bloody pc, I typed out a huge reply and it crashed lol
Any way yes all valid points and I must say I agree with the sentiment in there.
But
The music industry has changed, the middle aged people like me very rarely buy singles and to attend a concert nowadays is expensive and hard work if you have a young family so many will not.
Any a&r man will tell you that if you target the 12 - 17 year olds you will have a very successful music career.
With regards to Blue Skies
"This song is Jamiroquai coming of age" Think of it as a movie, in the beginning there was the young upstart, then the settled down but still a rebel stage, followed by the mad at the world stage, before the darkness and vengeful period. Now we have our Swan our fully mature and fully expierenced Jamiroquai"
Blue skies is a beautiful song - isnt it |

Well, we have heard 3 singles, not just that one. And RDLS and WKR are different from Blue Skies (BS) (haha I like the abbreviations!).
And the optimist in me says that there are also 9 other songs not heard.
But the first 3 are pretty good for me.
Have no expectations. Wait for the album release.
Like it if you want, don't like it if you don't.
Blue Skies is different. Kind of a vulnerable song. But strong vocal ability. And the arrangement probably categorized as "pop".
Sounds like too many people are having anxiety over whether it is good enough!
Looking back at their catalog, they fit many different genres of music. Their early stuff kinda jazzy/funky/groovy. Then they moved to a faster paced drum driven beat with TWM. But what genre did Canned Heat fit from Synkronized? AFO kinda electro/disco songs. And Dynamite -smooth groove like the title track was great, and then BDC kinda Rocky. But all so different.
WKR funky smooth fits into their trademark sound, same as RDLS. And Blue Skies, adds a little more variety to their ever-expansive genre! So if it's not your favorite ever, move on. But this is Jamiroquai's new music.

I have a friend who didn't know anything about Jamiroquai... After a few brief ''lessons'', he's become a J fanatic and has even gone to shows with me.
One thing he always says is how effortlessly Jay seems to sing... Many other artists look as if they're struggling with the microphone. Definitely not Jay. BS shows this easily.
I always value his opinions because he's a non-fan-who-became-a-fan. I feel he's more partial than I could possibly be, having been a fan right from the very start.
I showed him WKR and he said it was very good... It took me quite a few good listens to enjoy the song, but he liked it straight away. I haven't shown him BS yet, but I will.
BS doesn't sound like a traditional J track, but it doesn't mean it's a terrible song. The more you listen to it, the more you tend to like it. But I have to agree with whoever said that it's complicated when you have to listen to a song a million times to finally like it.
You just can't afford to do this in our modern, information-filled world nowadays. If a song doesn't grab the radio/tv listener straight away, chances are the person won't give the track a second try. I surely don't. Put any Beyoncé/Rihanna/Gaga song on the air and I switch the dial in 30 seconds if I don't like the song fast (I usually don't. I really dislike these ''singers'').
My only concern is that BS is a grower, not a song that you appreciate as soon as you hear it (like SDISJ). It'd work better if included in a movie, so you could combine the scene, the acting and the song. On its own, just played on the radio, I don't think the track will sound that impressive.
People in the UK always accuse J of coming up with the same song over and over again. J are always associated with disco-oriented tracks and maybe the record company is trying to change people's perceptions of the band. I don't know how marketing goes in the music industry. But I don't think it'll rock the charts. Unfortunately.

This is interesting, because I have a friend just like this who yesterday I showed Montreux 1995 (they're not all that familiar with the early stuff). His first comment was how effortlessly Jay was singing, compared to how forced his voice sounded today, even when I showed him the latest "improved voice" stuff at Paleo...
I'm with you on valuing your friends opinions who aren't such mega fans though - it's good to get some non-biased views every so often.
Actually, his first comment (about Paleo) was "geez, he's looking old these days, isn't he?" lol _________________

So funny! You guys are all so critical.
Perfection and beauty are so overrated in our society!
He's a man. He's 40. He's partied. He's gonna show some age.
I can't wait for people to hear the new JMQ music and see what they say. We haven't heard any new JMQ music here in 14 years!
And I do love Beyoncé, Rihanna, Gaga (which I'll separate into different people rather than one category!) |

I take it that you are from the Midwest US. Yes we haven't heard any new stuff in years but it was not 14 years. I remember hearing SDISJ, it was in a movie, didn't know the artist. And FJLIS was in a mobile phone commercial (ALTEL) still didn't know the artist. The bad thing is that you are big as your last big hit (TWM) other than that you are forgotten about hence the "one hit-wonder" status . Because im sick of watching VH1 and other shows here saying that "JMQ been very quiet over the years" or What happened to Jay Kay? Are they still a band?" etc. Hopefully RDLS will rejuvenate these guys. _________________

i´m not a regular poster. I was, but its been a long time since I started to move away from the jamily. (I strongly dislaked the last album, but meh..)
5 minutes ago I listened to the new song and i had to come here to post this:
THIS IS THE MOST AWEFULL SONG THEY´VE EVER DONE. I´ve been a massive hardcore fan since TWM, but this is it. I´m done with them.
Its no longer jamiroquai, this is Jay kay and some musiccians playing with him.
And this monster is going to be a single? lol if he gets lucky we may see them playing in mtv featuring Justin Beiber.
i wouldn´t even listen to this track anymore in my lifetime if it wasn´t a jami song.

Yes,I´m a old-school lover, hearing the early JMQ was a mind blowing experience. This cocktail from different music styles, instruments, lyrics and J´s voice was like a drug.....and eachtime my soul begang to float and my feets to dance and "I´m breaking out,I´m flying higher than pig in space".
With Dynamite this magic began to fade, I´m miss the feeling until today and I hope I`ll get better to hear than BS,WKR or RDLS on the new album.
So far I am very disappointed. _________________ I´m breaking out,I´m flying higher than a pig in space |

I picked the "I love it!" option, but in all honesty I'd sit somewhere between the "I love it!" and "Nice one" choices. |

I love it
This song comes as a surprise to me and really wasn't expecting anything like this. I am truly very positively surprised about this one. What can I say ... I love tunes with a soulful layer and BS has this californian soul ring to it ... love the strings and backings _________________

I guess the issue many people have with that song (well, at least that's the BIG issue for me) is that it's been chosen as the lead single for the album!
A lead single is meant to bring the name of the band back on the people's minds and "prepare the field" for the album to sell like cupcakes...
EOPE had "Too Young To Die" and "When You Gonna Learn"
ROTSC had "Space Cowboy"
TWM had "Virtual Insanity"
Synk had "Canned Heat"
AFO had "Little L"
(hmmm... I forgot about Dynamite ! )
Whether you like the tune or not, "Blue Skies" does definitely NOT have the strength of a lead single, that's the problem!
"Half the Man", "King For a Day" or "Corner of the Earth" all made decent singles, but they're definitely NOT tracks you'd put on the front line to make people notice that "Jamiroquai are back and it's gonna be a blast!"
Jamiroquai / Universal obviously got that and that's why they also try to have White Knuckle Ride on the air as well... But it gets all messy : Blue Skies is supposed to be the single, but you hear WKR and they play RDLS in British TV... That marketing plan sure is dodgy! |
