Van Gelder compared to Mckenzie.
Hi guys. I was wondering, which style of drumming for jamiroquai do you prefer, and why? I am a drummer myself, and I think both Nick and Derrick are great drummers. I find it sad that Nick only played on one album (and the kids, and maybe space clav?), and it sounds like he was made to leave the band. I think when Nick left the band some of those old vibes were lost. JK described Nick's drumming as "just filling space on the album". I think Jay went too far when he said that. I would love to hear some of your thoughts on this topic. Cheers. _________________ Bass to jazz.... j-j-j-jazz to bass... |

I seriously prefer Derrick's playing. Nick got better thanks to the live concerts, but his playing was not extraordinary on the first album. He's really groovy though, and I prefered his style on blow your mind. He was also really good on the studio version of music of the mind |

Yeah i agree with you there. I think Nick probably didn't quite have quite the same energy as Derrick does in the live concerts, but MOTM shows some pretty good talent. BYM with Nick is nice and laid back as well. _________________ Bass to jazz.... j-j-j-jazz to bass... |

Exactly I prefer the smooth, laid back version of blow your mind. |

Derrick McKenzie! no doubt about it!!
Nick is more acid jazz oriented... Derrick is power and Funk!! just see the difference of them playing "The Kids"! (the UgoUgoRuga version of The Kids is just wonderful) _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Nick's playing was actually pretty tight on the Kids live version, especially the one from the Citta club. However I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't have been to hold it down like Derrick did on the other albums. His playing on Mr moon, just another story, we getting down, the whole percussion solo with Sola etc... |

I think that Derrick has such finess on the ROTSC album, that wouldn't have suited Nick. I think that while the others were beginning to write the ROTSC songs, they realised Nick wouldn't fit. But Nick has a nice laid back groove on EOPE. Do that dance with Mckenzie would be really interesting. Pity they scrapped it. Thanks for your thoughts guys. If there are any other drummers with thoughts on this please share them . _________________ Bass to jazz.... j-j-j-jazz to bass... |
