17 AUGUST 2008 - DERRICK/PAUL/ROB MASTERCLASS
On Sunday 17 August at The Residence in Great Yarmouth (UK), Jamiroquai musicians Derrick McKenzie (drums), Paul Turner (bass) and Rob Harris (guitar) will be holding a "masterclass" event.

"Hear them perform famous Jamiroquai tracks, and reveal the secrets of how they work as a unit - a masterclass music event."

The event starts at 4pm and tickets can be purchased from vendors as shown on the promotional poster for the event. The event is being organised by Elusive Events Management who can be found at http://www.myspace.com/elusiveeventsmanagement.

I went along, and yeah, they was knackered! It was fantastic though, an intimate setting and they sounded great.

Setlist :

Joyous: a great cover of The Pleasure tune, this was so great to start the show!

Light Years: 2 different version: the regular one, and more funky & aggressive version (the version they played at the ACM Masterclass).

Space Cowboy: The played this song, explaining that every night the do a different version that can be 3’30 or 8’… And they did all the different Space Cowboy breaks (the one from 1995, to 2005…). Rob explained that sometimes, Jay say on stage “let’s do the 1997 for the first break, then the 2003 for the second break, etc.”. They explained which kind of pedals they’re using on tour. They spoke about the Jazz Café gig, and the fact that they prefer smaller venues.

Love Fool: The best version I’ve ever heard! The did a great bass break, then the “Dynamite Tour” break, and after that, they mixed it with Chic’s Good Times (back to the old school!!) and finaly they did Main Vein. Amazing version! Rob was sooo funky. He played a funky solo he never uses to do! He explained that he’s not a rock guitarist and that he play exactly what Jay wants him to play. So the rocky sound of Jamiroquai during the last years is not his fault! After that they spoke about the recording of the new album. Rob said: “For the last album, it was mainly Jay, Matt & me that did the writing part. Now we’re all in a room together playing & throwing ideas which means we’re getting less in the machines. It sounds very different”. Derrick: “Next gigs will be bigger productions…”. They spoke about solos, Rob explained that one of the first time they played Bad Girls for the AFO, J pointed at him and Rob thought he was due to make a solo, which he did… But all the band had stopped playing… He said “should I stop, should I carry on ? If I stop, I’ll be the idiot that didn’t stop, so I keep on playing, the band started playing again, and Jay thought it was great and they kept this part! Paul did the same kind of mistake during “Travelling Without Moving”.

Travelling Without Moving: Great version too, mixed with a Sly & The Family Stone tune (don’t remember which one), and Parliament’s Give up The Funk. Great solo by Paul. They spoke about their influences, when did they start, in which band they played, etc.

Deeper Underground: Classic version…

Left and Right/Crazy: D’Angelo cover mixed with Gnarls Barkley hit! Great slow lazy tune! So funky! Smile They spoke about how improve your playing… Rob played part of Chic’s “Thinking Of You”.

Too Young To Die: Oh yeah baby! Smile

If I Like It I Do It: with the TWM funky break! Great!

I spoke with Paul & Derrick, and here’s what they said more or less:
- They want brass! “Jay promised us that we’ll never do a gig without horns”. There will be brass on the next album, chords too. And MAYBE chords for the next tour… Paul even said it’s a pity to play The Kids or Mr. Moon without horns/
- The entire track they’ve recorded till now are at least 8 min. long!
- They was supposed to play a new tune at the Rock In Rio gig… But they didn’t!
- Derrick explained he couldn’t play with Nude Continuum at Ahaus due to plane problems…

We spoke about other things, I'll try to remember !
They were all three really nice… What a great afternoon!
