's blood. As long as there's blood, there's no peace. Now, isn't it really odd how the world is always led by self-centered, close-minded, empty-headed war profiteers?

Knjaz, you took the words off my mou... er... fingertips. That's exactly what I was going to say. The world has never been in peace, nor it will ever be... sad but true. Even in the middle ages, without nuclear heads, there were the crusades and everything. I don't know much about history, but I still don't remember anyone mentioning a period of world peace in the ~5000 years of "recorded" history we have.

its way easy, just we need to close the militar and weapons factorys and then we must start to live in a way ecologic and with less over-use of the earth, then we need to live each other and dont give power to a few, all must be responsyble for what we do...yeah, i believe we can have peace, is just a question of time and open our minds Wink

first
-the production knowledge will belong to the people who work
-no more power to some people, everybody must belong to what he know to do
second
-forget all the discrimination we have in the world, no more of that shit, only because some motherfucker says that some people is not welcome dont mean you must think as the motherfucker do, because everybody we are the same, we have the same troubles and always th power try to make us figh each other just to make his power biggest
third
-we must start to spend our knowledge in help another people and create new works instead of make fuss about everything...
-no more wars, no more useless fight Cool
there's so many ways...all are everywhere but we are so damn blind that we can see that...is so easy.

im sure we can do a better world, is not so hard man¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
only we need to have the power us, power to the people first
and i mean real power, no the one we have now Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

and the cruzades were the shit made by the church to convert anyone just because they wanna control everybody and win power...so that was another of the many many many many many many many useless wars, because there's no need to fight each other, we all are the same, we live in the same world, under the same sky...
we need really peace instead of fight againt each other, because we're messing out alot Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil

I think chivalry is dead when it comes to most gov't officials...that is why there needs to be a revolution...and people need to come to a peace resolution...unfortunately, it will probably take a major catastrophic incident for us to all come together as one.

So MackDaddy where did you send your letter besides this forum? I think it's a fine list.
