*stevie wonder concert - philly, nov.8, 2007*
Oh my...WOW!!!
I don't even know what to say or how to say it. This man was absolutely, totally amazing. I mean...WOW!
He played for 3 straight hours. I lost count of how many songs. This was theeeee best concert I have ever been to in my life and paying all that money was so, so worth it.
We got there about 15 minutes early. Seats were pretty good. Not really, really close, but close enough where we could see properly.
Stevie was escorted by his daughter out, who is also his backup singer.
They started out with "Loves In Need of Love Today" and the band came out during that and got behind their instruments and it was non-stop.
WOW.
He is hilarious. After 50 years, he still has the voice, humor and personality of a 25 year old. Performers today need to seriously watch him and study how this man and his band put on a concert...
energetic
entertertaining
mind-blowing
musicianship and instrumentation was top notch
funny
emotional (his mother died a year ago and he explained that was his motivation for going back on tour and doing what he loves and healing through sharing his music)
political (he spoke of the current high rate of murders in our city..said he is disgusted with humanity, but expressed he feels there is hope. he said that in all that he's been through including the civil rights era and it's racism, the current state of the world is the worst. he spoke of upset with bush, the war, the easy access to guns, bad parenting, not taking care of each other, not depending on God. He spoke of my city and what we need to do to fix what is wrong. He applauded the 10,000 black men that have taken to walking and patrolling the streets and helping the youth here in my city. he told us not to give up hope and stick together. I got a bit emotional about it because of my students and how sometimes I don't feel like I am helping them at all...but I don't give up.)
He also spoke of the injustice of the Jena 6.
One thing I adore about Stevie is the fact that he uses his legendary status to continue to help people and causes. He never stopped because he got money and got big...that deserves the upmost respect.
I admit that I saw him on TV a few times in the past years and I've been not so impressed with his voice, but last night sounded so clean and crisp.
He broke out his harmonica during a few songs and switched back and forth between a grand piano and a keyboard.
His band consisted of 2 percussionists, a drummer, 3 background singers, 2 guitarists and 2 keyboard players.
The songs...I am going to forget some, but I'll try to remember as many as I can. I couldn't write anything down. I was just stuck and amazed...
As, Do I Do, Sir Duke, Superstition, Superwoman, Golden Lady, My Cherie Amor (he told us the story behind that..he wrote it after meeting a girl for a few hours..played it for her in the hopes that she would date him...and she didn't), Don't You Worry Bout A Thing (which is my favorite song in the world...so I went crazy), Jammin' Until the Break of Dawn, Too High, Higher Ground, Signed Sealed Delivered, Until You Come Back To Me, Hey Love, If You Really Love Me, You and I, You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, Overjoyed (beautiful), All I Do, Uptight, I Was Made To Love Her, I Wish, For Once In My Life, Living For City, Ribbon In The Sky (he did an audience participation thing with this one)...that is all I remember
WOW. He did a medley of a 4 or so of them, just playing the chorus and a verse. We are all singing, dancing, clapping and laughing all night.
At the end of the night he started singing the chorus to Rehab!! He sang, "They said I have to stop playing now" and I said, "No, No, No"..referring to his ending the concert.
I encourage everyone to go see Stevie if he comes near you. He said that he may be doing a world tour, but he mentioned it very briefly.
This was the highlight of my concert experiences ever...I would pay the money all over again to see him and will again if he comes back or even near me.
A legend was right in front of me and he is that, but he is very humble and it is great to see him still enjoying himself.
I didn't get good pictures or video, so I have nothing fun to share really
This man is phenomenal. I don't even know how I'm going to put together a proper review for the paper! But I will try and post the link here.
I know there are a lot of words here, but truthfully nothing can describe last night.
Gotta get to work, but Thank you Stevie! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

YES! I hope he does too Simon. Not to be missed. I can't believe I finally saw Stevie..finally!
You just reminded me that I didn't list he had a bass player, but he did. I think it was a guy who has been with Stevie for nearly the entire time.
And...there was NO HORN section, and it was still amazing
See, horns aren't always needed to make a show phenomenal _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

What a review!!
I ssoooo want to see Stevie performing live before I die! (or before he dies )
I wish he could come down here, although that's nearly impossible.
D!
PS: 2 days ago Earth Wind & Fire performed down here, I couldn't be there! |

Great review deesh, you gave me appetite to see one of Stevie's gigs if he comes over to Europe.
In one point your review remembered me a concert I saw in the 90s, the one of Santana in the ice-skating hall of Remich/Luxembourg. He also played for about 3 hours and this was until now the best concert I attented. _________________

Yes, Simon - that was him! Everyone stood up and gave him mad respect.
Dyego - you never know.
AP - Tickets for me were $100 US, which is about 50 or so Pounds and like 70 or something Euros (my calculations are off I'm sure, but close)...
I had to sacrifice a bit, but so worth it _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

$100... really... thats good, because you know some people roll through here and its over $400 (unless you knew someone who was able to get the ticket for the real price and not the scalped price) Its a conspiracy! And yeah, I know all about the pound being double plus the dollar, got relatives over there who love to let me know! My grandmother asked me if I knew what guy faulks day was, and I said "is that like Halloween?" to get her goat- you should of heard her reaction $100 though that is still an amount of money for me! |
