Amp Fiddler - Afro Strut
I was a casual fan of Amp Fiddler until I got his new release, "Afro Strut" yesterday...WOW! Besides the lyrics, the music and instrumentation is so catchy and the chemistry of it comes together. My favorite tracks are FAITH and IF I DON'T (featuring Corinne Bailey Rae) and HEAVEN (featuring Raphael Saadiq on production, Stephanie McKay on vocals) Anyone that is into soul and dance, I suggest checking this out. You just might dig it as much as I do! This is the first release in awhile that I am amazed by.

Listen to all three songs I mentioned above here: http://www.giantstep.net/releases/1654/

More on Amp: Amp Fiddler follows up the 100,000+ worldwide selling, Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly with the US edition of Afro Strut, an album set to be one of the best of 2007. Amp's lifetime of influences and experiences, drawn from his work with the likes of Prince, George Clinton (with whom he toured for more than 10 years), Maxwell, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Primal Scream, Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, Lucy Pearl, Carl Craig, Only Child and Moodyman result in a unique blend of funk, soul, electronica and dance.

I have the "Waltz" album. It's pretty good, so I think I'll check this one out in a while, too.

I need to hear some of his stuff... he was playing a free open-air gig as part of Festes de la Mercé when I was in Barcelona in September, but it was on the Saturday night at the same time as the Barcelona - Sevilla football game (which I'd already got tickets for about 3 weeks in advance) so I had to miss it.

Something to remember for the next time I'm feeling bored and looking round Amazon late at night...

I prefer Whaltz Of A Ghetto Fly from him, definetly a unique artist with a unique sound. He's been with Parliament Funkadelic before and have been playing at the ROTSC tour as a session keyboardist (you can hear Jay introducing Amp on the NSJF bootleg in 1995, disc 2 of Funky Paradise).

Just incase anyone is interested Cool

Amp Fiddler
Afro Strut
Released: Sept.2007
More info including where to buy: http://www.giantstep.net/releases/1654

By: Deesha Dyer for Giant Step and GeoClan

The latest slice of music by the multi-talented Amp Fiddler contains a healthy dose of funk, soul and dance. Aptly titled, Afro Strut, Fiddler mixes up styles, tempos and vibes to provide an overly satisfying listening experience.

The groove starts with opening track, 'Faith', and it never lets up. The song’s serious bass line lays the undertone for a solid offering. Saadiq’s contribution is definitely heard. The vibe then transitions when Fiddler teams up with breakout star Corinne Bailey Rae on up-tempo vintage track, 'If I Don’t.' The sections where they are singing in unison, like the second part of the chorus give the song an innocent and school crush feel. Some other standouts worth mentioning are 'Right Where You Are' (the beat that comes in around the 35 second mark fits perfectly), 'Ridin', which has both house and disco elements, and 'Come See Me', a track that has Fiddler showing off his falsetto over a laid-back beat - very slick and smooth.

Before getting to my favorite track, I gotta give props for the Jimi Hendrix cover of 'Hey Joe'. This is a dangerous move, afterall…it is Hendrix. Fiddler embodies the original with the vocals and even the rock sound. There are a bit of new millennium generated sounds thrown in, but they aren’t that bothersome truthfully.

I mentioned that I had a favorite and that would be, 'Heaven', featuring soulstress Stephanie McKay. The way the song opens gives me chills…it is haunting and uplifting. McKay and Fiddler make a beautiful combination. The song is soft and speaks of finding solace in tough times – something everyone can definitely relate to.

Afro Strut was released at the right time. Fiddler’s experience and talent with various instruments and with different bands show through the crisp clean sound and production. There are parts within songs where I am just surprised and touch by the adlibs, a hit of a key or stroke of a guitar.

The CD just feels good and I actually play it the entire way through. Can’t think of when the last time I said that about a male funk or soul release.

Laughing Laughing Laughing I just discovered this Deesh! I really like his sound. Thanks for the post.

I heard 3 tracks that are streamed on download.com

So he toured with JMQ as a session player, in the band? or is own?

Having studied jazz in school and with Harold McKinney while growing up in Detroit, Joseph Amp Fiddler began his career in popular music when he went on tour with the group Enchantment. Later, in the mid 80's, after joining George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic, he toured worldwide with the group and extensively worked as keyboard player and co-producer in studio recordings. He also performed with Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Prince, Seal and Maxwell. Amp produced his own album, Mr. Fiddler "With Respect" on Elektra in 1990.
More recently, he has released various singles for UK Genuine label and has been working with Carl Craig and Planet-e's various projects (Detroit Experiment, Moodymann, John Arnold, Recloose ...).
The release of the debut album, 'Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly' (2004) received crictical acclaim; "Trust me people, this is essential listening" - HHC, Detroit. He has supported this with brilliant shows with his live band at gigs and festivals. And he seems to be a really nice and modest bloke too; nice quote "Conversation and not segregation needs to be the focus for people to have an understanding of each other and look at situations unconditionally". Right On!

Saw the show last night. He's a great performer. Not that many people were there, but I blame that on ticket prices and the fact that it was Easter. Full review coming soon, but for now..here are pictures:

free mp3 download is in this link..

http://www.giantstep.net/news/794

Amp Fiddler has recorded a post-tour podcast as he reflects on some of the best moments on stage in March. You can hear it exclusively through his website - click the link below for a free download too.

If you haven't heard Amp's previous podcasts, which includes plays of some previously unreleased material as well as him giving his tip for the US presidential elections, you can still download that for free through iTunes
