Miss Belgium 2008 - Speaks no Flemish
Saturday evening they elected the new Miss Belgium. Her name is Alizée Poulicek. The newspapers describe her as 50% French, 50% Chech, 0% Flemish.
In the election, when she was interviewed by a former Miss Belgium (Ann Van Elsen) in Dutch, she couldn't answer in Flemish and the public went mad. Especially because the other 4 finalists were perfectly bi-lengual.

As the first language in Belgium is Flemish (or Dutch) and she will have to perform in a lot of television shows, this has opened discussion. Especially with the whole political situation in my little country !! It has been since 2003 that there was no french speaking miss elected. In Belgium, a lot of ex-misses work in the media now.

Let me know what you think. Should a Miss just be beautiful and not open her mounth ?

In my opinion every Belgian should be able to speak French and Dutch (and even German if possible). There you see that there's something wrong in the Belgian school system.
And don't tell this ain't possible, I learned 4 languages in school, which is quite common in Luxembourg.

I know !!! In the Flemish part you start with French lessons at the age of 10 years. And you know, if you go to the French part of Belgium, and you don't speak French, well, you're lost !!! But from the otherside... they don't speak Dutch. It was always like this.
I have nothing against 'Walen' but why don't they learn Dutch ? It is better for them carreerwise.

It's just the same with most of the Walloons working here in Luxembourg. Learning foreign languages is something they don't like (or can't do, who knows?), just like their French cousins.
